N Q . 4' f 53 f 7 .YNNL Faye Hurst 4-H 1,2 Glee Club Library 5 Annes McK1nzie 4 H l Glee Club ll Library Arlene Allen Laura James Q Glee Club Jane Lackev Loretta Gamble ulee Club l Junior pls '91 4-H 1,2 4-11 1,2 5,4 , Y 4-H 1,2 152' , .,' ,,:Wx lm QL assi wee C 00000 it A VOYAFL TUROIGH S NIOR ISLAND In September of 1948, a large group of boys and girls, totalling 54, met at the Welch High School to take their first lap on the Welch High School Cruiser We chose as our Captain, Mrs Mitchell The most outstanding mem bers were President, Colleen Swango Vice Presid nt, Mary Sue Durham Sect and Treas , Wannah Lee Warden Reporters, Franklin Jinks and Loretta Gamble and King and Queen, Colleen Swango and Wayne Chenoweth At the end of this year of our voyage we had a crew of 41 Twelve had left us because of sea sickness or the voyage was too long They were Charlene Calvert, Opal Foster, Betty Fueston, Jane Horn, Arnetta Russell, Jerry Brown Stella Shields, Emma Windle, Virginia Thomas, Freddean Sieland, James Bishop and Virgil Windle Maxine Armstrong, Vice President, Phyllis Carol Brady, Sect and Treasurer, Janet Blackburn, Reporters, Cherry Fox and Buddy Swango Our Captain for this year was Mrs Keithley Our King and Queen were Maxine Armstrong and Joe Woodall At the end of this year's voyage, we nad a crew of 40 We lost one member, Tommy Jennings, who found the voyage too rough and got off at the Dort when we stopped at the end of the year The third year we again chose new officers Our Captain was Miss Faris Kirk our President was Cherie Duvall Vice President, Vonnie Parks Sect and Treas , harv Sue Durham Reporters, J R McCo d and Wanda Newman Our King and Queen were Franklin Jlnks and Wannah Lee Warden At the end of this year we had a crew of 42 One new student had joined our voyage she was Jane Lackey the beginning of the fourth year, we were very much surprised when we counted the crew to find that one had quit to commit matrimony She was Dorothy Griffith Two had found the voyage too rough, they were John West and Joe Woodall We then had a crew of 56 We chose for our Captain this year Mrs Wheatley Our officers were President, Buddy Swango, Vice Presi dent, Wayne Chenoweth, Sect and Treas , Colleen Swango, Reporters Joann Fields and Cherie Duvall, our King and Queen were Phyllis Carol Brady and Bob McAffrey We lost two of our crew because of matrlmony They were Nancy Jo Brown and Jane Lackey One member, Peggy James, joined another ship Wayman Jones had joined our ship to complete the voyage At last our destination was in sight It was a long journey and a hard pgs The 54 that made it should be very proud of the award, it was well worth The ones that made it were: Maxine Armstrong, Arlene Allen, Janet Marie Blackburn, Phyllis Brady, Mary Sue Durham, Mary Emert, Joann Fields, Cherry Fox, Loretta Gamble, Doretha Griffith, Janie V. U . .. , , . 51339 XPHECY HU - '5n'a'brlght'sunny day in early spring in the year of l952,just a few weeks before we graduated from Welch High School we w re once again stroll ing the streets of Welch, when there seemed to e a small cloud forming in front of us, but as we looked we se med to see man people walking through life As we looked closer we saw that it was our o d classmates At first we were surprised at how old they looked,but then we realized that it must be years in the future First we se med to see a vision of our senior class president, Buddy Swanpo Buddy is now a prosperous farmer and he and hls wife seem very hap y Next we se m to see J R McCord, J R had always had a pass'on for trading rercuryg and now he has a big car lot where he can trade many Percurys Now we see Bonnie Spears, Elsie Kimball and Phyllis Brady, who are Wy, my, who have we hereo Why Hannah and Franklin Jinks and Heavens!! they must have seen the show 'Cheaper By The Dozenn for they now have 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls At last Wayman Jones has realized his dream to become a great avricul turist farmer He now has one of the most prosperous farms in Oklahoma Here comes our top scholar of the class, Colleen Swango, who is now an M D secretary in one of the largest hospitals in the United States Barbara Stice and Alma Hollabaugh are now secretarys atthe high school Where we had at one ti e graduated Cherie Duvall, always the adventurous type, has at last succeeded in going to the moon Bentley Reisch, who always seemed to be a Romeo, has remained a bach elor Next comes Cherry Ann Fox who after her marriage is now living in South America with her husband and their two children Mary Sue Durham studied to be a concert pianist and now makes her home in Paris France Eugene Cooper and Janie V Gross a e now making records for the R C A and Columbia records We asked Janie V if she had seen Arlene Allen lately and she said that Arlene is now helping her husband run one of the largest farms in Oklahoma Yvonne Parks and Joann Fields, after going to law school and gradu ating as top students, hung out their proverbial Wshingle for business in none other than New York City Now we see Wayne Chenoweth,he is now President of the bore manufactur ing Company in Detroit, Michigan Wanda Newman, Shirley Schumacher, Janet Blackburn and Helen Rogers be came the first woman referees in the world Bob HcAffrey, after graduating from High School, had been appointed by the President to go to Russia and settle the disputes that were raging W might add that Bob was very successful in his mission. Doretha Griffith, always the quiet type while in school, seems to have sprouted wings since she graduated for as we see her she is in a foreign country, South America, looking for some long lost gold mine. What is this!! It looks like a horse bucking and it has a man on its back. Well of all things!! its Harry Tyler and as we look closer the brand on the horse is an H T Harry must have gone to Texas and bought himself a ranch New Shorty Armstrong appears tripping along on a stage where she 1: now appearing in a Broadway musical called 'The Taming of Sally LaDrew written and directed by Clifford Beehler who is now a famous playwright. Now comes Mary Ellen Emert and Faye Jean Hurst. They are famous missionaries in China and are happily married to their old childhood sweet- of lon a o. heartaext comgs gwo old women dressed in the style of the time with a big black car and a chauffeur, well I wonder who they could beg I thought that we had covered everbody in our class, OH NO!! they are us, yes, Agnes McKinzie and Loretta Gamble, and we are rich old maids, well, I guess thats life for you. . INCE 1951 1952 IN RUVIEW .f I ould like to take 's,,, this opportunity to Brief ly review the happenings of this school year There have been headaches, but many more pleasures that can be ldml 0110 ma w'ie'ed During the summer a new classroom was constructed for the Sixth Grade, as well ms an office for the Grade Principal The roofs were repaired on both the Grade and High School Buildings New shades were bought for the study hall, typing room, and the fourth and sixth grade rooms Most all classrooms were painted either partically or entirely All floors including the new Gym receive from one to two coats of floor finish Some new tables and chairs were bought for the first grade room, new chairs were secured for the third grade and a new'desk was purchased for the high school princ1pal's office The shop room was enlarged and remodeled to ccomodate the shop classes that started this year Many new hand tools were bought and it is hoped that many more additions will be made for the coming year After the resignation of two teachers, it was necessary to postpone Driver education until another qualified teacher was found Through the generosity of Lt Patterson of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol a class was conducted, another teacher was qualified and it was finally possible to offer Driver Education for the second semester The Junior High School purchased a filmstrip projector and darkening shades from the Junior High Activity fund Shrubbery, consisting mainly of evergreens, was bought and planted on the east side of the Junior High Building and the New ym, which improves the appearance of the buildings New boilers for both the Grade and High School Buildings ere bought and installed during the school year Approximately 3 0 feet of sidewalk was completed between the arious buildings, enabling the students to pass from building to uildingwithout walking in the mud More walks are planned for the future New baseball uniforms were bought for the boys' baseball team and nd new uniforms for the girls' softball team A new cyclorams curtain for the stage in the new Gym was purchased and installed Several new books and magazines were added to the Junior and Senior High Libraries, and 500 books were obtained from the Oklahoma Library Commission for use in the grade and high school A new overhead projector was purchased to be used mainly by the grade school I have really enjoyed working with the students and patrons of Nelch School, and I hope that I may have the privilege of writing the review for many years to come Please feel free to visit the school, as it is yours and through your continued cooperation Welch School will grow and progress Your Superintenden J -21:11:46 1... uforkmq ?'? j - if r - n 0, .' -. .. .....,.-........... . ..-....,-. ...-.-.-. ,-.-........... -.-.., ..-..--.... --------f--14'---,---'s'-'- -- - M' x I Q
