We spend And curving roads, the Elm Path, lavender with sudden twilight Down this path, shielded by spreading elmg, We Walked In double file, with flowers reddening the frocks of white We wore. The day was May Day, when we became Sophomores. The class, to graduate in 1950, traced one year At Keuka College, Alma Mater. Slowly walking down the Path we remembered New Student Week Spreads our Big Sisters gave, many faces to record in mental notebooks And lecture notes included in pads of green and gold. The Happy Holidays we were, and rubber bands We snapped to magic words: just call me Stretchf' Straw and girls were scattered past the footlights In the stunt we worked long and hard on in the aud., Same place where legislative power rang from throats Cf knitting Keuka girls who signified their Aye Here, too, we learned about the Sampson dances That were to occupy our Saturdays, and we sat still Only long enough to hear about the signing out. We buckled our jeans, donned Frosh hats, And were informally clad until bus-time. Then we learned about those dances the hard way. The first Field Period, snowtime, then back to Keuka. After February and the Junior Weekend that lacked The important elements ice and snow, Class-es mattered again: Hegeman shimmered with buzzing lights From the first to the fourth floor. We knew our class better, why we were together For the pain of exams in an echoing gym, And ridin from church we harmonized Tell Me Why g . Another May Day came, and we sang Land of Hope and Glory As many times as we had the year before. Down the Elm Path we fluttered, a ribbon of white. We traced a second year at Keuka College, Alma MMCY- We had been Pow Wowed, and waked the morning With our shrieks: Got that token! When the winter silvered the Elm Path with SHOW From end to end, and lapped the lake with its icy tongue We dreamed of spring. We didn't i To go too quickly, but we looked forward to the next year. And for the third time we watched the May Queen Walk The lengthy Elm Path in her filmy dress and magic crown. Behind her, the lake, a long ribbon curling across the front Of the campus, broke the hills. want our second year Black folds of gowns and academic caps, our garments, This May Day. Moved up another rank, we stood and listened to the organ, And then we filed outside and looked around through tear- dimmed eyes About the campus. i Another year was gone, flashing its last in sunlight That clattered on gay maroon jackets and onyx rings. The Jaunty Juniors were serious: Their reminiscent smiles were memories of Pow Wow, Songs hummed from dining-room to Long House, A stunt that was a Slow Boat to China, The strains of Blue Moon drifting through a Hegeman Enveloped in a magical Fantasy in Blue. A May Day that echoed in photograph stillness woke in the morning Rolled up the Elm Path and greenly decked campus, And wrapped all in quietness. This time, when We looked back, we saw our Senior year Mirrored in the blue lake water with the sky. This image danced and swayed, the colors blended in together They were our four years, spun and whirled to one great ball Of blue, and mirrored in Lake Keuka. We saw it all, the friendliness and friendships, The loyalty and love of Keuka years, Combined in the quiet of the May Day, In one shining mirror. And now, as the clouds stream in soft fans over the sky, The lavender light colors the lake and the 1lrCCS That hang like lace above the Elm Path.
