(Birmingham Southern) The prime justification for Kenyon's existence is the excellence of its academic program. This is a simple truth upon which I am sure we are all agreed; and yet it is very easy to lose sight of our common purpose in the day-to-day life of the College. Short-range, immediate concerns may not seem more important, but they do seem more urgent—election to the fraternity of our choice or to the office we desire in the student government; appointment to the coveted editorial post on a publication; selection as a starter on a varsity team; or perhaps merely the right girl's acceptance of our invitation to a Dance Weekend. A yearbook is, of necessity, devoted largely to these extras, for the academic program does not lend itself to pictorial variety. It is important then, to remind ourselves as we turn over these pages that the events recorded here would have neither reason nor being without the other, and larger, activity which brings us together: the pursuit of learning and (borrowing from the address given last year by David Riesman) of purpose. 16 F.
