THE EMERGENCE OF ATHLETIC INNOVATION Athletics at Kentucky State College has begun its uprising toward a change-a change that will represent a Thorobred dynastyn in future years. This upheaval in athletics is presently being spearheaded by a quartet of dynamic head coaches who are guiding the reins toward victory after victory. Each jockey has made his commitment to open up around his turn to win the race for athletic prominence. In the winner's circle we have: Coach Charles Bates . . . Coach Lucias Mitchell . . . Coach Kenneth Gibson .... . . . Coach Robert D. Williams K DR. WILLIAM EXUM Athletic Director Coach Charles Bates is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He played college ball at Alabama A 8: M College. Bates earned his graduate degree at the University of Kentucky. While playing at Alabama A 81 M College, he made the S.I.A.C. team as a tackle. Bates has had professional football years with the Chicago Bears and the New York Titans. He served three years as defensive coach here and after a year at Southern University, he returned as Head Coach of the Kentucky State THORO- BREDS. Coach Lucias Mitchell is beginning his first year as coach of the Thorobreds,'5 and his fifth year as head coach of a college team. He received his undergraduate degree at Jackson State College where he earned four letters in basketball as a for- ward. Mitchell holds a Masteris Degree in Health and Safety from Indiana Uni- versity, and has done additional study at the same institution. Coach Kenneth Gibson is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of Indiana University where he also received his graduate degree. He served as head track coach at Florida A 81 M for two years where he won one S.I.A.C. champion- ship. Kentucky State College was his choice with seven years of coaching experience. Coach Robert Plug Williams is a native of Frankfort, Kentucky. He is a gradu- ate of Kentucky State College where he played football and earned a varsity letter in basketball. Williams earned his graduate degree from Indiana University. He is presently an active reserve with the United States Army where he holds the rank of Major. 48

1967 THOROBRED FOOTBALL SQUAD FOOTBALL The Thorobred Renaissance The 1967 Thorobred football squad, after a disappoint- ing finish in 1966, began its quest toward a new look. Under the able direction of ex-pro and new Head Coach Charles Bates, the Thorobreds began their move toward the top by compiling a season record of 5-3-1. The future promises to be even more exciting with the recruiting of strong fresh- men and a tough competitive schedule.
