LE LIT DOM 5 She JS Prluck y Ss, fd Nor —— for the Alind 1984-1985 Yfarbook Alice McDonald, Superintendent of Public Instruction Kentucky Department of Education Lois Adams, Associate Superintendent Office of Education for Exceptional Children Will D. Evans, Superintendent Kentucky School for the Blind KENTUCKY SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND ADVISORY BOARD Bill Roby James Clifford Sheila Sorrell Adam Ruschival Edward P. Berla Ph.D. Philosophy We, the staff of The Kentucky School for the Blind, base our school program and services on the philosophy expressed in the following beliefs: WE BELIEVE: that every person has dignity, is of worth, and is entitled to respect as an unique being. every person should be given the opportunity to realize his her potential and that the school has the responsibility of providing experiences that will encourage him her to do so. that those basic skills and knowledges needed to function productively in our society are essential to each student and that it is the school's function to introduce and nurture those skills and knowledges. that every student should be equipped with a knowledge the adaptive skills needed to compensate for his her handicap. effects of blindness must be recognized by all staff members and reflected in the total programming. each student needs to understand and practice the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship living in a democratic society. awareness and appreciation of the fine arts, leisure skills, and other activities which enrich @hiae are necessary to the student's optimal development. the staff must assist in the development of self-esteem by instilling in students who are blind or visually handicapped an attitude of independence and confidence. awareness and appreciation of individual differences are beneficial toward becoming a contributing member of society. that this school has primary responsibility for the education of the students enrolled here, but a share of that responsibility lies with the family, the community, and other social institutions. that the philosophy of education must be constantly reevaluated to meet the changing needs of children as they face a very complex society. 2 (Sra iness WILL D.
