Supenintendentb Wleaaaqe Alexander Pope once wrote: 'Tis education forms the common mind, just as the twig is bent, the tree's inclined. Although much of the child's training is gained in the home and outside the classroom, the school does have an important part in forming the common mind. In addition to providing instruction in the basic fields of learning and in character training, it must also prepare the student for community life. How he lives, acts, and responds to those with whom he associates will not only affect his personal happiness but will also determine the contribution he will make toward the gen- eral betterment of society. The Ketchikan schools have striven conscientiously for the attainment of these goals and it is sincerely hoped that its efforts will bear fruit in the future lives of its students. , .J. E. Danielson the importance of keeping abreast of the times, the value of anticipating the direction of the flow or progress and preparing for it. Many years ago Mr. Danielson recognized the future need for a new high school building and started working for it. Now we have had that building for two years, and still he continues to plan for the hundreds more students who will pass through the school in the years to come. We can thank Mr. Danielson not only for dreaming, planning and working these past years to give us the new school but for continuing his efforts to create better educational opportunities at Kayhi even after his dream of a new high school building has been a realization for two years. 8
