As the guests arrived, they found themselves surrounded by the splendor of ancient Rome. The elegant Roman Pillars and fountains provided a magnificent setting for the dancing. From the Country Club, everyone dashed home to change clothes hefore a movie at the Iowa The- ater. The varsity team has done all of these. ln the conference the Chiefs won every game and placed Greg Douglas on the first all- conference team, Jim Ewing and Bob Huiskamp on the second team, and Ron Bennett re- ceived honorable mention. Even with this impressive display, Coach Jones believed that Ken Schwab and Jim Dennis also deserved recognition. These boys are a team not individuals, and the team has been honored. It has been ranked second in the state all year. Our team deserves this rating. They were not beaten during the season which set a new school record. This is the first undefeated team in the school's history. One other record may be set. Greg Douglas is well on his way toward breaking the KHS scoring record held by Larry Swift. Greg is averaging over 26 points a game. In the first round of tournament play, the Chiefs eliminated Ft. Madison High by a score of 83-47 at Burlington Notre Dame. In the semi-finals, Waco provided a greal deal of competition before falling 6?-50. In the finals Keokuk broke the game wide open with a fine defensive second quarter, becoming district champs for the fourth year in a row by defeating Burlington 7?-55 and entering substate play against Ottumwa. Until the end of the final game, the team was in contention for their second straight conference Grown. They lost only two conference games and both of these were bitter defeats. The first was to Assumption, 19 to 21, and the second was a loss to Burlington while Coach Cormack was in the hospital with an ailing stomach. fThe loss did not soothe his pain. This year's team was interesting to watch due to the wide open passing attack which the Chiefs used. Mac Hampton, John Nepote, and Bob Huiskanp were the major components of this passing combination which led the conference the entire year. Bob was the league's leading passer, completing 73 passes for 965 yards and 8 touchdowns. John led the con- ference in pass receiving by making 29 catches far 556 yards, but he was followed closely by Mac Hampton who finished second by catching 29 passes for 343 yards. To attest Mac's versatility, he also led the conference in scoring. Another high point of the season was the goal line stands the Chiefs were able to master. Five times the determined Chiefs led by all conference tackle Andy Dunne and a fine defensive line re- pelled their opponents inside the ten-yard line. Credit goes to every staff member who 'racked' their brains writing copy and who got 'stuck up' gluing pictures. Mr. Gowing can sigh with relief knowing he can once again reclaim his office, he will not hate to write anymore yellow slips, and he will not be forever misplacing the copy he just had. Yes, the never-ending confusion has stopped, and the Comment for l966 has been completed. Hopefully, these pages will serve to remind the class of 1966 of the many wonderful achievements and victories that have taken place in their senior year. The classes of '67 and '68 can look at this yearbook knowing what can be possible for them. We have tried to reproduce a reminder of all the won- derful moments and activities that have made this year the greatest. Any time, any place, the 1966 Comment can bring back many fond and lasting memo- ries. In closing another volume of the Comment we the staff would like to sal- ute two people who have had a great deal to do with whatever success can be claimed for these books of memories that are produced annually. Catllryn and John Coffey have been so patient and understanding as we fumbled and delib- erated on several choices we faced. So we say thank you for many, many years of faithiul help, Mr. and Mrs. Coffey. We S' WW W ,mf 164
