Just as important as the building itself is that this new school is indicative of the progress of the people of Keokuk. This amazing transformation took place within the short period of seventeen months. In December of 1949, the voters of Keokuk approved a one and one-fourth million dollar bond issue and in 1951, bids were taken. In March, 1952, the work, which had been held back because of material shortages, was finally begun. One year later the cornerstone was laid. Through the fast and furious efforts of the construction company crews, the academic part of the school was completed in time for the opening of school in September, 1953. The field house was not completed, as had been expected, on January 1, 1954. The class of 1954 was very fortunate that the school was completed in time for them to spend one short year here.
