This building was not much different from other buildings in this community, except that it was larger and had more rooms in it. Each year toward the close of the sum er, many people came to this building and spent the day Upon closer examination, it was observed that there were two groups of these people, one group, which was very small in number, seemed to rule the much lar er group Later investigation, proved that the first group was cal ed the Faculty and the other the Students In the fall of 19 6 there appeared at this building a large group of young people, who asked that they might be admitted to this building and therefore learn more of what took place within its walls There were 8 of the people and they were called Fresh men As the days passed by there were certain events taking place and one was tne choosing of the leaders The president chosen was Jack Cook, Archie Neill was cnosen vice president, while James Graybeal held the position of Secretary and Treasurer Following the custom of previous years, a member of the Faculty, Mrs Pres kitt, was chosen as the sponsor, to assist them in deciding their various problems Time passed on and one day these people discovered they were no longer Freshmen They had completed the first year of work at this building at which they called day by day and now were known as Sophmores Several changes had taken place since the group first came Several of the previous members were searching through other buildings in different communities Some ceased to come because of other work while still others fell victim to Cup1d's Bow The member of the Faculty who guided tnem througatheir Sophomore year was Mr Cottam The leaders chosen were Wayne McClure, president, Paula Lindsey, Vice president, and Mary Nan Ingram, was Secretary Agair the year passed and the groul once again returned to work be ring another name This time they were known as Juniors Noth ing OL importance occured except that 1 new adviser was chosen Mrs Keithly was the one selected Cupid had again claimed a few membe s and the le der of the second year was again chosen while his helpers were Archie Neill, Vice president, and Laura Kay Anglin was chosen Secretary and Treasurer Several memvers of this group mem orized certain words and by combining them with action presented it to an audience The play was nThe Funny Brats ' 0 . O - 0 0 O 0 t O . and Treasurer. fl - 1 1- Q 9 .D C I O r a . , - I O Clava I-lioibty The Fall of l9h9 approached and for the last time the group be gan to come to this building The name given the group this time was Seniors They were observed to be very dignified Seniors They soon selected as their leaders Mary Nan Ingram, President, Rosemary Fottengim, Vice president, and Laura Kay Anglin was again chosen Secretary Treasurer Pvidently there president was a very able official The adviser of thls year was Mrs Wheatley The members of the group felt the need of a distinguishing mark and it had been decided that a band of metal should be worn around the finger and so it had been and the bands were selected and ordered their Junior year and were worn proudly their Senior year Another play was presented and was called NBill's Night Outn following Dennis Highsmith, Paula Lindsey, Rosemary Fottengim, Patricia Cruzan, Leon Preskitt, Denzil Corn, Nayne IcClure, Roberta Huxall, Bob Blackburn, Bertha Ruth Morgan, wary Nan Ingrar, Laura Kay Anglin, Peggy Hurst, and Bill Zimmerman The annual Queen and King selected by the class were Rosemary Cottengim and Jack Cook At the final counting the Senior King and Queen received the crowns and were crowned at the Senior Play At the end of the year 28 members were given a statement which stated that these 28 were graduates of the Welch Figh School the home of this institution was the school building It was in this building that this group was fitted for the work of Life The members of the class whom received parts in the playQwere the v I A n 'T -iiigps 7173, I . 567 1 cw uf Q 1EiiIIiii!, QQl'Zd!! O CT I A O 4 O ' o v J- Y, M Q U O X .L Pfwvfriv The prosperous city of Welch lay garlanded and expectant benea the June sunshine of the year 1970 Crowds of gaily dressed people were gathering in the gymnasium of the spacious high school grounds This gymnasium, by the way, was the pride of not only the school, but of the entire com unity, for it had been completed at the cost of thou sands of dollars and was tme scene of many important out door gather ings Today its seats were rapidly filllng with the hundreds who want ed to have a part in the reunion oi the class of 1950 'A fine class, asserted gray haired old Mr Newman nAs fine a class as the school ever sent out I was a member of the Board of Education en they graduated and we were certalnly proud of them 'Are most of the members heregn asked his companlon 'I'm told they are expecting a large representation 'A number are here, replied Mr Newman 'That's Jack Cook over there He came f ne one darts the day He is York, though he large numb r of in soon now in his own air plane this morning He certainly has a along the sky like a bird You know he's the orator of a corporatior lawyer, spends most of his time in New has a fine home up the Hudson They're expecting a the old class to come in on the Limited That will be He spoke truly, for in a few minutes eager faces were watching the approach of the early afternoon Alr Line Limited, whose swlft flight along the blue of the over hanginvs sky was accompanied with a whirr ing like the beating of man1 wings The band began their exultant melody of welcome, handkerchiefs were waving and excited voices call ing out greetings as the reat passenger plane came to a stop The members of the class of 19 O who were alr ady present, were instantly welcoming the new arrivals and presently the company turned toward the gymnasium The stage was set and all was ready for the reunion of the class who had graduated twenty years before The old time members gathered for the opening March There were heads with graylnv locks- if the truth is to be told, there were heads beginning to lose their locks, but the old fires of enthusiasm burned in eager eyes and perennial youth glowed in their hearts The band finished the introduction of a lively march and the class of 1950 of the Welch High School took its place on the flower trim ed platform, with perhaps more dignity but with the graceful ease of twenty years ago As the large company looked upon these men and women who had re turned with laurels for the old school they broke into deafening cheers of welcome, a welcome so hearty that those of the class who did not blush with pride blushed from sheer excitement The music changed to the strains of nAnerica and the assembled members began the song written for the occasior by Eugene Share, who had been given to the writing of verse in high school days They started out bravely, but even the voices Ida Mae Wallace, Wayne McClure, who had been noted in the old days, grew trembly and Leon Preskitt, ious as a ncut-up, was seen to blow his nose with Dear old school, 'tis to thee Long from thy tasks set free, We now return, From distant town and state, We come to celebrate, And old-tlme joys relate As love's fires burn of Paula Lindsey, singers of the class who had been notor great gusto and then furtively wipe his eyes. W 667 closed, Mary Nan Ingram, who had gained mucd poise fror presiding at class meetings, steeped forward and said 'Ladies and gentlemen, I have the sr at donor to introduce as the speaker of the day, Archie Neil, who has left his work in the busy New York 13' Office to be present at this gathering We are proud of Arcqie he has ained wealth and distinction, he has also gained a 11ve 'oct waist l ne ard an accumulation of avoirdupois in keepin wlth his dig nity He flew over here in his private plane, his next fli ht wlll be into oratory that will hold you spellbound ve know Archie!
