They take part in practically everything the ship takes part in, from radar navi- gation to providing information on targets in shore bombardment. These varied operations which are countless in number are performed in a small room about the size of your living room at home, with one dilference - it is almost com- pletely dark. The origin of the word Radar is taken from four abbreviations: RA - Radio, D - Detection, A - And, R - Ranging. 1. 1 ELECTRO IC TECH ICIA S The Electronics Technicians on board ship have the following gear to maintain in operating condition: surface and air search radar: radio transmitters in the low, medium, high, very high frequency range along with their accompanying receivers: about six radar repeaters throughout the ship: l,OR.-KN: range Iinding equipment: crew's ampliliers: remote transmitter equipment: antennas for all radio gear. Besides all this the EIMS maintain a stork of radio and radar parts and tubes which include 30,000 items. Included in their work is the gear needed to keep all the other gear in operating condition: such as signal generators, marker generators, ostilloscopes, multimeters, tube testers, Irequenev measuring meters ol the eavitv and heterodvne types. All the records ol' peyIortnant'e and maintenance ol all the electronic gear presents quite a lot of paper work to the l2'l S. .Xlthougli not called upon to do so, the Ii'l S are given training in the operation and service ol SONAR and teletvpe terminal equipment.
