KEPPLER, boatswain's mate first class, Congressional Medal of Honor winner at the Battle of Savo Island when aboard the USS SAN FRANCISCO. KEPPLER's keel was laid at the San Francisco Yard of the Bethlehem Steel Company on 23 April 1944. She was accepted on 20 May 1947 and was commissioned on 23 May 1947 as DD 765. After her shakedown cruise, KEPPLER sailed to the Far East. She returned in May of 1948 and operated from San Diego, spending part of the time as the flagship of COMDESFLOT 3. 'rr 1949 KE LER entered the San Francisco Shipyard for conversion to an escort destroyer. Upon completing .ugsyievsh trai ' t San Diego, KEPPLER was deployed to the Atlantic and became the flagship of COMDESFLOT -l .,,duriz1,Qpla3l!gns in Northern waters. 1950 operations included an advanced anti -submarine warfare operation .?,hJa :iercises PORTREX and CARIBEX in February and March, plane guarding in April. ln July KEPPLER Wft New on a Mediterranean cruise. Upon arrival in Greece, she was ordered through the Suez Canal to the Fa' it. During the period August 1950 to February 1951 she was attached to the Seventh Fleet, operating in I' , 53 X1 and Korean waters. She then returned to Newport and spent the rest of the year at home except for 3g',EX in October and November. 1952 KEP LER deployed to the NELM area for hunter-killer operations and took part in the GRANDSLAM tion. KE R spent April through August in United States waters and then sailed to Northern Europe for ,L f-.ation L. 1953 KEPPLER went to the Boston Shipyard and then to Guantanamo Bay for refresher training. In 1954 she participated in Operation SPRINGBOARD, hunter-killer operations, and then was assigned to LWCNELM. She visited in Italy, Greece, France, Northern Ireland, Germany, England and Holland. .-JEPPLER spent 1955 in type training and hunter-killer operations in United States waters except for a short ., .5 -o Portugal. Commander Bagbey received his commission in 1942 and spent the war years aboard the USS OSMOND INGRAM IDD 255j and the USS KILLEN IDD 593j, the Iatter of which he became Executive Officer. Ifie took part in the Leyte Invasion, the battle of Surigao Straits, the Invasions of Brunei Bay and Borneo, and the Occupation of NorthernJanan.After:I period of inactive duty during which time he distinguished him- self in the training of Reserve units, he was recalled to destroyers, the USS DORTCII IDD 6701 as Executive Officer in 1951. Following this, Commander Bagbey served in Ger- many as Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Section of MAAC- FRG, an organization which helped train West German Navy personnel on American rninesweepers and destroyers.
