We were full of anticipation, expectation, and joy. We had before us four years of highest hopes. These hopes have not been daunted in these years. Mrs. William Fulp and Mr. R. M. Hinshaw were our home room teachers. Most of the fifty-six members took the first year seriously and worked toward the goal of becoming sophomores. The second year in high school found the class with new home room teachers, Mrs. E. B. Parks and Miss Katie Mae Newton. The class had several parties which they thoroughly enjoyed. A trip to the capitol at Raleigh was fur as well as educational. During this year we chose class colors, green and white; class motto, ‘““Together and Forward,” and a class flower, the lily. Those we still keep. Our Junior year under Miss Katie Mae Newton as home room advisor was a most interesting one. The chief event of the year, outside of our studies, the Junior-Senior reception was held at the Robert E. Lee Roof Garden on April 17. Dick Jones’ orchestra provided music for the gala affair. All the Juniors and Seniors were there along with the faculty and Mr. and Mrs. Cash. During the year the Juniors sponsored a rather unique basketball game on skates. This game was enjoyed by all who saw it and who participated in it. Our Senior year, under the guidance and_ direction of Mr. J. W. Bowers as home room teacher, has been a busy one. The class voted to put out the third edition of the Retrospect, which was gotten out in May. The Juniors gave the Seniors a reception in the Reynolds Grill on April 26. We Seniors appreciated this very much. Each member of the class had a grand time. Our high school days have been happy and useful ones. We thank each of our teachers for their co-operation and guidance and to Mr. J. R. Blackwell, our Principal, we extend our most sincere gratitude for his helpful and sympathetic interest throughout our high school career. The president in turn appointed Ershil Parrish, Chairman of the Program Committee; Virginia Warren, Chairman of the Social Committee; Maxine Hepler, Chairman of Ways and Means Committee; and Zona Winfree, Publicity Chairman. Mrs. M. W. Tucker, Mrs. R. V. Wilson, Mrs. R. M. Graves, and Mrs. J. A. Linville were chosen as grade mothers. Ershil Parrish, Zona Winfree, Sara Graves, Maxine Hepler, Virginia Warren, Nancy Kirk, and Mary Barber were selected from our class as the marshals for commencement. Many delightful parties have been enjoyed by the class at the Community House during the year. The month before Christmas much of our time was devoted to selling Christmas cards and paper as a means of raising money for the Junior-Senior Reception. The week-end of March 8th Ershil Parrish, Maxine Hepler, and Mary Barber attended the Beta Club Convention in Raleigh. On the 18th and 19th of March the Juniors sponsored “I Take This Woman” at the local theater. A dance at the Community House climaxed our money-making projects. On April 26th the big moment o f our year arrived. The Juniors graciously entertained the Seniors, High School Faculty, School Board, and Mrs. and Mrs. T. H. Cash at the Roof Garden of the Robert E. Every- thing went as expected during the first quarter, with both sections attain- ing high rankings in the county on the various subjects. During the second quarter basketball was begun. Five members of the girls’ section participated in this fine, popular sport and six boys brought the class honor on the various boys’ basketball teams. Just before Christmas we entertained ourselves at a party in the Community House. Bingo was played among other games and the results became freakish, as one person won four times and another three. At the end of the first semester Eva Rich, who had been a faithful, good-natured member of our class, moved away and Phylis Steidley, a smart little lass, joined our sophisticated group. Section 9A-2 of our class established a new perfect attendance record in the school of 54 days. Everyone was sorry to see it terminated. Mz-ny Sophs went with Miss Newton and Company to see “‘Gone With the Wind’ in Winston-Salem on a very windy day. We glady paid the price. As the third quarter drew to a close, football was begun with ten boys of fine talent from 9A-1 going out for this popular sport. In the Glee Clubs five boys and three girls represented the class. Horace Parrish and William Joyner sang solos and Jane Linville and Jane Pegg were contestants for the honor of singing the soprano solo in the district music contest. The latter were eliminated only by a narrow margin. ‘ Five in the combined groups of the ninth grade have made the honor and good citizenship rolls regularly. All of us are deeply grateful to Mrs. Brower and Mr. Blake, our home room teachers, and to Miss Newton, Miss Lindsey, and Mrs. Kuy- kendall for instrucing us in diverse arts of life. Our class is looking forward to the next year with confidence and expectations of greater things from each one, and from the group as a whole. We intend to stick to our motto, ““There’s room at the top and better company there,’’ and eventually to achieve this worthy goal. WALSER H. There were seventy-one in our voyage with Mrs. Pauline Kuykendall and Miss Katie Mae Newton as the class sponsors. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: President, Sue Butner; Vice-President. Clay Vance; Secretary, Mary Lee Mooney; Treasurer, Robert Linville. The following grade mothers were also elected: Mrs. Varick Mooney, Mrs. P. A. Butner, Mrs. J. C. Ragland, Mrs. Robah Kerner. Our faculty is composed of Mrs. Kuykendall, Miss Newton, Miss Lindsey, Mr. Blake, and Mr. Bowers. The class has enjoyed many social activities such as an Educa- tional Tour of Winston-Salem; a trip to Chapel Hill and Raleigh, and a Halloween Party in October. We are planning to spend a week-end at Myrtle Beach this spring. The eighth grade boys sponsored a popularity contest between the school and town for the benefit of Football Equipment. The eighth grade received all the honors except two, which were won by town people. The winning Freshmen were Waymer Musten, first; Clarisse Snow and Clay Vance, second, and Sue Butner, third. These eighth graders and the two members of town will sponsor the first football game next fall. Next year we will be one mile nearer the realization of our High School voyage— that of being a Sophomore. As the year rings down the curtain on our Freshman voyage, we hope that we may continue to cling to our motto, ‘‘Life is a picture, so paint it well.” MARGARET SHIELDS é g Z é Z g 8 ‘ 3 Z 4 g g g Z g Z 4 Z Z 4 1g 1g 1g ig ae 1g ¢ 4 4 4 4 4 Z g g g Z Z £ VA g g 4 g Z Z g g 3 5 4 k ; j 4 g 1g : y Y 4 CILLA LL ddd db dbdddddddddddddddddddidddddiddddiddddiddiddsdin} rn on eceesen wnsnee hte PAU AS Oe nn aseie ne = soem ' ' gute week ae} ICS SS uN an AN “IN i x = le N “4 NY . ma ait AN 8 IN) eIN k N aN aN AN aly AN NI tk Ik SESS SSCS ee FOOTBALL inville Mr. Bowers . He has quite a record in Kernersville School, having seen twelve classes graduate, of which some are now outstanding citizens of Kernersville. Two of these classes he watched as they progressed from the beginning to the end of their school careers in Kernersville. Mr. Southern is known as just plain ‘“‘Reecy”’ “to all the student body and is as highly esteemed as any member of the faculty. It is seldom that he fails to grant a favor. No job is too small or large for him. He has an uncanny foresight, predict- ing the probable success or failure of pupils who enter school. He has been heard to say, ‘“When I see a boy enter the first grade, I can tell whether he is going to graduate or not.” In the year 1931, while oiling the school floors during the Christmas holidays, he unfortunately met with an accident which resulted in the breaking of a leg, but this wasn’t to keep him out for long. “‘Reecy’’ was soon back on the job, and except for a few days of sickness and marketing his tobacco he has been on the job always with staunch faithfulness to his duties. Compliments of SMITH’S BEAUTY SHOP Mio Se ee Senior Class, I like your motto, “Together and For- ward.” Since the death of my father the people of Kernersville have been so friendly to us that I take this opportunity to thank them. I believe in the work ] am doing and in the work I hope to do in the future. I believe that much can be accomplished by honest means, and that man is never down and out until he has lost faith in himself. I believe that the only thing in life worth while is to help other people. NASH PRINTING CO.
