Then before We knew, Keuka Without a herald or a cause We can determine, came to be our lives. And We have found in our search all that we touched and all that touched us have fused to this certitude. The joys and sorrows of college life have given us the Keuka Way of upright thinking and full living which is as equally important as the other more ap- parent values. The years flowed by like Water and now it is time to leave. But before We leave, the class of '48 would like to present to you the elements of beauty, loyalty and tradition We shall remembr as Keuka. 5 The autumn painted landscape. . .the snow trimmed elm path ot Winter. . .the blue lake on a lune day. . .these We remember. The choir at chapel. . .chimes calling us to pause and retlect. . . here is beauty to the ear as Well as the eye. Through our tour years at Keuka each day has brought something added. . .some- thing to make us appreciate the beauty ot our campus and Way of lite. Yes, these have been years ot beauty. They are our college heritage, and each one brings to mind a glimpse of the past tour years. Will you ever forget the day We Wore our frosh caps? . . . the stunts . . . precedence . . . white tassels and senior roloes. . .all these make up a Keuka Kaleidoscope ot Work and fun. Take these traditions and carry them on, tor each one has come to symbolize some phase ot Keuka lite. Yes, We learned the Words, but grasping the meaning behind them has been a process continued throughout our tour years here. Loyalty sing the Words. . .loyalty to Keuka in remembrance ot the Wonderful days We've shared here. . .Loyalty to our classmates. . .to con- tinue the friendships We've formed here. . .and, most of all, Loy- alty to ourselves. . .to be that type ot individual who symbolizes Keuka's thoughts and ideals. We are concerned primarily with what you may become after graduation, the kind of home-maker you are, the kind of citizen you are, the kind of worker you are, the kind of real gram shape up to this end. lt is all f person you are. All our efforts, and our Whole pro- or you. lt is all for the education of women. Each graduating Senior becomes an alumna that represents Keuka. Except to Keukonians this issue will seem like many others. But tor you it has its own distinction, its particular flavor as it recalls your class mates, your Arion, your clubs, your government, your class prophecy. To all these you have given your class per- sonality. As you leave us, the imprint of that personality will continue in its effects on many activities. l hope you will enjoy remembering that one ot your special contributions to Keuka was the education of a new dean-an education that only seniors, Well-versed in the ways ot Keuka, could give. Lowrence. . .populoui 72 X48 Footprints Now we're seniors, now we're freshmen, now we're sen . . . alumnae-aft-er sixteen years, four of the most unforgetable at Keuka. ln September '44 when the men were driv- ' ing tanks and releasing bombs, we settled down to become acclimated to Keuka, took in- duction t-ests and looked forward to mass dates three times a year. That year we were frisky freshmen, students of Expressive Movement and runners-up in the crew race. The tribe of '48 in clan costume built its Tuscarora totem pole on the front lawn. Pork-pie hats signified we had learned the precedence code - under the old regime. Then and there we decided to have big families, Mrs. Merson convinced us it was the duty of every Keuka girl. Katie was our Queen of l-learts, we knew we .held a trump hand. That spring, too, we ate pink marshmallow cookies with our Big Sisters at the Wagner and wove the oak chain with stained hands. We spent Sophomore year wondering where Token Number Ten had disappeared. The men still weren't Back Home Por Keeps, no Soph l-lop for us. Mr. Bagg was in the minority that year. We jotted down for future reference Dr. Gorham's favorite chili sauce recipe, but forgot to coll-ect the sodas he offered for increased speed in his version of the numerical system. We were part of the place by this time and looked forward to private bathtubs in Richardson. Sampson College opened in the fall of '46, our blind dates now wore sport jackets in place of jumpers and pea-jackets. Mr. lackson came to teach Economics, consequently some of us went out of circulation for awhile and became expert students of the subject. The jivy juniors led sophomores through the grape vines to Knapps and became so in- trigued with the spot that a Retreat soon followed. We sprinkled stardust on snowflakes, decorated Richardson lounge with skiis and sleigh-bells and transformed Keuka into a Winter 'Wonderland Billie was chosen Queen by the entire student body. Qur rings came and our forest-green jackets and drab-green caps. Representatives were pledged toisocieties and Ann l-leadley became Co-op Government President. ln recognition of ex- cellence in all sports the big cup came our way. Dr. Allen left in the spring and Dr. Blyley became Acting President. Seeing her in the President's chair did our hearts proud and we immediately felt confident that Keuka was going places. Anne Preston became Anne Schneider, the first in our class to take the step. , Senior year we welcomed back R.N.s Curtin, Davis and Welchins and lost Batesie, B. lo, Anne, Siebie and Betsy. We held majority seats in American Lit class where we prophe- sied the mellowing of Mr. Wallis. Mr. Plaisted was still the man of distinction as far as we were concerned. We began governing ourselves, only to admit that we could no longer burn the midnight oil socially or scholastically. After Easter vacation, every action seemed to be tagged the last one of its kind. The year seemed to be made up of Weeks of one kind or another. Applications for employment and interviews interrupted the calmness of life on campus. We elected our May Queen as a symbol of everything we stood for as a class. Step sings witnessed our sentimental thoughts as we regretfully made up our minds that we must say goodbye to Keuka and take up post-college lives of great expec- tations. 73 Class ot l949 I is for the junk . . .
