Just as important as the building itself is that this new school is indicative of the progress of the people of Keokuk. We, the students of KHS, sincerely ap- preciate the efforts of our administrators and mem- bers of the community for bringing to us the speedy realization of this new building which gives us a greater incentive to learn. ASSISTANTS Wayne Anderson Dale Underwood Diane Higby janyce Bell Diana johnson joan Foster jerry Durant Fred johnson Larry Griffith Doug Carrell Deanna Bloom Helen Venning Shirley Barker Alice Young Eleanor Engler Sally Murray A This amazing transformation took place within the short period of seventeen months. In December of 1949, the voters of Keokuk approved a one and one-fourth million dollar bond issue and in 1951, bids were taken. In March, 1952, the work, which had been held back because of material shortages, was finally begun. One year later the cornerstone was laid. Through the fast and furious efforts of the construction company crews, the academic part of the school was completed in time for the opening of school in September, 1953. The field house was not completed, as had been expected, on January 1, 1954. The class of 1954 was very fortunate that the school was completed in time for them to spend one short year here. STUDENT COUNCIL Row 3 Loring Daughters, Thorne, Van Dever, Prunty, Walter. Row 2: Mr, Stone, D. Staggs, Cooper R Staggs Dams Glasgow. Row 1: Dains, Owen, Landman, Engler, Logan, Alberts, Hechler. The Student Council is faced with two problems this year-the poor school spirit and dropouts. Three commissions were set up to discuss and try to solve these problems. They were: fly Living in a New Building Q23 Analysis of Student Activities and C35 Developing a Code of Student- School Relations. Problems discussed under Living in a New Building consisted of assemblies, noon schedule, transportation to school, library fourth hour, lockers, mud, beautifying grounds, and how to take care of the building. The Analysis of Student Activities was faced with the problem of dropouts and how many activities each dropout participated in. Letters were written to other schools in the Little Six to find out what kind and how many activities they have. The Code of Student-School Relations is centered around the follow- ing question: What should senior high students expect of themselves in proper attitudes and behaviors in classrooms, library or study hall, halls, campus, cafeteria, activities, and general school activities? Sets of questions and suggestions were made for each of the items. Although all of the problems have-n't been solved the commissions have worked hard in solving a few of them and giving suggestions towards solving others. janet Owen taking tickets at one of the dances. The Pep Squad consists of forty girls and a major from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes who are chosen on the basis of rhythm, posture, poise, character, and pep. They help to keep up school spirit at sports events and also furnish the half-time entertainment at foot- ball and basketball games. Under the direction of a head usher, these girls take care of the reserved seat sections at all the games. The Pep Squad also has the responsibility of keeping the roster of players' up-to-date on the name board in the gymnasiun This year, for the first time all the K. H. S. cheer- leaders were selected from this group. Tryouts are held each spring for the following year. To be eligible for membership, a girl must maintain passing grades in three academic subjects and a C grade in physical education. She must attend and be on time for every practice held for a given event. Three unexcused absences or tardinesses permanently eliminate her from the organization. The Torch Club is the local chapter of the National' Honor Society. The members who meet' the scholarship requirement are chosen by the faculty and their classmates on the basis of character, leadership, and service to the school. Membership in the Torch Club is con- sidered a top honor in Keokuk High School. The Torch Club holds an induction twice a year, usually giving the formal initiation serv- ice before the assembly. Last fall the service was given in the evening for parents and friends. Mr. Sidney Nolte is the club sponsor. Another activity is to run the checkstand at basketball games. The members purchased new coat and hat racks this year. These are very modern and convenient. This project results in a considerable fund of money, used for school needs or kept on hand. From the Torch Club, Comment staff mem- bers are selected. Seniors serve in the major editorial positions, beginning as juniors by assisting on the yearbook work. Torch Club member, Dianne Higby checks coats Four of the Comment staffers work on the yearbook. G.A.A. an Q Row 4: Jenkins, Parks, Deitrich, Engler, Petersen, Murray, Diamond, Arnold, Bunch. The fellows also do their part to keep up school spirit by wearing their letter sweaters and also by sponsoring an occasional pep assembly. DOW WOW The Pow-Wow is the school newspaper, issued every three weeks. The journalism class, first semester, taught by Miss Eunice Blackburn, prepared students to work on the paper or to learn about the field of creative writing. The editorial board was composed of five editors, the business manager, and the ad- viser. Sraff positions of importance usually require credit in journalism or previous ex- perience on the paper, Anyone in school, however, who wishes to be a reporter, may tryout for a job. This year the paper was sold on Fridays in the hall and not by subscription. Advertising is not permitted by the Keokuk School Board, and some money is obtained by selling candy after school and by raking a turn at the game concession stand. The college edited a page in rhe paper this year, which was in charge of Pat Parris, first semester, and Geneal Peterson, second semester. High school staff members were Helen Venning, make-up editor, Darlene Anton, business' manager, Janice Moore, assignment editor, Patricia Dose, copy editor, Larry jannings, sports editor, first semester. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Keokuk Chiefs started out the '55-'54 season with two non-conference wins before falling before Ottumwa, 60-44. For the next few conference games the Chiefs just couldn't seem to get going, and they suffered their worst defeat from Ft. Madison in years, 58-61 on january 5. Next they lost a thriller to Washington, 51-54, on free throws. The Chiefs then caught fire and downed all of their foes, including Ottumwa, 52-51, to avenge their earlier defeat, until they met Muscatine for the second time. The Muskies hit 44W to the Chiefs' 257, and Muscatine won by a score of 69-57. The next game was against Ft. Madison on February 9 at Keokuk. It was Keokuk's defensive play in the second half, particularly in the final quarter, that turned the trick, coupled with a torrid 44? shooting percentage. Ft. Madison, however turned in an outstanding 46fZ, for the night. At the end of the third quarter the score was tied at 49-all. When the final buzzer sounded, the score was 69-61 in favor of Keokuk. The Chiefs lose Roger Crowell, Dick Ptunty, Dick Loring and Gene Thorne Dick Prunty was on all-conference second team as a junior in 1953. Although this is not the best record that n Keokuk sophomore team has had, nothing can be denied this team. They were an aggressive squad and were all over the court and their opponents all the time. The team was paced by Don Romes, who was high point man for nearly every game. Wi 53 KOMETS 54 Paul Hoeferle, Dale Underwood, Tom Talbot, Clarence Skog, Lou Schmadeke, Jerry Donahue, Wayne Anderson, Roger Carlson. In its first year the Keokuk Community College decided to organize a basketball team. Hampered by a small enrollment and the absence of a sophomore class, the Komets put a team on the floor which steadily decreased in size but not in spirit. The team was composed of former high school and industrial league players, plus some with no previous experience. Under the leadership of Coach Lou Schmadeke, the team registered four league victories. The first of those was by a 17 point margin at the expense of Clinton at its homecoming. Twice Clarinda was edged by the Komets in close games. The Homecoming and Appreciation game on February 12, was a success when the Komets defeated the Clinton Huskers by 17 points. At Webster City in the Iowa Junior College Basket- ball Tournament, the Komets were defeated. They trailed by six points at the end of the half but superior height and reserve strength of the Trojans routed the seven-man squad. The opponent, Mason City became the state runner-up in 1954. Lettermen for the year were jerry Donahue, Tom Talbot, Dale Underwood, Roger Carlson, Paul Hoe- ferle, and Wayne Anderson, Others who played on the team during the season included joe Ette, Mike Fallon, and Clarence Skog. The Komets won four games and lost six in conference play.
