Here and There Sergeant Quade had been lecturing his first-year class for a whole hour on The Duties of a Soldier, and he thought it was now time for him to test the results of his discourse. Casting his eyes around the room, he finally decided on Private Mosher as his first victim. Private Mosher, he asked, why should a soldier be ready to die for his country? The rookie scratched his head for a while, then an ingratiating and enlightening smile flitted across his face. Sure, Sergeant, he asked, pleasantly, you're quite right. Why should he?
