Nursing, as a science, focuses on both the well being of both patient and family and on the technical skills of the nurse practitioner. Nursing in- volves not simply medical skills, but also decision making, evaluating, supporting, understanding, and most of all, caring and just being there. In a field that has increasing knowledge, improved concepts and proce- dures that are making those once learned obsolete, it is essential for the nurse to be flexible and constantly acquiring new knowledge. Florence Nightingale stated that nursing is to ‘‘put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon.”’

In September of 1973, Kettering College of Medical Arts opened its doors to one of the fastest growing allied health professions around — Physician Assistants. The Physician’s Assistant is skilled, trained qualified under the super- vision of a physician and is capable of practicing in a variety of locations all over the country. AMA approved, Physician Assistants emphasize a combination of both basic science and intensive patient contact in forming the care of, not only the person as a patient, but the patient as a person.
