As juniors gay they stepped along, With joy their way was pavedg Mid-years they conquered with a song, In triumph their colors waved. ln basketball they won their Dame, And helped the Odd's cause, For the Endowment Fund they pledged rh With a spirit that did not pause. Ask Birdie is a byword at K. C. W. Theres nothing she's unable to find, no situation she's unable to meet. We don't see how this old place could go on with- out her. Her shoulders are squared to all responsibilities, even if she does get reck- less sometimes and experiment with cow- bells. etc. Birdie is an all-round girl, and is especially distinguished as being the first member of the K Club. A hard worker, a jolly schoolmate, a loyal friend, Birdie is sure to make her mark in this big world. EVELYN WOODFORD BATES Louisville, Ky. Vice-President of Y. W, C. Blessed with a bright mind and attractive personality, she soon became the faculty pet of l9l9. Evelyn is a remarkably graceful dancer and possesses a great deal of dramatic talent. Though it's hard to predict her future, we are sure that suc- cess awaits her behind the footlights. '21g Business Manager ot' Ath- letic Association: Cast of the Senior Play, '21, A smile for all, a welcome glad, Axfovial coaxing may she had. Was there ever a jollier pal or better sport than our Virge? She wears a broad smile for every occasion, and her antics soon bring smiles to other people's flaces, too. She has chosen expression for her major subject and bids fair to being very successful in it. She starred in last year's june play, and in Quality Street and on other occasions her talent has been demonstrated. However, we fail to see Virgaleen behind the footlights. More likely behind a cookstove in a neat little kitchen-and not such a little kitchen either, or it won't hold Virge. Page nineteen :Bef .1 REBECCA BREVARD Murfreesboro, Tenn. Roses ramble o'er her cheeks, Sunlight has kissed her hair. Having survived the rigors of French B and French IV, to say nothing of physics and chemistry, Rebecca is surely well pre- pared to meet the hardships of life. She is full of fun and seldom worries over anything longg but it's safer to keep away if she is worried. She is prominent in athletics, especially basketball, and takes part wherever she is needed in any activ- ity. Being a ministers daughter, she may spend part of her future helping her fa- ther pay parochial visits, but we feel safe in saying that she won't spend all her days in this way. Ellen possesses decided vocal talent and is song leader of the class and of the school. She has dramatic ability, which has led her to make expression her major subject. She held prominent parts in the June play and in the senior play acquitted herself with fame. She plays basketball and swims as well, and dances beautifully. We are not so well acquainted with Mar- jorie, as she came to us only this year, but it can be safely said that she is one of the most charming members of her class. If she undertakes a thing she is sure to back it to the end, and she is far from being a slaclcer when it comes to bright ideas. Marjorie is a musician of no little ability, and who could fail to get pep at the sound of her wonderful jazzn? She also plays basketball and taltes an active part in all school activi- ties. She is a good conversationalist and is blessed with a keen sense of humor. Never will we forget her famous point- less jokes, or her ability to tell them. School life is a song for Brummal, for she surely has a way with her and can't be beat when it comes to putting it over. She is possessed of a mixture of' wit and wisdom rarely found in the same person. She has executive ability and leadership, which has made her prominent in all school activities. She excels in dramatics and starred especially in the senior play. When other things fail to interest, K. C. W. has always Brummal's love affairs to fall back on, and each one seems more hopeless than the last, We see her trip- ping through life without a backward glance, always a social favorite and suc- cessful in whatever she undertakes. NELLIE MARGARET LAWRENCE Danville, Ky. All things come to him who waits. Therefore why should I hurry? During lVlargaret's frequent visits to school we have had but slight opportunity to know her. Always quiet and reserved, she puts the noisy chatter of the English class to shame-when she gets there in time. She must be very modest, for it took the entire annual staff, plus the rest of the seniors and Miss Lilly, to prevail upon her to have her picture made for the annual. Having the temperamental dis- position that belongs to talented people, she is always either in the heights of joy or the depths of gloom. She has a never- failing faculty for managing her instruc- torsg in fact, about the only thing she can't manage is her own love affairs. She has demonstrated her histrionic ability upon several occasions, and the stories evolved by her fertile imagination have been a joy to the English class. So, al- though her ideal life may be to dance all night and sleep all day, fate decrees an even better future for her genius. I-u-:nn DAISY FLORENCE MCLIN Hazel Green, Ky. Work is my recreation: a delight like that which a bird feels in Hyingf' Well, hey-diddle, somebody must be re- sponsible for thisg we aren't accomplish- ing a thingfi Such is the theme of Daisy's existence, and she usually ends by being responsible for it herself, and certain it is that she accomplishes much and in more ways than one. ln spite of her saint-like disposition, her naughty brown eyes and curling lashes have wounded more than one hero and even placed a few on the casualty list. lt's not a bit hard to pre- dict Daisy's future. A little home in her own mountains, maybe, where her genius for homemalcing will surely blossom forth and where her lo-e for social work will malce her the center of her community. For two long years now she has been Miss Milroy's special pet. lndeed, the rest of us are quite jealous of the attention shown her. Allene has been prominent in clramatics and as a member of the Honor Board. Faithful to duty and loyal, too, she is one to be trusted with many things. To most people Caroline is a dignified senior, but to those who really know her she is a jolly good pal, with a cloak of dignity to be assumed on occasions. Life for her would be a song were it not for the time she spends in vain effort trying to please a certain member of the faculty who is cruelly unappreciative. So closely linked are the careers of Edelen and Noel that it is impossible to mention one with- out the other. C. W. Notes fSenior Prep Class of Twenty-onelf' It had been a number 1 of years since l had left K. C. W., but, having occasionally kept clippings of my old classmates, l decided to spend the morning reviewing what had happened since we parted on graduation day. On the very first page was a newspaper clipping which ran: Miss Marvin Ray, of Shelbyville, Ky. fand Marvin was our dear presidentj, makes her first flight around the world, leaving New York July 5, l926, and returning July ll, a world-breaking record. We regret to say, however, that her career is not likely to continue long on account of her fondness for royalty. The next thing was a picture of Miss Sara Cardwell, under which was written: Ziegfeld's Leading Lady. She is taking the leading part in Southern Seas, which is now being s'aged for the first time in New York. l turned a page and a picture of Norma Talmadge, or so l thought, fell out: but, on looking closer, l saw it was our classmate, Gladys. Bridges. On the back was written: Country amazed. The real Talmadge has been dead for three years, and Miss Gladys Bridges, of Kentucky, has gone on with her work. A penciled note read: Anna Fox married the owner of her Buick and now lives in Lexington. She is noted for her receptions and dinners. Ruth Thompson is athletic instructor oft Oberlin University, and her fame is widespread. Each year at the athletic tournaments all over the country Ruth carries away the laurels. A newspaper clipping was next marked with red lines: Miss Evelyn Coleman, after a very bril- liant season at Newport, is to be married to the youngest foreign minister of the United States. The announcement is a very great surprise to all her friends, as Miss Coleman has spent the last two years as a dancing teacher of the select class of the East, and was making a great success. ln the same paper clipping was a stunning picture of Helen Todd in a bathing suit and holding a contest cup, under which was written: Beautiful Louisville girl swims the Gulf of Mexico and wins the cup given by International Association of Swimmers. There was a long account of her skill and speed, and also a mention of her as a theatrical dancer. The next were two clippings from a musical magazine: Paris, France, June l7, l925.-Mme. Class History :QP v it- N September, l9l8, we entered the doors of K. C. W. with a look on our faces that would have made a timid ul rw person look bold. What was before us? We soon found out, and there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth when we learned by experience the awful trials of being freshmen. But after Christmas we gained a little confidence and elected Louise Nichols, class presidentg Betty Ireys, vice-president: Alice Montgomery, treasurerg and Miss Dorothy Welliver, class teacher. In 1919 a few of us came back, sophisticated sophomores, and started to work with more determination than we had shown the year before. We elected Mary Lawless Gatewood, president: Elizabeth Walker, vice-presfdentg Sarah E. Johnson, secretary-treasurerg and Miss Welliver, class teacher. We entered the interclass rivalry contest with a great deal of vim, but the upperclassmen proved to be stronger than we. We, being very sophisticated, took it as a matter of course, but deep down in our hearts we made a resolution to do better next year. l9Z0! Juniors! Almost at the top of the ladder. A few of the old girls came back, and those who did not come were replaced by new girls. Since Miss Welliver did not return, we unanimoujly elected Miss Fell class teacher, and with her help we hope to make a record equalled by no other class. f.f HW ,g ' I I'1 . f 5 wif' f-L I . . Can you realize it has been almost ten U93 years since our class was together? Danville has grown so you would hardly know it. They even have a porter to take your baggage at the train. When I arrived, who should step up and take my bag but Virginia Baker, in the uniform of a red-cap porter. She told me that Erma Woodard had a truck farm in Texas and is raising cain.', Elizabeth Marston left last week as a missionary to Siam. Sara Shelby married a Presbyterian minister. I didn't catch his last name, but his first was Douglass. As I went on up town a large sign caught my eye. It bore in blazing letters: Mademoiselle Lillian Hart, Instructor in Dancing. Another just above it read: Lawyer-Gladys Centerg Divorce Cases a Specialty. On my way to K. C. W. my attention was attracted by a large crowd on the corner of the Shop Perfect. Much to my amazement I saw Elizabeth King standing on a soap box delivering an oration in the interest of the Salvation Army. She was screaming at the top of her voice. I started, only to be stopped again, this time by a billboard in front of Stout's Theater. It read: Mademoiselle Fleecia Robinsonelle, Noted Toe Dancer, Here Tonight and Tomorrow Only. Next: The Famous Moss Sisters, Ruby and Bessie, will appear in 'The Heavenly Twins'. When I arrived at K. C. W., who should I see coming from the hospital but Rose Lee with an English book under her arm. She told me she had taken Miss Flynn's place as English teacher. I found afterwards that her pupils liked her very much, because she rarely appeared on the scene. On going in, I found that Cecil Byrley was now dean, with Frances Steinberger as her assistant. You would be surprised at the order they keep. They told me that Ernestine Kemper is married and living with her little family in Seattle, Wash. Lela Stona Wakeheld is the Centre College widow and still as gay as of old. Scandal, my dear! Mary Walker is divorced again. This must be the fourth time. When I picked up The Evening Post I saw Martha Allen's picture. She has been elected captain of the life guards at Atlantic City. Do you still find teaching history at Smith entertaining? Have you heard from Miss Tomlinson lately? I suppose you are still keeping up with her. I had to give up nursing on account of mother's illness and am now staying at home. I am sending you a copy of Marie Beckner's new book, Speaking of Angels. Affectionately, MARY CROMWELL. Each year the membership has increased: in fact, X,-X we have solicited the greatest of interest and support from our friends at QC sw 5:1 Kiki A B '. 1' k.. A -S3 ' t 9 Centre. The athletic season opened with much enthusiasm for the many interesting phases of sport life it offered. The interclass contests, which began immediately after the election of officers, differed slightly from last year. A K Club was organized, which provided that each girl passing any three of the five sport contests would become a member. The first fall sport was swimming, the pool being patronized by all. As the days became cooler every morning stepping along that much gain the girls preferred that enjoyable outdoor sport-hiking. Practically and afternoon found all pikes leading from Danville dotted with girls, with much vim and enthusiasm, for each milestone they passed was just for their class record. When the cold winter days came no one dared to venture out on the highways, our ever-bubbling over pep was turned to basketball. The season was a most interesting one. Our class games were the first and the senior preps won the much-prized champion- ship. What would our basketball season be if it were not for the good old games played by the Reds and Blacks? How those snake dances, songs, cheers, and those mascots so significantly costumed spur the players on to a glorious victory. The first of these games occurred February 26, the score being 8 to 7 in favor of the Reds. One week later the Reds were victors for a second time, the score being 3 to l l. The third and last game was played March ll, and the Reds carried away the laurels. Even though the Blacks didn't win, they fought hard, and their many good plays did not go unnoticed. Everyone is looking forward to tennis and baseball, for K. C. W. may Well boast of some of her excellent players. Judging from the most enjoyable athletic banquet of l920, we may be assured that this momentous occasion may even be surpassed by the Athletic Association of l92l. C. W. girl who is the possessor of the golden Old English K can well be proud, for to earn this beautiful letter is not an easy task. To win this prize awarded by the Athletic Association a girl must earn three K's, which are obtained through proficiency in at least three different sports. K and numerals are given in swimming, hiking, tennis, basketball and baseball. The K is given to any girl who plays at least five halves of the match games in basketball, three-fourths of the total number of innings played in baseball, to the two girls who play in the tennis finals, to all who pass the advanced swimming test, and to all who complete one hundred and seventy-five miles in hiking. The class numeral is granted to all those who play at least live halves of the class games in basketball, one-half of the total number of innings played in baseball, to the class champion in tennis, to those who pass the Hrst swimmmfr test and to all who complete one hundred and twenty-eight miles in hiking. Although the club was just organized in the fall of the year, one girl has already won her three Ks Mary Carlisle Bird, having earned a K in basketball, hiking and swimming, has the distinction and honor of being the first member of this athletic club. But by the close of the baseball season many more will have won the necessary K's and the club will be a truly active body of girls. Such an organization is a great asset to the student life, for not only does it stand for good sports manship and interest in women's athletics, but for one worth-while thing in life as well. The awes and thrills of the girls from the time they entered li! the walls of K. C. W. last September over the expectation of this wondrous event came to a most brilliant climax on the evening of October 2. On entering the beautifully decorated and dimly candle-lighted reception halls of K. C. W., the girls, simply dressed in their organdies and summer frocks, found them- selves immediately besieged by the entertainment co-mmittee and the ycung men of Centre. Delicious refreshments were served by the members of the Junior Prep Class, and when the fateful hour of departure came it was with great reluctance that K. C. W. bade Centre good-night. HE annual reception given by the Y. W. C. A. for the new girls lr J Y. M. C. A. Reception One of the most pleasant events of the social calendar this year was the Y. M. C. A. reception given by the young men of Centre for the K. C. W. girls. This event has always been one of pleasure, but this year the entertainment in the halls of old Centre of K. C. After a half hour of bumping merrily over country roads we reached our destination, Mr. Logan Caldwell's attractive clubhouse on the Dix River. Of course, there was a wild rush for beds on the porch, and then every- one settled down to having a good time. We explored to our hearts' content until the supper bell rang, when we all flocked in to a bountiful and delicious meal prepared by Aunt Vicey. There were only five or six callers that night and the evening passed uneventfully, except that Doggy Walden tried to drown himself at Rebecca Brevard's feet. Daisy took her never-to-be-forgotten canoe ride. But Sunday morning just simply capped the climax. Almost all of Centre College came out Sunday morning, bringing ice cream and watermelons with them. Of course, they stayed to help eat it, and after that they spent not only the afternoon with us, but we had to share our supper with them-and then they stayed a little while for politeness sake. In the evening we wandered off to the dam in couples, or paddled the canoes up and down the moonlit river, or just sat on the porch and listened to lVlary's Texas song- bird, who sang for our entertainment. When Monday morning came it was a tired but happy crowd of girls who scrambled upon the truck with all their baggage. Lawdy, Lawdy! Senior Camp! l-low you chased away those homesick blues. In the spring of I9I9 a campaign was put on in Danville for new members, andgrg that time the organization has continued to grow, until now it has about three hundred enthusiastic active members. At the June meeting Miss Amelia Yerkes was elected presidentg Miss Mary Mae Walker, vice-president: Mrs. F rank Taylor, second vice-president: Miss Amanda Rodes, secretaryg Mrs. Harry Bosley, treasurerg and Miss Mary McDowell, publicity agent. The alumnae banquet this year was the largest, most enthusiastic one that has ever been held. The classes holding reunions had a large representation of out-of-town members, and every member present pledged anew her loyalty and devotion to her Alma Mater. In July the members of the Executive Board gave two delightful teas in the alumnae room of West Hall for the visiting alumnae. This room was furnished last year by the Alumnae Association, to be used as a reception room by the faculty and student bady. This year funds have been raised to furnish a guest room in Morgan Hall. The room will be furnished whenever it is turned over by the college to the Alumnae Association. Local chapters of the Alumnae Association have been formed in Kansas City and Independence. Mrs. James Welsh, of Oxford, is one of the most enthusiastic members of this chapter. l X Ufuj Aw I. 1 L- 2 . E? Th D iw, : Q MF' ' e arsy, Nineteen Twenty-One 1-1'-I.. Later, it was made much more diflicult, and is now used for the punishment of innocent youths in the toils of school teach- ers. In this most interesting study the poor, deluded victim takes a poor, innocent triangle, dissects it, analyzes it, takes it apart, delves into its past, present and future, lays bare the scandals of its life, and the crimes of its ancestors. And in the end, when the last episode of pitiful life and daily actions has been reached, the student knows no more than when she be- gan, but because she has accumulated a mass of figures, she imagines she has proved what she was searching for, the teacher lets it go, because she really knows no more than the student. ' f 1axxx29 T. - r.' .-7 okes No one knows what Trig really is, ex- cept the man who invented it, and he has passed away to a warmer climate, and as punishment for his sins, we hope, is roast- ing merrily in the lowest pit of the lowest part of the lower regions known as Hades and is being fed red-hot triangles to punish him for his misdeeds in life.-MATH V. 55 56 55 ADVICE TO JOKE EDITOR OF NEXT YEAR First: Don't take the job at all. Second: Employ a company of ste- nogs. Third: Have all the contributions written on tissue paper so that the edtior can see through them.
