CLASS HISTORY September 18 1945 Today was the opemng day of a new year at Kents Hxll and I found that I was not the only bewxldered and homeslck vlctlm of thls new campus hfe No Mr Barnes was a newcomer also and an lnsplratlon to all of the young reshmen who were m hls Algebra I class And then of course there was twelve r old Jan Caldwell slightly plump and already trymg to w1n the boys wlth her fllrtmg femmme smlle But she was to flnd that all was 1n va1n for the competl tnon of her upper classmates w as too much for her September 19 1945 Tomght we had clubroom for the flrst time and lt certamly was a quamt experlence for the young freshmen xn the group We found that studles are not to occupy all our thoughts here at Ixents Hlll There seem to be other falrer worlds to conquer January 28 1946 We had our flrst m1dyear examlnatlons today Or should I say thev had us? W e lnevperlenced newcomers to the ordeal crammed for hours memorlzmg ew ery detail trylng to learn enough to wrlte for two hours on one sub yect All the whlle we were looklng forward to the W mter Carnival hopmg that we would dxstxngulsh ourselves ln that fleld at least June 9 1946 Today was graduatlon day After strugghng through a week of fmal exams we were ushered out of our flrst year on the hlll wlth verv lmpressn e commencement exercxses as a flnale These exerclses gave us a demonstratlon of what we are worklng for Marne Hopklns won the award for the hlghest average ln the freshman dlvlslon September 17 1946 We returned to the hllltop today to start our sophomore year and found that the dark brown entrance hall of Bearce had taken on new statell ness and the classrooms presented more cheerful aspect rn thelr new dress of pastels Flourescent llghtlng had been mstalled We also found a new hockey rlnk w here Mr Swett s team wlll wrlte another excltlng chapter ln Kents I-Illl sports hlstory September 24 We have been attending classes for about a week now We w ere quite confldent of ourselves a week ago but Mlss Choate our Enghsh teacher has somewhat deflated our egos by constantly remlndxng us that the llteral translatlon of sophomore IS a wlse fool November 18 It seems to me that ex erywhere I we gone today I ve heard stud mormng brew of the dmmg roornl This IS the theme song of the new est addltlon to the Kents Hull projects Coffee Tlme Muslcale which ls broadcasting the name and fame of Kents Hull students not to mentlon msyterlous alluslons to the facultv January 16 1947 Tomght some of us were mvlted to the Dunn s house for a birthday party bemg glven for one of the students Thls IS the newest of the Kents Hlll tradltlons Mr Dunn s Jovlal hospltallty was rn aled only bv Mrs Dunn s dellclous cake hlay 17 Tomght we were thrllled with a heartwarmmg performance of Our Town a play by Thornton Wllder put on under the able dlrectlon of Miss Y 111811 Russell The cast clld a magnificent Job of actmg C onme Barr and Duck Hartman expressed the Joys and sorrows of all of us The members of our class who partxcl pated ln the play were Ann Graves Carolyn Place and Cynthia Cleveland June 8 It seems xmposslble that another graduatlon day has come and gone but xt s true' Our class was agaln not to be left out ln the graduatlon everclses Marle Hopklns was rewarded for attalnmg the hlghest average ln the sophomore class and John Hamllton and Ivan W ltham received the Paul Prize for keeping the most orderlv room throughout the vear September 16 Now we are Junlors The campus lmprovements durmg the summer lnclude a new baseball diamond an elght lap track wxth 120 yard straight away and Jumping puts The lnterlor of Chase Hall has been renovated to make attractlve apartments for faculty famllles and staff members September 17 Classes started todav The new rotatmg schedule prevents our sleeping through the same class every mormng When penod 1 rolled around we entered Mlss Russell s class wlth some trepldatxon For two years we have been hearmg fearful rumors of her tough Jumor Enghsh course but we were all m general agreement thls afternoon that we couldn t have asked for a better teacher September 20 A change has occurred ln the Saturday mght movle set up Most of us apprecxate the new machme whxch makes lt posslble for us to hear the movie . , 1 ' ' . , . . . . , . . , . . It is reported that Mr. Gordon still finds the back row more interesting than the movie October 4 On this most glorious of warm fall days the entire school Journeyed through the brilliant countryside to Hebron Once there victory tasted sweet Sam s Itahan sandwiches on the way home were good too October 23 Forest fires have sprung up all around us on account of the unprece dented dryness From the tower the destructive progress of the flames can be clearly followed November 11 Today an impressive ceremony lnaugurated the use of the Tow er Music System dedicated to the 4-41 Kents Hill bovs and girls who serv ed m 11 orld War 2 fifteen of whom lost their llv es This music system will pl ty chimes from the Bearce Hall tower May 15 Tonight we were entertained by the spring dr rmatic production Stage Door Connie Barr recelved an orchld from the cast for her fine acting Eight members of the Junior class who had parts of varying importance w ere Lucille Roberts Carolyn Place Carollyn Flagg -Xnn Graves 'N xtfehe Arnold Kenneth Sprague Pattargell lNxcolct and Paul Grenier Serv 1ng on the production staff were Joyce 11 heeler John Hamilton and Fred 11 orster May Q0 194-8 hlargaret Chase Smith w ho is campaigning to be the first w oman United States Senator to be elected ln her own right delighted her Ixents Hill audience by her candid views and unassuming pe rsonalitv June 6 Toel ay we said goodby to the school and the cl iss of 1948 after the grad uation exercises in which our class w as well represented Ixenneth Sprague led the gradu ating group as the cl rss marshall and Muriel Sprague recelv ed the Fac ulty prize for keeping the neatest room during the year Cvthnla Cleveland rece ived the Kreger Prize for 0lltSt8I1d1I1g character and scholarship end also a prize for hav ing the highest average in the Junior class Barbara Purssell receiv ed an aw ard for having the highest average in the Junior College Freshman Class It looks as though the Class of 194-9 is reallv going to be successful October 10 Kents Hill s first Home Coming YY eeleend has been a success I' riends alumnl and students enJovcd together the girls tie score hockey g :mc with W ilton and bovs victory ln feiotball over Livermore Falls Two hundred students and guests shared a buffet supper end attended the flrst movie program held in the new the iter Enjoyable sehool pictures were part of the entertalnment Sunday October 11 A student planned vesper service in Deering Chapel this afternoon was conducted by Muriel Sprague and Cv nthia Cleveland X well thought out zddress bv Ivan Wltham and a vocal solo bv Ixenneth Sprague were much apprcci rted as the girls who had the privilege of escorting them and cuttlng in as well as of buving the tickets Pumpkins md bales of hav geve a rustic background for the informal to say the least costumes worn The student b end new lv org mired under the leadership of Holt Bussell was 1 hit Nov ember 13 ll ts it the date or the weather?
