Cooper, Thompson, Mann, Gibson, Graf, Guy, Boyer, Sommers. Q The Purple and White gave the Keokuk fans the most successful football season in years. Al- though they placed second in the Conference, it was the closest any team could come to a championship without actually winning it. The Chiefs opened the season with a rousing 31-0 victory over Wilson of Cedar Rapids. Al- though looking ragged, they were able to sneak by their first Conference rival, Mount Pleasant 13-12. Showing much improvement, the Chieftains invad- ed Fairfield and came home with a 12-0 victory. Before one of the largest crowds on record, the boys took their only defeat of the season at the hands of the Conference champions, Burlington 13-7. Keo- kuk led 7-6 until one minute sixteen seconds in the last quarter. It was only there, that superior depth and size wore the weary Chiefs down. Bouncing back in true championship style, they avenged last year's defeat, by beating Ottumwa 28- 21. Picking up steam as the season progressed, the Chiefs had little trouble downing Muscatine 14-O. Fort Madison, having one of its best teams in years was expected to give their arch rival a rough battle. When the final gun sounded, Keokuk won 37-6. Thirteen senior lettermen took off their suits for the last time after walloping the 1953 Cham- pions from Washington, 38-0. Several members of the Chiefs were given special recognition: Larry Graf and John Copeland were placed on the All- Conference first team, with Larry Graf gaining a berth on the All-State third team. Ronnie Staggs, Bruce Van Dever, and Eddie Bryant made the All Conference second team. Five members also made honorable mention: Roger Cooper, Ronnie Gibson, Walter Robinson, Larry Testman, and Larry Grif- fith. These boys will greatly missed on next year's squad since all but Roger Cooper are seniors. On the gridiron the little Chiefs achieved a record of five wins and two losses, with one tie game. Although this record was lower than Mr. Lockett and Mr. Peters were accustomed to, the team provided the fans with some impressive football during the season. The Keokuk Chiefs started the season with 12 straight victories, before dropping their first encounter with Muscatine 54-32. As the season continued, teams with in- experienced players began playing good ball, and the conference became much tough- er. After avenging last year's trouncing at Ft. Madison, the Chiefs went to Mt. Pleas- ant. The Panthers' fabulous Earl Nau paced his teammates past Keokuk with a record 48 points, 85-63. This record, however, was soon broken by Chieftain Larry Swift. who scored 50 points against Fairfield. A sensational 40 foot shot with 1 second left to play by Muscatine's Dick Ware caused the Chiefs to miss a tie for the conference Championship. The Chiefs ended in second place in the Little Six. Seniors graduating from the team are: john Cope- land, Bruce Van Dever, Eddie Bryant, Larry Griffith, and Bob Pearl. 1954- 1955 SCHEDULE Keokuk Opponents Keokuk Opponents 58 Bloomfield 40 84 Fairfield 66 76 Wayland 28 32 Muscatine 54 51 Davenport 37 61 Burlington 45 68 Bloomfield 48 66 Washington 36 63 Washington 41 50 Ottumwa 42 58 Ottumwa 52 63 Mt. Coach Lou Schmadeke shaped up a squad from five returning lettermen and a sound group of Freshmen, the first time he has had two classes to work with. Due to a new depth and one year's ex- perience, the Komets made some top teams do some hopping. Muscatine, lowa's conference leader and tournament winner, had their hands full on their own court against the Komets and edged a 69-67 victory. Hannibal-LaGrange, one of the nation's top junior colleges, defeated the Komets twice in close contests, at Keokuk and coming from behind in the second half to win 78-68 on their own court. If the Komets continue to produce from year to year as well as they did from the previous one to the present they may well become a power in the state. Born in 1953, the Keokulc Community College has shown consider- able growth in its first two years of operation. Growth is not measured alone in the number of students, the course offerings, the addition of faculty members and purchase of new equipment. These, of Course, are all important. But, the real growth may be measured in the most important part of any college-the students themselves. Growth is evi- dent in the mature leadership and serious purpose of the sophomores. It is found in the good fellow- ship in the lounge, the quality of scholarship, the way in which students say Yes, l'll do my part, the organizations which have developed with more to Y I , I ,Z 1 l i come, the spirit which prompts students to drive 500 miles to support their team in a tournament. It is found in the Classrooms, the corridors, College events -yes, even in the community in which the students live and in which some work at part-time jobs. Keokuk Community College is growing. Its future development will greatly depend upon this important aspect-its students. 1 as 'Rx . , A-sfvf' 731i- 1 fs5.'1 a 4, we M , fgmg, fi flfff-.
