The basketball team is also supported by the band, since all home games are pepped up by the music of the K.H.S. pep band. QUEE MARILY BRADLEY STLIDE T BGARD DIRECTS COLLEGE ACTIVITIE The Student Board is composed of four officers and four members-at-large. Each officer and member is elected to his post through a college wide campaign and election. The president assumes office in the spring of the year. The other members take office in the fall. It is the duty of the Board to promote and regulate student activities and to be a responsible governing body for the students of the College under the powers granted by the administration. This year the student Board completed a busy year of well planned ac- tivities. The office of president was ably con- ducted by Ken Galleg The. success of the Student Board activities is an in- dication of the conscient- iousness with which he exercised the duties of his office. Dean McKinstry acted in an advisory capac- ity, but the President and Board assumed the re- sponsibilities involved in planning social activities and making decisions which affected the Student Body. A in l Standing: Jim Bauswell, Ken Galle, Jerry Krebill, Jackie Glasgow, Don Riley, Don Romes. Seated: Dean McKinstry, Rosemary Meierotto, Janet Kelly. Assisting President Galle this year was Jerry Krebill as vice-president, Janet Kelly as secretary, Jackie Glasgow - treasurer. The members-at-large were Rosemary Meierotto, Jim Bauswell, Don Riley and Don Romes. In keeping with the duties and powers of the Board as stated in the constitution of the Student Government Association, the Student Board granted permission for the formation of the Masquers, a dramatics group. Informality was the keynote of college social activities planned and sponsored by the Board. In September the Fall Frolic was held at Peters' Grove. This offered an opportunity for the incoming student to become better acquainted with his class- mates as well as the continuing students. In October a halloween masquerade was held in the cafeteria. The semi-formal Christmas dance was held on December 28. The theme this year was Club Holiday. This dance is the oldest traditional af- fair of the college, and as usual, it was well attended. It was an opportunity for friends and classmates who have moved away to visit with K.C.C. students and faculty members. After a successful homecoming on January 31 during which Queen Marilyn Bradley reigned, the Board turned its attention to planning the an- nual All-College Picnic at Carthage Lake and the Sophomore Banquet. This brought to a close another year of activity for the Student Board. rn' Front Row Left to right Mr Duane Blesz dlI'LLtOl J Glasgow, B. Peterson, M. Holland, S. Thirteen staff members combine their ef- forts to produce THE COMET'S TALE every two weeks. The paper began its second year of publication with a brave, new masthead and new make-up. The paper tries to fill the needs of its reading public, the student body of KCC. The Tale was instrumental in sparking the move to redecorate the student loungeg it has also made a concerted effort to urge students to attend college sports and social activities. On October 12, Editor LaVerne West and Business Manager Carole Vermillion attended the first meeting of the Iowa College Newspaper Conference in Iowa City. SCARLET The goal of the staff of this 1958 edition of the SCARLET was to produce a book that tells the story of this year at Community College. This year saw more progress in pro- ducing an individual yearbook for the college. After several weeks of debating over a name, the staff selected SCARLET, discarding contenders for the title such as Puc-e-she-tuc, Kee-shuth, and Mus-kemo-ta. The constant pressure of deadlines, re- visions, and interruptions taxed the staff. Finally in March the last pages left the tired and loving hands of the staff and were de- livered to the printer in Hannibal. For the staff this climaxed several months of cuttin arranging and pasting pictures and captions. Top right: Carole Vermillion checks the dictionary to keep Ken Galle on the right track. Community College entertained the future teachers of several of the surrounding high schools in the tri- state area. Each member of the college group acted as host or hostess to the guests. Lou Schmadeke's Komets accomplished the biggest feat in K.C.C.'s history, winning the state crown. The Komets also finished in a first place tie with Muscatine and Moline in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Selected for the all-conference first team were Don Romes, Ken Galle and Gene Weber. Jerry Krebill, Danny Staggs and Marvin Doyle were placed on the second team. The Komet cagers ended the season with a 12-1 record in Iowa competition. Don Romes and Gene Weber were placed on the first all-state team. Ken Galle was selected on the second team. A Sargon David Mr. Sargon David spoke to K.C.C. students at an all college assembly on November 12. Mr. David's lecture covered the troubled areas of the Middle East. He is a native of Iraq, and his first hand knowledge of his material made his topic both authoritative and very interesting. Later that morning he answered questions put to him by the World Affairs class. Mr. David is in the United States on a student' visa. He attended Lincoln Junior College, Lin- coln, Illinois. At the present he is attending Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri. . on M Rowland Myer s At an all college assembly on December 10, the K.C.C. student body heard Dr. Rowland M. Myers speak on The Romance of Words. That morning Dr. Myers presented a series of or- dinary words and showed how they reflected the pa st history of man on this planet, his activities, his thoughts, his moments of confusion, his hopes and his fears. He told stories about the origins of words and revealed how they have been formed in the past and are actually being formed today. According to Dr. Myers, words are like coinsg the more they are used, the faster they wear down and change their form and meaning. He predicted that some day everyone in the world will speak the same tongue, using a universal language which will evolve from existing lan- guages. ,ms .n LM S i + Z v Q 1 CHHDIDHTES EUR DEGREE UE HSSUCIHEE IH HHTS x E 1 E EE 2 ei? 2 if :Fifi RICHARD BANGERT Montrose Pre-Engineering SHIRLEY BENTZINGER Donnellson Liberal Arts DONALD BOE Ft.
