JUNIOR VARSITY ROW 1: Sandy Shogren, Wildcat. ROW 2: Mona Davis, Liz Ehlen. ROW 3: Jayne Davis, Kirsten Winzenried. The cheerleaders had a hard job this year: Trying to get some spirit at KSHS. Many students at the beginning of the year were lacking in enthusiasm, but by the end of the year many had changed their minds. The cheerleaders sponsored 50's day with a big pep rally including skits by every class and even the teachers. Heads of each squad were: Cyd Davis, Varsity; Jayne Davis, Junior Var- sity; and Kaelyn Boner, Wrestling. This was the first year for Wrestling Cheerleaders and they helped to get many students interested in this new KSHS sport. 89 90 91 THE VOCATIONAL CANOE RACE Seniors: Deb Rader and Kim Hines seemed to have tipped over. The Second Annual Vocational Canoe Race was held during the month of May. Mr. Dave Sturgeon was in charge, and trophies were given to the winning canoers. To participate a student had to belong to any vocational class including Home Ec., Shop, Business and any of the co-op programs. Everyone who participated had a good time eventhough there were many sore muscles the morning after. Tony Hare and Dave Whitaker are ahead. 92 SWIM, Kay, SWIM!!! This might not seem like a success but con- sidering the hard work and sacrafice of the team members, our season was a success. All of the team members were dedicated and always tried to do their best. Next year with a few more participants, we hope not only for personal triumphs but for team ones as well. J.V. player Rich McKean makes the tackle 100 against Upper Sandusky. The 1974 football season started out on a suc- cessful note with a 19-12 victor over Bellefontaine. A fine performance was turned in by Tom Blume, Joe Handly, Tony Osbun, and Dale Gray. The Wildcats encountered Van Wert in its sec- ond contest and came out with a 6-6 tie. Both teams had opportunities to put the game away but neither took advantage of them. Kenton traveled to Delphos for its third game and came out ahead 30-0. This was the best offen- sive performance of the year. Tom Blume again turned in an excellent performance with a total of 325 yards for the evening. Kenton next traveled to Ottawa for the toughest contest thus far of the year. The Cats worked hard and got themselves mentally and physically ready to play the 9 team in the state. The Cats played excellent football for one half with the Titans, but Ottawa's size and experience took over and defeated the Cats 28-7 for their first loss. Homecoming faced the Cats against the Bulldogs of Elida. The Cats played well until the second half and then mistakes and mental errors hurt them. Ken- ton lost its second game in a row 20-14. League-leading Bath was Kenton's next opponent. Bath set up its lone score on a kicking game error. The Cats had a chance to win the game but time ran out with the ball on the 2-yard line. The Cats were defeated again 7-0. Celina traveled to Kenton and handed them their 4th defeat in a row. The Cats had a let down both offensively and defensively and could not get things going. Celina prevailed 24-0. The Wildcats got on the winning track again when they defeated Defiance 19-15. Tom Blume and Kirk Shepherd turned in fine performances. Wapakoneta came to town with a good, big team. They handed the Cats their 5th defeat. The Redskins' depth and size were just too much for the Cats. Scott Smith turned in an excellent defensive performance with 24 tackles. For the season's finale, the Cats traveled to St. Marys. The Cats just could not get untracked and were handed a 44-6 beating. Overall the Cats ended with a 3-6-1 record. Kenton played good football at time and hurt them- selves at other times, but the Cats and Coach Lemon are expecting a great season next year. - Coach Lemon - Tom Temple carries the ball for Kenton in the game against Ottawa. The team made it to the WBL semifinals by defeating Wapak,, 41-39 in the first- round play. A week later, however, undefeat- ed Bath took the Wildcats out of the running for the Championship. All in all the girl's had a very challenging and successful season according to their splendid coach Miss Neva Foley. No wonder the cagers won their games. Just look at their offense procedure. Coach Foley gives last advice for the ballgame. Must of been good advice because the Kenton Cagers WON! 103 ROW 1: Coach Buck Riley. ROW 2: Tom Weis, Rodney Hensel, Terry Fults, Don Wright, Mark Terry, Dave McPheron, Keith Wright, Tom Blume, Boyd Downey, Rick Barger, Don Barker, Gary Lowe, Craig Oborn. ROW 1: Coach Tom Bell. ROW 2: Rick Koch, Rick Newland, John Schaub, Rex Hommel, Donavan Dodds, Ken Cooper, Todd Newman, Tim Rettger, Denny Dewese, Dennis McPheron, Terry Reddick. Despite having just three lettermen returning from the successful 73-74 campaign, the Wildcat cage pros- pects seemed good with many fine underclassmen with size and speed. Unfortunately, success was not in die script for the 74-75 squad as they witnessed poor court leadership, 34% Field gpal shooting and 49% free throw shooting to produce a very disappointing year. The encouraging factor of the season had to be the two consecutive wins over W.B.L. foes (Wapakoneta, St. Marys) as the underclassmen seemed to jell and were very instrumental in their late season victories. Coach Buck Riley Mark Terry, a senior, showed lots of leader- ship on the court. Donny Barker was a real hustler G team co-captain. SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS MVP................... The Wildcat Varsity Baseball team finished the season with a 9-10 record (1-7 WBL), which is the best record and closest to .500 in some years. The J. V. team, first in 3 years, were 7-3 (4-1 against WBL teams). The team established a new record for batting average (. 346), and new individual records were established by Gary Lowe and Allen Lease (batting average .458) and Gary Lowe (Doubles 8). With 28 boys out for baseball, it definitely seems that the Wildcat Baseball fortunes are on the way up. 106 Coach Chuck Wegner All the good work that Coach Wegner has put in this season has proven to be for the best for the Cats. Chuck Wegner, Baseball Coach FROM LEFT: Jeff Maybrey; manager, Bill Miller; Grounds Keeper 107 TENNIS This was the Second year of Tennis at KSHS. There was a lot more interest and participation by guys and girls both. Joe Prater was the new Coach. Kenton had a good season, especially since it is still such a new sport. With every member of the team having personal and team victories. Mark Terry is in there swinging! Mark just as the other members of the team, gave his all. 108 Maik Terry, Sue Tellejohn, and Todd Newman were all excellent players and received awards for being so. VOLLEYBALL As in most Ohio Schools, girls' interscholastic sports have been activated and many high school females are having the opportunity that their male counterparts have had for years! The girls involved love it! KSH girls competed in volleyball and sported a winning season. Kenton hosted the WBL volleyball tournament in November. And many individuals performed spectacularly. - Neva Foley - Michelle Keel, Lee Ann Purcell, Carla Mendenhall, and Karen Zuchetto, were just a few of the fantastic girls who participated in volleyball this year. 115 A G A M lifl Jn j a w - ROW 1: Nancy Koch, Lorrie Zachariahs, Becky Beaman, Cydney Davis, Lisa Richards. The gym was divided with a dance floor in the cen- ter. Around the edges of the dance floor, there were four countries: Venice, Italy; Paris, France; Hawaii, and Japan. Couples were seated in these areas and they discussed every- thing from what to do at after-prom to the danc- ing entertainment provided by Chuck and Sharon Wegner. Other dancing entertainment was provided by Burke Coats and Cherrvl Mullady and Jerry Mul- lins and Vicki Butterman who did the bump. Refreshments provided by the servers included everything from pizza to watermelon. The music was provided by the Jukebox since the band's bus broke down and they did not ar- rive. Jerry's Pizza, Hillcrest Lanes, Skateland, and the Frontier Theatre provided the After- Prom. Towering Inferno was shown at the Theatre. Those who really cared to stay out late may have gone to the Plaze Inn for break- fast. Congratulations to the Class of '76 for doing a very good job on the Prom. It was an enjoy- able experience that will be remembered for a long time by those who attended it. Kathy looks enthusiastic. 130 Mr. and Mrs. Murray seem to be enjoying themselves. We know that times have been hard this past year but when we needed you, you came through and we greatly appreciate it. We hope that you like our yearbook and that we can count on your patronage in the future. 156 Now that the school year is at the end, each of us will think back to serious or hu- morous things that may have happened to us during the year. Each of us will have our own personal triumphs, such as passing an exam, making the team, being in the library for a whole period without getting yelled at, or being in the hall without a pass and not getting caught. We will also each have our own defeats, but some things almost all of us will remember are: Mr. Zitto shaving off his beard, the jukebox in the cafeteria being broke for two solid weeks, a bunch of bull in front of the school, 50's day, graduation being outdoors, the Dollars for Scholars auction with whip cream for the faculty members, and of course, who could forget Mr. Broyles. 157 Jill Rodenburger 158 Cathy Gossard Larry Bushong - Quill and Scroll Pam Grauel - Quill and Scroll The 1975 Echo Staff would like to thank the following students for their help with our yearbook: Kathy Sherman, Charlene Pred- more, Sharon Jones, Lorrie Szymanski, Cece Sorgen. Also a great big thanks to Pat Deardorff, Sherry Millard, Mr. Aller, and to Mr. Kaufman and the Kenton Times. Echo staff members would received Quill and Scroll awards for their first year were Pam Grauel and Larry Bushong. Stephanie Purcell and Kim Zachariah received recognition for the second year. We hope you like our yearbook and appreciate our time and efforts. 159 Leslie Smith and Janet Fults A yearbook is for memories. Many times we don't realize how important something has been to us until it's over or gone. Perhaps your yearbook can bring back the memories of your friends and enemies the good times and bad times, and the smiles and the frowns. In my three years of high school, I have thoroughly enjoyed putting together the yearbook. You must be dedi- cated, but the fun you have and the people you meet measure high over the work you have to do. I encourage all students to become involved. It doesn't have to be in a sport or a club. But become involved with your other classmates. Get to know each other before graduation comes and it's too late. In finishing may I leave you with this wish In sliding down the banister of life, may all the splinters point the other direction.
