Kenton Senior High School ceased to exist and Kenton High School began. The re-organization of the Kenton City Schools prompted this change. It was ninteen years ago that then Kenton High School became Kenton Senior High, also as a result of an organizational change and the build- ing of the present high school building. We now return to the former status of being a high school. Kenton Junior High School became Kenton Middle school for grades 6 to 8 and the freshmen moved to the high school building. The high school welcomes the freshmen and is sure they will add a great deal to the activities and life of Kenton High School. — Editors 4 Kenton High School QUIZ BOWL CHAMPIONS Ohio University Team: Chuck Gcrlach. John Hong. Eric Kuck. Darrel Dewese. Phil Hingson. In 1981, for the first time ever. Kenton High School sent a “Quiz Bowl” team into competition and they did suprisingly well. It began in Septem- ber of 1981 when Kenton received an invitation to the first-ever Ohio University College Prep Bow l. Under the able direction of advisors Mrs. Juanita Gordon and Mr. Mike Hubbcll. a team was organized and drilled in numerous fields of study. On November 20th. a team of under- classmen John Hong. Charles Gerlach. Darrel Dewese. Eric Kuck. Phil Hingson and alternates Kelli Poland Laura Branch travelled to Ohio University with the promise by Principal John Murray “that if they won they would receive all A s.“ It's something what a little incentive can do!!! Competing were 16 teams from around Ohio. Kenton won this double elimination tournament and will return in the fall of 82 to defend its championship. On April 2, 1982. the Kenton team participated in the Seventh Crcstview Scholastic Bowl at Crestview High School. Kenton handily defeated other teams before meeting Wayne Trace in the finals. Our team narrowly beat Wayne Trace to take the Championship, 29-28. Thanks to the hard work of the team and their advisors, the quiz bowl team got off to a good start and it is hoped that continued work and dedication will allow for even more success in the future. Quiz Bowl Team 5 “ON TOUR” Immediately upon our return from Pitts- burg, preparation began for our next trip to the regional competition. Again, the Kenton community showed their generosity and we were able to raise enough for second trip and also to perform on the steps of the Capitol in Washington. D.C. In Baltimore, we were one of seven groups competing and the only high school ensemble. The other six groups were all adult. We did not place in the regional compe- tition, yet. were proud of our achievements and proud that we were able to represent our school, our community and our state in Wash- ington and Baltimore. In November, the decision was made to en- ter the Top 20 in some form of competition. After examining several options we decided to try the “Johnny Mann's Great American Cho- ral Festival. Since there were local conflicts for the Ohio competition, we received permis- sion to enter the Festival in Pittsburgh, Penn- sylvania. Funding for this trip was made possi- ble through the very generous hearts of the Kenton Community. In Pittsburgh, we were one of twenty choirs in four different catagories competing for one of two top prizes and the chance to advance to the regional Festival to be held in Baltimore, Maryland. Lady Luck was with us and our time in preparation proved to be enough to help us win one of the two top prizes. 6 Top 20 On Tour THE TOP 20 PERFORMS ON THE CAPITOL STEPS Top 20 On Tour 7 THE READING LAB Reading is basic to every subject in the high school. Through the efforts of Mr. William Barrett, guidance counselor. Ken- ton High School was the recipient of a state grant which provided S15.000 worth of reading equipment, developmental reading materials, and furnishings for “one of the most mod- ern. well-equipped reading laboratories in the state.' Through test results and teacher recommendations, thirty students who wanted to improve their reading comprehension, reading speed, and vocabulary participated in this reading lab experiment. Each student had an individualized program set up for him so that he could progress at his ow n reading rate. Under the supervision of English teacher. Mrs. Juanita Gor- don. and aide. Mrs. Pat McPherson, each student learned to operate a variety of reading machines: VuMates, Guided readers, and cassette players. In addition, each student was responsible for his own testing and record keeping. Students who took part received English credit for taking the course. . . . Tammy Wilson, the KHS Drama Club successfully presented the children's comedy entitled “The Clumsy Custard Horror Show and Ice Cream Clone ReviewThe play was presetned to all elemen- tary students of the Kenton Schools at a special assem- bly and on one evening for the general public. The success of the play was attributed to the very respon- sive audiences at both performances. Many scenes of the play required those in the audience to provide sound effects which helped bring them into the action of the play itself. The story of the pla revolves around Princess Prince, whose father King Dumb as arranged a Prince Picking Contest to marry her off. The son of an old friend has come to woo the princess. At the same time. Dacron, an enemy of the King, is plotting with his agents, the Ice Cream Clones to capture the princess and have her for himself. His friends son. Sawshbuck. saves the princess but the King makes a mistake throws him in the dungeon. The remainder of the story deals with Swashbuck getting out of the dungeon and again saving the Princess from Dacron. And like all good fairs tales, the hero marries the princess and lives happily ever after. KHS Drama Club 33 MAKE-UP CREW Dede Dulin. Gay Cronlcy. Julie Pack. Suzanne Pfeiffer. STAGE CREW Bob Norton. Among these advan- tages is the welcoming of both freshmen and sophomore members into the Wild- cat Marching Band. Under the watch- ful eyes of junior and senior squad lead- ers. these two classes learned the funda- mentals of good marching and excelled in ability and spirit to make this year's band a super band. Right: Rifle Corps members Kim Murphy. Javme Clark, and Tina Nichols. Below: Kelly Harrington, drum major, leads the band through a difficult man- uver. Behind the band, dazzcling the fans with their rainbow colors, the 1981 - 82 flag corps put on a spectacular performance. Under the direction of Miss DcKancy and head flag. Michelle Buyer. The flags sold candles and placcmats to obtain enough money to purchase new poles and the magnificently arrayed flags. The senior members of the Wildcat Band display their spirit after a suc- cessful Senior show in which the Seniors made up the routines, charts and taught the entire show to the underclass- men.
