Evans, Superintendent KENTUCKY SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND ADVISORY BOARD Bill Roby James Clifford Bessie Cobb Adam Ruschival Edwardeare spec lareri:D- Seen tion CAROL FREY We dedicate the 1983-84 edition of VISIONS to Mrs. Carol Frey, former librarian at The Kentucky School for the Blind. Following a period of volunteer service, Mrs. Frey was employed as librarian in September, 1963, and served in that capacity until her untimely death on June 17, 1983. Her contributions to our library were innumerable; her commitment to our students and staff was tireless. She was never too busy to help anyone of us - student or teacher looking for a particular book. Her enthusiasm for and love of reading was contagious. Her encouragement of crafts and needlework for leisure pastimes was appreciated by all of us. With gratitude and affection, we remember Mrs. Carol Frey, a special friend of The Kentucky School for the Blind. P Lilosophy 62 ELIE Wee ther statf or The Kentucky School for ‘the Blind, base our school program and services on the philosophy expressed in the following beliefs: WE BELIEVE: oe that every person has dignity, is of worth, and is entitled to respect as an unique being. tees: that every person should be given the opportunity to realize his her potential and that the school has the responsibility of providing experiences that will encourage him her to do so. were. that those basic skills and knowledges needed to function productively in our society are essential to each student and Baaeeit) is the school's function to introduce and nurture those skills and knowledges. laters that every student should be equipped with a knowledge of the adaptive skills needed to compensate for his her handicap. sesern ets that the effects of blindness must be recognized by all staff members and reflected in the total programming. Shee that each student needs to understand and practice the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship living in a democratic society. oS that awareness and appreciation of the fine arts, leisure skills, and other activities which enrich life are necessary to the student's optimal development. oe that the staff must assist in the development of self-esteem by instilling in students who are blind or visually handicapped an attitude of independence and confidence. ees that awareness and appreciation of individual differences are beneficial toward becoming a contributing member of society. eee. that this school has primary responsibility for the education of the students enrolled here, but a share of that responsibility lies with the family, the community, and other social institutions. ee: that the philosophy of education must be constantly reevaluated to meet the changing needs of children as they face a very complex society. 6S LE SEE EE 3 2 Ax 8iyprt 82 ex Yoo ass S dus ness LtCce . ose @ 03 7a Le x WILL D.
