STROTMAN WILLIAM FRANKLIN SUMMEROUR HUBERT CURTIS WILLIAMS THE CHAMPS The Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers, under the able guidance of Coach Wilson, climaxed one of their best seasons in the history of the school as they wrapped up their second straight Ken- tucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown by up-ending Centre college in the finals of the league tourney at Danville, 66-50. Wesleyan's successful defense of the loop title in the tourney produced three more wins for the Purple and White cagers and gave them a formidable 12-0 mark in the conference for the entire season's play. The Panthers closed their season in a blaze of glory at Owensboro, wallop- ing Centre, 114-71, in a post-season game. Three Panther regulars—Ed LeForge, Bill Har- rell, and Norman Christopher—were named to the all-K.].A.C. team after the finish of tourney play. MANLEY WHO'S WHO In American Colleges and Universities KENTUCKY WESLEYAN The Kentucky Wesleyan Singers hit the road annually for a tour of Kentucky schools and churches, representing our Alma Mater in a wonderful way. It takes work, and plenty of it, to turn out the type of music our Singers produce—but each and every. member forgets the drudgery of rehearsals past when the time comes to stand up and sing. It’s a big thrill for all concerned when we roll out the bus and tape the sign “Kentucky Wesleyan Sing- ers’ on the side. It’s a week of work, thrills, songs—all rolled up into one word—FUN. This year, Prof. Boyd Williams leads the Singers; though new, he has carved his niche on the campus in the realm of music. We'll never forget the first time in chapel when, in his beautiful tenor voice, Prof. Williams sang THE LORD’S PRAYER for us. We know, with a voice like that, Boyd Williams will do things for our Chorus this year. SINGERS QUARTET Under the direction of John T. Smith, Senior music major, the Quartet has per- formed for churches and civic clubs all over the state. We are proud of our “gold- en-voiced” boys as they sing spirituals, hymns, and popular numbers! The mem- bers are George Webb, Sam Clark, Gayle Kincaid, and Bob Clendenen. V OIGEFAIND PIAN@: STUDENTS .. Talent and more talent! That’s what we have in the music department. Many students take special voice lessons, and you can be sure they are called on to perform for churches, schools, clubs, and other occasions. Many take piano lessons from Mrs. Henley Moore McCready and represent the college in a grand fashion. Sy LIT2I LE 1 HOE AY Ree TO BE OR NOT TO BE a member of the Little Theater group is no problem for students—they all want to join. And under the direction of Miss Lena-Mae Scott, many have “trod the boards” of the Little Theater. We can never forget the one-act plav, “Many Happv Returns,” nor the major production at Christmas of Dickens’ “Christmas Carol.” Students and the town’s folk crowd into the theater to witness the fine productions that they have come to expect from Wes- leyan’s actors. Hats off to the actors, stage-hands, prompters, and all who have made productions possible. (Bullet) Wilson has made Kentucky Wesleyan, the smallest liberal arts college in the state, the proud owner of one of the best and most-feared little college teams along this section of the Ohio River valley. Coach Wilson, who gained his nickname while a standout performer with the Wesleyan teams of the 1930 era, is now in his seventh season at the helm of the Panther basketball fortunes, He has marked up an amazing record during those seven seasons. Midway of the season just past, Wesleyan’s record with present Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams since Wilson has been head cage tutor stood at 50 wins and only 7 70 setbacks. The Panthers annually cause trouble when they step out of their own league to do battle with such national court titans as Western State, and the Universities of Louisville and Cincinnati. “Bullet’s”’ last season when the Panthers carried home the K.I.A.C. championship. At this writing the Pur- ple team seems headed for another loop crown capable leadership was rewarded with a spotless league mark. Coach Wilson graduated from Wesleyan in 1931. In college he earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He was an All-State se- lection in basketball in 1929 and 1930 and was honorable mention on the AIl-S.I.A.A. cage team in 1929. “Bullet” started his coaching career at Miner- va High school in 1931, and six years later he moved to Clark County high in Winchester, He came to Wesleyan in 1943. Kentucky Wesleyan College is located in one of the nation’s top red-hot regions of basketball. The Panther school is situated in the Blue Grass section of Kentucky where boys start learning to dribble a basketball almost before they learn to walk. The Panthers of Coach ‘Bullet” Wilson add no little to the dazzling dribbling dervish of the area. Annually Wesleyan produces a court com- bination that fast breaks and shoots with a crowd-pleasing spirit. BASKETBALL This season the Purple and White quintet again performed in great style. Although Coach Wilson lost four valuable lettermen by gradua- tion from last year’s K.I.A.C. champions, the Panther mentor floored a team that at the mid- way point of the season had gained plaudits as the best five in the loop. Although not able to compete with some of the larger schools in securing player material, Wesleyan manages to attract some of the best of the lesser publicized high schoolers of the state to the campus. The performances of some of the Wesleyan stars in recent years has caused some of the coaches of the larger schools to sigh and say, “how did I miss that boy.” Headed by Guards Ed LeForge and Bill Har- rell, the Panthers racked up seven victories in their first ten starts of the season. At mid-season the Wesleyan conference record was unmarred, and the three defeats suffered were at the hands of Morehead State and the powerful University of Louisville and University of Cincinnati quin- tets. One of the sweetest first-half schedule wins of the Panthers this season was a 72-47 home- floor demolishing of Georgetown, Wesleyan’s top rival in the loop. The Wesleyan hoopsters scored other early season league wins over Union and Centre. Doing the bulk of the court work for the Panthers this season were Forwards Hilton (Bobo) Daniel and Clarence (Rusty) Shearer, All-K.I.A.C. center Norman Christopher, and Harrell and LeForge, Burnie Myers, a regular forward, was lost to the U.S. Air Force after the first seven games. Capable reserve roles were turned in by for- wards Allie Curtis and Bob Kerr, pivotman Dave Daniel, and guards Lou Westerfield and Dick Shaw. Freshman cagers showing well in practice and action included Mervil Phelps, Franklin Baulch, Don Karr, Dan Ferris, and Bob ‘Tomes. At mid-season, Harrell was pacing the Panther scoring with 173 points in 10 games. LeForge was second with 140 points in a like number of contests. Winning or losing, the Panther quintet al- ways has been a great credit to the college. The players possess a keen fighting spirit, and they are acclaimed everywhere for their fine sports- manship. The board is primarily concerned with intramural competition on the campus, and tournaments are held each fall for ten- nis, field hockey, and softball. Picnics and hikes are enjoyed, too. During the winter months activity takes place indoors, with badminton, volley ball, and ping-pong being the main events. With spring, swimming and archery are in focus, thus creating a well-rounded sports program for women. Under this intramural system, letters are awarded to participating girls on a point system. ie bed y Rhythm classes help the girls to develop poise, body grace, and rhythm. Wesleyan’s W.A.A. board is affiliated with the State association, W.R.A. These girls annually compete in various events at the Kentucky College’s Play Day.
