THE 1960 RETROSPECT presents the _) PIONEER SPIRIT Foreword More than this red brick school building, more than our worn textbooks, more than our championship athletic teams, Kernersville is a spirit. Through this, our 1960 RETROSPECT, we attempt to present this spirit to you through THE PIONEER SPIRIT. We, your RETROSPECT Staff, have tried to bring to you the memories of your high school life and friends through the continuing chapters of history. Years from now as you leaf through your worn, but, we hope, precious history book, may all your memories be fond ones. = Contents dministration lasses ctivities thletics TONOrs SSG: weusscesscoseeeis iam In Memor DON BODENHEIMER iend; to the faculty, he was a thoughtful, intel- ao} ro) {e) re () ae) ow ”n ow = ()) G g q Vv rn am BRB =e 5 =| eet Oy tel = n $U a3 {e) BE ic) DD op ei ost: He gave much and knew not that he gave at allo im m For this we bless h KAHLIH GIBRAN Dedication he to the England of Chaucer. ich we lay our troubles. is the doorstep on wh Her hand has led us from the France of Labic Her heart to youth ion t . 1ca illed by ded is fulf ts have planted is one that Her life inds our respect for her. in our m i All her tra ill never cease. We were very excited as we stepped up to the second plateau of our education. Our leaders that year were Mrs. Pauline Kuykendall, Mrs. Gayle McMahon, and Mr.Jack Blaylock. That year we opened the eyes of the upperclassmen, a difficult task for freshman. We ac- complished this by excellent junior varsity teams in all sports, many good voices in the glee club, a large percentage of the cheerleaders, and by having Gail McGee crowned homecoming queen. After a short break, our excursion was continued. Then we were called sophomores, but we weren't really what the word means. To guide us this time, we had Mrs. Shirley Walker, Mrs. Virginia Kennedy, and Mr. Gene Womble. That year was quite a success for us also. We had several varsity athletes in all sports, and they bolstered our teams to victory. The baseball team took its second straight state championship with our help. The most outstanding event of the year, however, was our sophomore play, One Mad Night. With the proceeds we made a start toward the funds required for our Junior-Senior Banquet. After another intermission, we entered in 1958 as juniors. We were beginning to hold the upper hand in many of the school activities. Juniors dominated, to a certain extent, the football team, and there were many juniors on the basketball and the baseball teams. The advisors that year were Mrs. Shirley Walker, Mrs. Jeanette Graves, and Mr. Carl Clarke, and our class 35 president, who did a fine job, was Dickie Fulp. Our Junior-Senior, which was quite a success, was held in the ballroom of the Robert E. Lee Hotel. The theme was Mardi Gras, and it was carried out marvelously. Another big event for us was participating in the class night exercises. In September, 1959, we again entered good ole’ K.H.S., this time with a different outlook. Now, we had all matured and realized what was waiting before us, LIFE, We all seem to have taken this year more seriously than others. Under Mrs. Jestina Vickery, Mrs. Ruth Linville, and our president, Rickey Jarrell, we made allour plans includingthe unforgettable New York trip. The trip was really a clincher for all those years together. For so long we had gotten to know each other from the outside, but the trip let us live together and be drawn closer by learning eachother as we really are. This year, we dominated all school activities, and as in past years our athletic teams were successful. Our final Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Starmount Forest Country Club. Now, on class night, as our high school careers have almost terminated we can see how wonderful it has all been, and would like to live it over again. As such is impossible in this world we take it in stride as we have so many things. Tomorrow night as we receive our diplomas, doors more vast than the last will open—these being the doors LIF E, PHIL M, BERRIER Class Historian Class Poem J Our stairway of dreams will be ended tonight, And to most of our friends, we say good night. Memories will linger on and on But in our hearts, there'll be another song. As we think back through all the years,. We cannot help but shed a few tears. Times have been great, and times have been rough, But all in all, nothing was too tough. There are so many things that we will remember And oh, how they shall forever linger. They will be with us always and forever, Intangible things, impossible to sever. We started our journey twelve years ago, At the time, it seemed to be so slow. Now that we're going our separate way, It seems that we met only yesterday. To our parents and teachers, we owe our success, They led our paths with visions of happiness. They were forever patient and ever understanding And never for a moment were they demanding. Tonight for the last time, we walk down the aisle, And through our tears, you'll see a smile. Saying good-bye is hard to construe, So let's just say farewell; adieu, adieu, adieu. Twelve years can do a lot. Here we all are at Radio City Music Hall to see MARTHA PLUNKETT as. she performs in her debut with the New York Ballet Company. It is surprising how much fame the old class has received. SUSIE VANHOY and JANE RUSSELL are right behind Martha reaching for fame also. Walking into the lobby I see DENNIS WALLS, He is chief usher heye at the theater, and there are his two assistants, ADAM CASPER and RUSSELL TYSON. Those boys really look sharp in their blue uniforms. Here come two members of the New York Philhar- monic Orchestra, BILLY GARDNER and GLENN McGEE, Billy has come a long way from high school; he plays the violin now. Glenn is still playing that old trombone. Doesn't seem that many of the gang remember me. Wait, there's one I know will recognize me. JOLLY JOHN MORGAN, how is the world's greatest cigar salesman? He and PHILLIP BERRIER have really made a killing with their new cigar without tobacco. I guess most of us knew that those two would end up as business partners. Could my eyes be deceiving me? No, that is JAMES RODDY, He is one of the biggest gamblers in the country now. There are his two body-guards, PAUL HASKINS and JOHNNY IDOL, I understand that Paul is teaching weight lifting on the side. I guess I had better go overto the desk and see what time the show is to start. Those two receptionists look very familiar. Isee now. They are the telephone oper- ators here inthe theater, PATSY APPLE and GAIL McGEE. Those two really keep busy on their phones. How are you REVEREND GOOD? One of the finest ministers in the country—BUD really made a name for himself. There are GWYN and MAURICE WOODS. They look like a happy couple. Gwyn is now Assistant Vice-Presi- dent of Ford Motor Company. His secretary is of course Maurice, his wife. Here comes one of the most contented boys inthe whole group, BILLY STAFFORD. I can still remember when he won the safe driving award for Greyhound Bus Company. He has come a long way since then. Stafford Bus Company is known the world over. MARION CREWS and DEVON LEMMONS are driving for him. The company specializes in taking school groups to New York. Yes, most of the old class came up for the show to- night. We have put some of our class frdm one end of this country to the other. Many of them headed out west in search of fortune and fame. Take SPENCER WILLARD —he went about as far west as you can go. He is now assistant manager ofthe Japanese Rockets, an up-coming baseball team in Japan. He doesn't get lonely, though. He has MORRIE SIMPSON, his third base coach over there to keep him company. I wonder if those two are satisfied with their life? I guess so, they would be happy anywhere around baseball. Texas got one of our class. JOSEPHINE BALDWIN is owner of the famous Lone Star Nursery. Talking of people who went west, there is one of the best known women around today, SUE LEMONS. She took off for Hollywood and really hit the town with a splash. I guess everyone has seen her new movie, On | | | | Senior Class Prophecy the Strand which was filmed at Myrtle Beech. BETTY and MARY TILLMAN are in Hollywood also. They are doing set designs for BOGGS and GABLE Productions. Those two, THETUS and OMIE started off with just a small theater in Kermersville, and now thay own one of the biggest moving picture studios in the country. The wood in this place sure is nice. I wonder where it came from. Oh, now I see—ALICE LAIN Metropolitan Lumber Company. Like father, like daughter. And there is another one who is associated with Alice. SANDRA DILLON, who is president of the nationally known Builders of Better Brick Homes. She has built homes all over the nation, with the help of GARSON BILES, her chief plumber and mechanic, and TOMMY HEATH, her chief Wiring and electronics man. Cigarettes! Cigars! LILLIAN JONES, I didn't know that she was the cig- arette girl here at the Center. The business looks pretty good. Everyone seems to be smoking the new Kerners- villes. They're the ones that taste good as a cigarette should. When BOBBY CARSON recommended them, their sales totals soared to an all-time high. Bobby is the world's foremost authority on any type of tobacco or any of its by-products. He has beentesting cigarettes for the government forthe lastten years and doesn't have cancer yet. BRENDA MERRITT and KATHY ROBERSON own a new dress shop near the theater. I understand that they are very successful in their new undertaking. Each day you can read in the paper that they are going to have a fashion show to exhibit a new design or style from their shop. LUCY SPAINHOUR is the head model at the shop. She is also an instructor at EMMA STAFFORD's school of good etiquette. America's finest young ladies have been trained in the Do's and Don'ts of modern living in her school. She is always present at big dinners at the 41 White House to make sure everything is in proper order for the occasion. The White House is about the only place our class hasn't put anyone. We do have a lot of hopefuls, though. Take EDDIE IDOL—he has been in politics almost his entire life. He started off in high school and later be- came the mayor of Kernersville; From there it was a long road and going up all the time. He is now a Senior senator from North Carolina. With BRENDA McGEE as his campaign manager, he is sure to take a crack at the White House before too long. Oh! I forgot. There is one person who has been in the White House—BRENDA MARLOWE, She designed the interior for the whole new wing that was added in 1968. She certainly used her artistic talent to great advantage. I wonder who else is around that I know. KIRKMAN and LEE, the finest name in foods. CAROL and DORIS have served over one million new customers in their restaurant. It has been on the corner in Kernersville since 1965. Success hasseemedto follow those two girls. What does this billboard say? Win a BOBBY GAMMONS' swimming pool. Itseems as if everyone is talking about that boy and his swimming pools. He is selling them by the millions. The biggest one is right here in New York with SIBBIE SMITH as the head life guard, | Imight as well read my newspaper while I am waiting for the show to start. This is a pretty interesting story. High school typing teacher wins speed typing award. Hey, that picture looks familiar. No wonder, that's SANDRA ALBERT. She was the fastest typist in our class. Let's see. Albert scored record 200 words per minute. I wonder if she ever got married. What other articles would be of special interest to- Senior Class Prophecy me? MARTHA TAYLOR chosen Medical Advisor to Mexico. SYBIL McMICHAEL becomes Deanof English at Kernersville University. It appears that the paper is full of news about the old gang from K,H,S. I wonder if any of the boys are in today's news. Here is an article about the wrestling matches at Madison Square Garden. The main event matches JIMMY CINDERELLA STOCKTON against CLAD Y THE BEAR GAMMONS, That should certainly be an interesting match. Both of those boys are well known in the wrestling world. Speaking of celebrities, there are PATS Y VANCE and JO-ANNE THOMAS, They are the last word in society these days. Both of them married into vast sums - of money and now are living without a care in the world. When JEAN WILKES did the story of Jo-Anne's life on her society page of the New York Times, she quoted her as saying that it's hard to live when your whole life is in the eye of the public, but she stated later in the article that it didn't bother her too much. Here comes HUBERT VOSS, He is now coach of the Montreal Tigers, a Canadian football team. He has had a real successful season with the help of his star halfback, RICKEY JARRELL, They found their fortune in Canada. That must be a realland of opportunity. Rickey and Hubert are not the only ones from the class to head to the north. GEORGIA WOODY is also in Canada teaching school. BECKY COLTRANE is another who found fame and fortune in the lands to the north. She went farther north than the others. Be cky was the first person to set up a government supported Welfare Association in the forty- ninth state. She has a home for wayward and lonesome Eskimos. Who is that fellow with the good tan? I know who that iss LARRY NEWSOME, the owner and operator of 42 the Pad at Ocean Drive Beach, South Carolina. GARY HUTCHINS runs the bar and BOBBY MITCHELL is the chief bouncer. RITA SHORE and PHYLLIS BEESON are hard at work right here in Rockefeller Center. They are guides and spend endless hours walking the halls of these, buildings showing them to out-of-town visitors. I think the circus is in town. Yes, I know it is. There is the star clown, TOMMY GRIFFIN, He is with N N Circus. The N's stand for JACKIE KNOTT and JOHNNY NELSON. The circus plays from New York to Florida with Tommy, better known as Bozo, as its star attraction. PEGRAM and CALHOUN Air Conditioners. SHIRLEY and CAROLE have a growing business. At the rate they are going, it won't be long before every home has one of their products. It must be time for the show to begin. I can hear the choir starting to sing. Those pure tones could only come from voices directed by LINDA LAWSON. Of course, she could not do it without the help of her assistant, MARJORIE MOTSINGER, What's all that commotion? Ishould have known. BARBARA JONES rushing in at the last minute. She has more to do than any three people in the country. At last count she was president of eleven clubs and member of four others. There walks the busiest housewife in the world. In the words of REVEREND BLACKBURN, God Bless Them All. There they all go.
