The Kcpplcr was officially at't't'ptt'd for the United States Navy by P. AI. Gaitiglio, CDR., USN, tht' Kcpplcfs first commanding officer. This is the story of an xlnierican hghting ship and its Krew, the men who lizfe and work on lroard, the men who issue orders and the men who carry them ont, the men who szvah the decks and the men who dirty them again. This is the story of the men who cook the chow and the men who gripe about it, the men who plot the stars, and the man who has the conn. This is the story of an American lighting ship at sea and in foreign ports, yes, this is the USS Kcppler. The ship was named in honor of Reinhardt john Keppler, Boat- swain's Mate First Class, USN llleceasedj. He was horn in Ralston, Washington, january 22, 1918. He graduated from the Wapato High School, lWapato, Washington, in june, 1935, and enlisted in the Navy at Seattle on February 19, 1936. He had continuous seruice and ad- vanced through the various enlisted ratings to that of Boatswain Mate First Class, which rating he attained on October I, 1941. Kepplef reported on hoard the USS San Francisco on May 27, 1940. He par- ticipated in several major campaigns during World Hfar II. Keppler died as a result of zwninrls receizfed in action on Noitem her 15, 1942. He has lzeen awardt'a' the Aledal of Honor fl05llttlt7lUltSl'Y, and also the Purple Heart posthumously.
