Pfwvfriv The prosperous city of Welch lay garlanded and expectant benea the June sunshine of the year 1970 Crowds of gaily dressed people were gathering in the gymnasium of the spacious high school grounds This gymnasium, by the way, was the pride of not only the school, but of the entire com unity, for it had been completed at the cost of thou sands of dollars and was tme scene of many important out door gather ings Today its seats were rapidly filllng with the hundreds who want ed to have a part in the reunion oi the class of 1950 'A fine class, asserted gray haired old Mr Newman nAs fine a class as the school ever sent out I was a member of the Board of Education en they graduated and we were certalnly proud of them 'Are most of the members heregn asked his companlon 'I'm told they are expecting a large representation 'A number are here, replied Mr Newman 'That's Jack Cook over there He came f ne one darts the day He is York, though he large numb r of in soon now in his own air plane this morning He certainly has a along the sky like a bird You know he's the orator of a corporatior lawyer, spends most of his time in New has a fine home up the Hudson They're expecting a the old class to come in on the Limited That will be He spoke truly, for in a few minutes eager faces were watching the approach of the early afternoon Alr Line Limited, whose swlft flight along the blue of the over hanginvs sky was accompanied with a whirr ing like the beating of man1 wings The band began their exultant melody of welcome, handkerchiefs were waving and excited voices call ing out greetings as the reat passenger plane came to a stop The members of the class of 19 O who were alr ady present, were instantly welcoming the new arrivals and presently the company turned toward the gymnasium The stage was set and all was ready for the reunion of the class who had graduated twenty years before The old time members gathered for the opening March There were heads with graylnv locks- if the truth is to be told, there were heads beginning to lose their locks, but the old fires of enthusiasm burned in eager eyes and perennial youth glowed in their hearts The band finished the introduction of a lively march and the class of 1950 of the Welch High School took its place on the flower trim ed platform, with perhaps more dignity but with the graceful ease of twenty years ago As the large company looked upon these men and women who had re turned with laurels for the old school they broke into deafening cheers of welcome, a welcome so hearty that those of the class who did not blush with pride blushed from sheer excitement The music changed to the strains of nAnerica and the assembled members began the song written for the occasior by Eugene Share, who had been given to the writing of verse in high school days They started out bravely, but even the voices Ida Mae Wallace, Wayne McClure, who had been noted in the old days, grew trembly and Leon Preskitt, ious as a ncut-up, was seen to blow his nose with Dear old school, 'tis to thee Long from thy tasks set free, We now return, From distant town and state, We come to celebrate, And old-tlme joys relate As love's fires burn of Paula Lindsey, singers of the class who had been notor great gusto and then furtively wipe his eyes.
