Conse- quently there was a tremendous lack of experience at the opening of the season, which re- sulted in errors. As the season wore on the coaches were desperately trying to find the right combinations. A steady improvement was noticed in the squad, and team spirit was always commendably high. Much credit goes to the players in facing great odds. The Chiefs played the number one team in the state, Burlington, twice and the number four team, Mt. Pleasant, once. Even against strong opponents the offense was continually successful in entering the scoring column and was shut out only once. After a relatively slow start, the KHS basketball team accounted for early season losses by capturing several tournament contests. As of the printing date of this yearbook, the Chiefs are billed against the Clinton River Kings in State District play. The immediate season itself included a double round-robin Little Six Conference schedule plus a number of difficult non-conference games. Our Chiefs finished third in the basketball conference and made a strong bid for top honors. They could only come close in the important early games. Later in the year, after the title was a remote possibility, several thrilling battles were waged against the conference leader. The highlights were a 70-68 defeat at the hands of the No. 3 team in the state, Muscatine, and a heart -breaking loss to Ottumwa in a double overtime. The only vivid change in starting lineups came when Guy was replaced by Powell in late- season after he suffered a bad sprained ankle. The high scorers varied from game to game, and on many occasions the team functioned commendably well. Depth has been a favorable quality in the Keokuk High squad, and Coach Bill Jones, a newcomer to the coaching staff at KHS, looks for an equally successful future. 122 Fine 70-68 K 1. hm? 11' my-ix' .Xbxff QFEILMMQT .z vii Iiiililihi ff-2: i N. f illfasggmxg vim Q iihifj. 1 X , Eff gmzulr 'frmizzmi the' H '-w new VQ., ff SMH 'flaw Vat' Nth! Last year's tennis team had an all -winning season, climaxed by Mears and Riley being runners-up in State High School doubles. Prospects for this year are just as bright, and the squad, led by last year's top five players, should rank among the best in the state. Q . 126 GOLF FRONT ROW: J. Winkelman, J. Hiller, S. The team as a whole has had a good deal of tournament playing experience so with high individual scores the squad should bring home some victories while an effective team is being built. 127 TRACK J.
