Swett, not only in playing ability but also in spirit. ln addition to being outweighed in almost every game, our greatest, handicap was inexperience. Another handicap was the inability of the team to play good football until the second half when we would outplay our opponents, but not enough to win. As the season progressed and the boys gained some experience, we gave every team we played a. tough game before losing by a touchdown or a point after touchdown, as was the case in the final and most thrilling game of the season with Livermore Falls. In this game the conversion attempt hit the crossbar and a last minute drive by Kents Hill was stopped by the clock. In the last Cony game the team penetrated the Cony ten yard line four times only to have a touchdown called back for offsides. Because we learned to like football and to play a good, clean game, the season was a success, Elliot Towle ' 1 ' v :MQ A lllllllllllllu lxl-X lw HII I X ARSITY I1OO'1Bxl I TEXNI 1048 luurth Row XII' Currler Mr Dunn IIh1rcl Ross ll Scccomhc J Julu T Perlxms D 'wpzuldmg Ii Pctnrson I I ah B Sn 1 N-unullims P Brulffm F Iimllmm I Wltham IX Blmlw II Busscll E McCa.r thx I Ilrulwtrut I Himltun l'1rstRmx I lfloml f Nlqrrlll I Nuflhnm I Xtuoofl I Boutnllu' N Irulmmf IXUlIlllllxlS RIA IILVS OI' I XRSITX POOTBXII SEASON Coschu Wir Dunn Nlr Qurrlcr Cr Fzpt uns Iuhn Nculh Lm Iuhn Xtsxood NI in :gm rs ll llln am Nccnnxlx R05 I Ltr rwn furmr Iarlxms lxqni Hxll IX Ixentw Hull Ixe-nts Hull I ns n nu Ixcnk Hull W lltun Ixent II1ll Helwron X season not 0lltStlIlfllIljl'lN uctorlous but full ff spmt xx IS had by the 1948 lxmnts Hxll foutlull tc UIII X short conclltxonmg 4 mm of two md 1. hllf weeks xx IS spent gcttmg org mwul lIlfIC'0HClltlUI1CflIJY thn football tm am c mdxcl ntu Vle had our ups xml flmxns mth sucrzl restrlctmg lI'lJllI'llS IXQIIIS Hxll s opp :ments mit an ultm n rrnpplul but spunlo tr lm xxlth thc flmtfrmmulr ulung, ml Ur Dunn unl Ur f urrlgr Ixfnts Illll worked t rough the fill sa mm Ihm pllur warm spirlxul mal le-fl ln um mpt uns 0 n Nmedhfxm .mrl Inhn Xtuu rl tmp hustlmr frrn1Urnno Our four lossu xml thru x IKIUTIKN h ul lltth Hlglllfli mu comp In-fl to thm genumc flue-lopmcnt of spmt xml CUI'llIJlIllUIl5lllp gunul ln thi lmms ln tha tn mmorlx nl' th1 1948 Sqn ul lx lll xxltll un 1 l I - C . A great many of the boys who reported had had no previous experience but they made up in spirit what was lacking in skill. The boys had a fine time and a profitable season under the competent coaching of Mr. Currier. Members of the team received letters at the spring sports banquet an occasion which was made memorable for all of us also because of the inspirational speech given on that occasion by Mr. Ray Eliot 26 head coach at the Unix ersity- of Illinois. His topic, The VVill to Win, was an important one to all interested in athletics. Letters were awarded to Manager Fred IVorster, Franklin and Gerald Cowper- thwaite, Donald Lawliss, Mzilcrrlin Kennedy, Gaylord Boutilier, Harrison Richard- son, Harry Phillips, Robert Davis, Turner Perkins, Alwin Kelley, Raymond Stevens, and Ivan Vilitham. It turned out to be a good season as far as results were concerned, however with seven games won and two losses. Rain forced the cancellation of two games with Hebron and several postponements. Coach Vellante did an excellent job of guiding the boys, who showed great improvement. The spirit was high all during the season. Our star pitcher was Charles Cook, who has since been signed by the Boston Red Sox. The members of the squad who received letters were Augustus Gregory, Gardiner Richardson, Marshall Sawyer, Curtis Kimball, Edward Perkins, Charles Cook, Norman Higgins, Martin Feingold, John Hamilton, Merrill Bartlett, John Bou- tilier, and Manager Roy Chapman.
