FRESHMAN, INITIATIDN Friday morning, September 18, found eighteen attractive Freshmen attired in their sleeping garments arriving at school for one of the highlights of the year, Freshman initiation. To greet them upon their arrival was a group of happy Seniors, beaming with authority. In addition to their night clothes, the Freshman had ribbons of green in their hair and around their necks. On the ribbons were strung an assortment of tin cans and pine cones. ' ' During the day they were kept busy carrying books for Seniors, praising Alah, and doing other tasks given them by the Seniors. At noon they paraded through Kerby, showing themselves off. - In the evening they came back to school for the purpose of finishing up the day in fine style. They were taken for an airplane ride and they rolled burned corks across the floor with their noses. Fonfrefreshments they were served tempting morsels of plain gelatin, oysters and sour grapes. They then blew in water and in flour, which formed a thick paste on their faces. At the close of the evening they unsctambled their shoes, which had previously been tied together by the Seniors, and then some dancing followed. They departed fully initiated into- our midst. LINCOLN ESSAY CONTEST Charlene Miller won the Lincoln Essay Contest, sponsored by the Daughters of Union Veterans organization of Grants Pass, this year. This organiiation entertained Charlene at a tea held in the County Library and had her name engraved on the Lincoln Trophy cup which remains with the school. The three best essays written by Kerby High Students and sent to Grants Pass for final judging were written by Charlene Miller, Peggy Hlaberman, and Cleo Doney. MOVIES AT SCHOOL The school has enjoyed several motion pictures this year, they are as follows: Wood for War, Argentine Primer, Henry Brown, Farmer, Ever Since Eden, Beneficient Repro- bate, Years of Progress, There Is More 'to Trees Than Lumber, Assembly Lines of De- fense, Colombia. With funds derived from the Smoker the following articles of importance were pur- chased for the school: two baskerballs, a new stopwatch, two basketball goals and nets, a set of boxing gloves, and it also paid for the laundering of towels used in gym class. Initiation day for the new lettermen took place April 9, 1943, when the following boys were initiated: Glenn Halm, Lee Hassler, Frank McLean, Ernie Krauss, George Kel- lert and jack Owen, manager. Their talent was foreseen by the marvelous dances, speeches and musical ability presented by them in front of the student body. Election day for the officers of 1943L1944took place May 5, 1943.
