He was a pioneer in the development of orientation and mobility for blinded veterans during World War II and brought these valuable skills to the students at the school. He recognized the importance of resi- dential programming and its’ relationship to the total educational process. In addition to fulfilling his duties at The Kentuams School for the Blind, he always found time to serve his church and various civic and professional organizations. The new dormitory building 1s dedicated in honor of Mra boPs Howser: M. BLYE ALLAN Years of Service 1907-1951 Miss Allan is remembered for her imaginative teaching in addi- tion to her special work in dramatics and assistance to students who attended classes in local public’ schools. As a field worker, she was often the first contact prospective students and their families had with The Kentucky School for the Blind. Her enthusiasm and love for The Kentucky School for the Blind created the confidence which families needed to be comfortable in sending their children to a school away from home. Two dormitory living units in Howser Hall are dedicated in honor of Miss B. Blye Allan. SUSAN BUCKINGHAM MERWIN Years of Service 1895-1923 As teacher and superintendent, Miss Merwin's efforts were un- BrCinge In addition to her interest in academic pursuits, she sought opportunities to enrich the cultural growth of the students. In 1916, she was instrumental in changing the name of the school to The Kentucky School for the Blind. She introduced Standard English Braille and phased out New York Point which had been used for many years. Two dormitory living units in Howser Hall are dedicated in honor of Miss Susan Buckingham Merwin. TRAUB Years of Service 1930-1963 S Mrs. Traub's enjoyment of life influenced her work with stu- dents and their families. Her classroom was warm and inviting and was filled with hand-made materials which enhanced the success of her students. She was known and respected nationally for her work with blind children. Two dormitory living units in Howser Hall are dedicated in honor of Mrs. Margaret S. Traub. MARY OPAL KEITH Years of Service 1962-1977 Mrs. Keith's work as school nurse and field worker brought her into close contact with the students and their families. Her friendly and sincere manner’ instilled confidence andetnusts, ihe established good relationships with others in the health profes- sions to the benefit of The Kentucky School for the Blind students. The Health Center in Howser Hall is dedicated in honor of Mrs. Mary Opal Keith. SRBLGRIKE ORB ERBEKE DOROTHY HARTFORD Years of Service 1941-1946 1948-1972 As dietitian, Miss Hartford made a_ special effort to know the students and their families. She was aware of the individual traits and interests of each child, and her cheerful comments made her a special person to know. Miss Hartford was concerned with proper nutrition and could plan everything from a picnic to a banquet with perfect taste. The Food Service Building is named in honor of Miss Dorothy Hartford. LYDIA A. SCOGGAN Years of Service 1905-1952 Missmbydiaweserved as teacher and principal for forty-seven years. The emphasis which she placed on academic excellence and the importance of Braille earned the respect of her colleagues and had a lasting effect on the lives of students with whom she worked. Her dignity and kindness were examples to everyone. The Classroom Building is named in honor of Miss Lydia A. Scoggan. Oss SE AD Sams Re Years of Service 1914-1960 As music instructor, Mr. Eads was able to discover and develop talents in the students with whom he worked. His endearing and gentle qualities inspired love and respect by stud ents and co-work- ers. The band room in the Richie Building is named in honor of ei: UES mbads. 5. PEARL ROE COCHRAN e Years of Service 1931-1958 : Miss Pearl's work in the Housekeeping Department and as wait- ress placed her in contact with many students throughout the day. Those whose lives she touched remember her especially for her gentleness, kindness and cheerful disposition.
