HISTORY OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORGRITY On .lanuary T6, l908, a group at Howard University caught the inspiration ot a fellow student, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, and initiated the movement of Greek letter sororities among Negro women in America. Now interracial, Alpha Kappa Alpha has initiated more than 25,000 women and has T04 graduate chapters and l6l undergraduates. The sorority's pro- iects include the Americn Council on Human Rights, Foreign Fellowships and undergraduate Scholarships, National Building and Chapter Houses and Research and Local Community Programs. The purpose of the Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, improve the social stature of the race, promote unity and friendship among col- lege women, and keep alive within the alumnae an interest in college lite. Standing: Betty Scruggs, Catherine Brooks, Laverne lngolls, Margaret Phillips. History of Delta Sigma Theta Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded at Howard University January l3, 1913. Del- ta founders envisioned an organization which would lift the race through combating ignor- ance, preiudice, discrimination, and injustice, and bring together college women of like ideals, scholarship, and potentialities. On such principles was Delta Sigma Theta founded. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is recorded in Washington, C. D., as the first incorporated So- rority. Grand Chapter Scholarships awards amount to 55,000 annually and are not limited to Delta women. The maior activities are Founders Day, The Jabloerwock, National May Week, and Job Opportunities. -80-
