The Junior Debs is an organization of girls which is a branch of the Junior Woman's Club. Girls from the 10th to 12th grades who maintain a good scholastic average are eligible for this club. The purpose of the Junior Debs is to train girls for future community work and to become club leaders. The club had two civic projects as well as three school projects this year. Our civic projects were labeling exotic trees in Key West with painted signs and aiding the March of Dimes campaign. Our school projects were putting on an assembly for the students, giving a party for the baseball, basket- OFFICERS ball, and track teams, and polishing the trophies in the trophy case. T, CASTERTON Doc The Key West High School Band, under the capable direction of Harold T. Casterton, has shown itself to be one ofthe outstanding high school bands in Florida. Only the full cooperation of all the members, the director, Mr. Thomas Stevens, drill master, the school faculty, the band boosters, and many other interested folks, could produce the required result to meet our extensive concert, fO0Iba1l. and drill performances. The band directs every possible effort toward entertainment for school and community events where the music is a requirement. The Drum Majors, Majorettes Letter Girls, and Flag Twirlers are often a feature at special occasions. I The band enjoyed a three day trip to the Orange Bowl celebration for which they received a certificate of excellence. Band members are proud of their new West Point style uniforms. Our motto is to strive always to be worthy of those who so generously provide our fine equipment. Our band quarters are always open to those interested. Mc Neely One can find anything from a secretary to a salesman in the Diversified Cooperative Training. Learning by doing is the keynote of this part-time program. The student spends one-half day in school studying two major subjects and the technicalinformation related to the job for which he is studying. In the afternoon he works on his job in a local shop or business establishment. Here he learns hisjob under actualworking conditions. This job experience is gained under the instruction of a qualified trainer in the occupation the student is learning. This cooperative training carries full credit toward high school graduation and is ac- cepted as a part of the require- ments for college entrance. Juanita Tiffany. This group, under the super- vision of their coordinator, Mr. J. McNee1y, sponsored and directed a successful Career Day program. On this day the businessmen of the city cooperated in explain- ing their professions to the students. On February 16, they traveled to Miami to par- ticipate in the D.C.T. District Convention. While there, they presented a skit entitled, The Trial of Sadie Magee , which illustrated the five areas of selling. Martin Curry The crew ' Buttercup Josephine i ..S- h.. and more of the crew C0 UH IIAY 'NM s For many weeks the date of Conch Day was kept a well guarded secret. On April Z7 at 7 145 the Seniors' annual skip day was begun with a motorcade to Bahia Hunda, stopping only long enough at the school for tridi- tional raising of the Conch Flag and singing of the Alma Mater. One of the highlights of the day was the burying of some of the students and spon- sors. Many of the students en- joyed seeing some of their favorite teachers entombed in the sand. The food truck arrived about noon and after grace had been said by the class presi- dent, Richard Kerr, the hungry crew was served. The food committee had prepared a meal of fried chicken with all the trimmings. It was a stuffed, sun- burned, tired but happy class that headed back toward Key West that afternoon. Evening brought the most peaceful Conch Night in the history of Key West High School.
