Standing: Betty Scruggs, Catherine Brooks, Laverne lngolls, Margaret Phillips. History of Delta Sigma Theta Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded at Howard University January l3, 1913. Del- ta founders envisioned an organization which would lift the race through combating ignor- ance, preiudice, discrimination, and injustice, and bring together college women of like ideals, scholarship, and potentialities. On such principles was Delta Sigma Theta founded. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is recorded in Washington, C. D., as the first incorporated So- rority. Grand Chapter Scholarships awards amount to 55,000 annually and are not limited to Delta women. The maior activities are Founders Day, The Jabloerwock, National May Week, and Job Opportunities. -80-

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was founded January 5, 1911 at indiana University, Bloom- ington, Indiana, being incorporated by the State of Indiana on April 15, 1911. lt was first known as the Kappa Alpha Nu Fraternity. In 1941 the name was changed to,Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The efforts of three men, Elder W. Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong, and John M. Lee, were outstanding in the early development of the Fraternity. The Fraternity aims at the highest achievement in scholarship, manly development of its members, and the general improvement of college. i -82-
