This is the last year we will see Mrs. Gumz smiling and greeting those who walk by the office. She has worked at the school for 21 years, and after all these years of dedicated service, she is retiring. Mrs. Gumz was born April 11, 1909, on a farm in Uncas, Oklahoma. She attended the Vinland School in Kerman from the first to third grade. Mrs. Gumz spent her high school years at Arkansas City High School. She also attended the Winfield, Kansas Business College. In 1950, Mrs. Gumz began to work in the cafeteria on the old KUHS campus. She became the attendance clerk in 1951 and has been clerk ever since. She has served under seven different administrators during her years of service. We thank you Mrs. Gumz, for your enthusiasm and willingness to help everyone. Your cheerfulness and understanding made all of us dependent upon you. - Q Simba, Tis CM MM, bows-fmsx Xa Emvxsgol ,ma AMA .s QM K XCR iii AM Mrk M ex? MUMXQ ss 1771! KERIVIAN HIGH LION KERMAM CALIF. A GREAT DANE THAT STOOD OUT AMONG THE CRUWDS American Field Service did it again, this time in the form of a tall, dark, good-looking Dane named Jan Zangenberg, Jan was rather quiet except for the click of a camera, which seemed to be standard equipment with him, This familiar click could be heard oftenf Another phase of photography that interested Jan was printing. Working in the darkroom took up much of his spare time. Living with the Herman Scheidts was an opportunity for Jan to learn what it is really like to be a fa-rm boy, Working in the field with his American brothers and sister was a new kind of experience, His usual companion was Russell, a junior at K, U, H, S, A missing face in our crowd this year was that of Marilyn Moore, our own A,F,S. student -.S who spent the year in the Netherlands, Student ozmezl Cleaned House Jim Lutz presided over a somewhat streamlined Student Council. Attendance was checked at each meeting and limited to elected representatives. The in- stallation of a student phone, the Homecoming Dance, a birthday party for our exchange student and other activities were sponsored by this year-'s Council. Giggles and light-hearted groans were typical responses to the humorous quips of President Lutz. r.-, -E 1 Azz 'ggi Vice-President Kathy Kubo ,A A -1 ,JK u . Several fund-raising activities were undertaken dur- ing the year. The Class of 1971 sponsored a Spaghetti Dinner and an after-game dance to finance their trip to Disneyland on June 4th. As members of the Pep Squad, several junior girls stayed after school daily to practice routines. Rally Chairman Debbi Stilson organized committees to be responsi- ble for various aspects of the rally. During roll call, the louder each class yelled, the closer Jeff Mitchell jumped to the top of the Spirit Ladder. The KUHS Showboat sunk the Vikings' ship. To celebrate the victory, the glamorized Carol Nale dedicated the song, Close to You to representatives of the wrestling and basketball teams. Her per- formance was followed by an unusual dancing troupe of litt1e men. p ' 'H in l ' 'N' i , :id 51564 Q E H' , A ' ' -. 9 - H, p mst: .5 .Zi E , In . - ' ' ' '.:.f-'H -, v 4- W Q 5? 3:3 gs? fx .2 3 mf 11 . w ,. L - .U si 4 Really Measured Up The Class of 1973 experienced a year filled with typical sophomore involvements. Many of them got behind the wheel of a car for the first time during driver's training. Their red class rings arrived just before Christmas vacation, a perfect time to flaunt them. The sophomores held the first competition rally on 7 January 15th. Rally ChairmanL Carobfn Miller! made certain that theractors knew their lines. The skit was based on a Roman trial. Emperor Scott Foth was sentenced to die by the fangs of a vicious lion - Jessie Acosta. Wolf whistles and laughter filled the gym when six shapely f?j cheerleaders took the floor. Masculine physiques lurked somewhere beneath the make-up, hair, and extra padding. SEATED: Vice-President Gloria Valdez, President Bob Kubo, Secretary-Treasurer Geneieve Madrid, and Social Chairman Karen Velarde. STANDING: Sergeant-at-Arms Mike Texeira, Rally Chairman Carolyn Miller, Representative Ken Lea, Representative Vicki Samarin, and Representative Becky Botelho. Freshman Fledglings Flew Successfully The members of the Class of 1974 proved to be exceptionally am- bitious. Their presence was felt in most organizations and athletic teams. The freshmen suffered through many initiations, but usually seemed to come out with a grin. Their chrysanthemum corsage sale on Homecoming Night was a major money making project, in addition to a class pin sale held in the spring. The competition rally, under the direction of Rally Chairman Janet Delarm, was presented on January 29th. The highlight of the rally was an eagle plucking contest. Paul Gentry, representing the Frosh-Soph basketball team, won the spirited event. , 2 ,ir V li 5 g i. -. , 5 A -L 1 i'v it 'TQFV XJ . ..1 7 is ' - ,ds ,if Q sage H mae F gm was ' -J-I 1 Q SEATED: Representative Susan Zfxmwalt, President Willie Tapia, and Rally Chairman Janet Delarrn.
