Since fhe college is proud of 'lhis anniversary, we feel 'lhal' il' is proper 'l'o incorporale lhe 'Fol- lowing hisiorical facis in 'rhis significanf issue of lhe Porphyrian. The charier for Kenluclcy Wesleyan College was oblained on January l2, l860, from 'lhe legislalure of Kenluclcy. The ouibrealc of fhe Civil War prevenled ihe school 'From being opened ai- once. Dr. Charles Taylor, A.M., M.D., D.D., af one lime a medical missionary in China, was 'lhe firsi presidenl' of +he new college when il' opened in regular session in l866. The +o+al number of siudenis +he firsl' year was nine+y, buf lhere were no graduales un+il I868, when Benjamin D. Besl' graduaied in lhe Bachelor of Science course of sludy. ln IS79, Professor D. W. Bafson, A.M., was elecled presidenl' wilh a 'faculiy consisling moslly of Alumni of ihe insiiluiion. ln l89O, during 'lhe second lerm of Presidenr Ba+son's presidency, 'ihe college was moved from Millersburg 'l'o Win- chesier, Keniuclcy. When 'lhe college came' io Winchesier, lhe old home of former Governor Clark near ihe preseni Winchesfer High School was firsl used for 'lhe college. Then an Adminislraiion Building was buill' on l'he preseni sife. On Feb- ruary 4, l905, fhe firsf Adminisiraiion Building was desfroyed by fire. The presenl building was begun and was in use al' +he Commencemenf of l906. Al' one fime 'lhe presenl' Science Building was used for an Academy connecied wilh fhe college.
