There must be a place where the kiddies Play happily all the day through; There must be a land so fashioned and planned That love is eternal and true. I'll call it my Paradise Island, A place where I'll get a new start; Where there's no such thing as deception's cruel sting, And love never walks on your heart. Someday I shall come to my island And stand on that beautiful shore, To find that life seems to have been only dreams, Then I'll never cry anymore. -Rex Mobley 25 SENIORS The Class of 1974 Miles Reed Armentrout Miles Steven Roy Benson Steve 28 Michael Conrad Bopp Mike Pamela Sue Biddinger Pam Kevin James Born Kevin Alicia Jane Beach Lisa Robert William Bidwell Bob Johna Marie Bosher Johna Marda Jeanne Boyle Mazda Karen Sue Buerger Karen Terri DiAnn Bowman Terri Janet Sue Brim Janet Timothy Mack Busch Tim Ruth Ella Boyd Ruthie Michael Allen Broseke Mike Gloria Jean Bushong Gloria 29 Guy Robert Carr Rob Cheryl A. Organized in 1972, KWIT has an impressive rec- ord of over 200 Programs broadcast by KSHS students for their school and community on an access channel of Warner Brothers Cable TV of Kenton. Kenton school system has access to the cable system anytime they want to use it. Program series include: Around Town, cover- ing community-related activities; Whats Hap- pening, highlights of school activities; Per- sonality Plus, spotlight on area talent; Question and Answer, covering viewers' questions per- taining to school and community; and Meet The New Faculty, and introduction of new teachers in the Kenton school system. In addition, KWIT also has a full sports schedule covering baseball games, pep rallies, wrestling matches and the annual spring sports banquet. Comedy skits are also part of the fare with such takeoffs as the Trotting Gourmet and Johnny Parson. Special lectures are also taped for broadcast. In addition to providing an entertaining and in- formative service to the community, KWIT also offers teachers the capability of taping in-school and evening programs for flexible scheduling in classroom activities. The list of programs and future plans for station KWIT goes on and on and illustrates how ed- ucational the television experience can be with the help of an inexhaustible teacher, a co- operative cable company and an interested com- munity. Mr. Bryant, his students, Warner Brothers Cable TV, and the Kenton School System are to be congratulated on the success of KWIT. This year will be Mr. Bryant's last year at Kenton Senior High School as he resigned. He and his wife will be going to Iran to teach for at least the next two years. The new stadium is designed so that you can see the football field from every seat, there is room for a consession stand underneath, it is designed so you can enter from the underneath. And it will be ready for use by the next football season. Many organizations and individuals worked very hard to raise money for the stadium, and it could not be possible without them. Above: Mr. Richard Zitto gave the first contribution for the stadium from the Kenton Education Association, (KEA). Left: Ken Oldham contributed the first check from a school organization, which was Future Farmers of America. (FFA). KENTON'S NEW STADIUM? 94 In Memory of Larry Curtis With each passing day we'll try to find a way, to say just how much we really cared. Your death was one we could not believe Your friendship was something we could not deceive Though you're gone, in our prayers you'll still be the same precious Larry you always were to me. There is a sadness hanging over me, Until once again, your face I will see I knew you a little, but liked you a lot, I'll remember you always and forget you not. Larry's Friends ATHLETICS Football 1973 The 1973 football season was predicted to be one of Kenton s better seasons with 21 senior lettermen and three fine running backs returning. The only question was whether new head coach Dick Cannode, could mold the team into his offensive and defensive think- ing after taking over in late June. Even though the season began with a heart breaking loss to Beliefontaine, things looked promising. Ken- ton won their next two games, but then key injuries to Tom Blume, Brent Ommert, Dan Hord, and others began to take their toll. Kenton lost their next two games, and then beat Elida, in an inspirational 21-20 come from behind victory. Kenton lost their next four games to teams that finish no lower than third place in the league. Kenton's last game against St. Marys gave a good indication of the type of game Kenton is capable of playing and must play if they are going to compete in the always tough W.B.L. -Coach Cannode Kenton 13 Bellefontaine Kenton 33 Van Wert Kenton 28 Delphos St John Kenton 19 Ottawa-Glandorf Kenton 21 Elida Kenton 0 Bath Kenton 3 Celina Kenton 15 Defiance Kenton 9 Wapakoneta Kenton 0 St. Marys 14 8 8 42 20 38 20 49 23 22 98 AWARDS! The Super-Cats opened their season on a good note by defeating strong AAA Delaware Hayes at Delaware. Other glittering wins were over state ranked, undefeated River Valley and stompin Lima Land's number one team, Elida. At one stage of the season, the Wildcat cagers were ranked 3rd in the Lima News poll with their 8-3 mark. With just seven games re- maining, it looked as though the Cats were on their way to one of the school's finest records ever. Unfortunately, the script was written differently as the team dropped six close games and had to defeat St. Mary's on their home floor to salvage a 9-9 slate and finish 7th in Lima Land's AA poll. The roundballers achieved many goals and set several, yet their greatest achievement was the respect they attained from their always tough, traditional Western Buckeye League teams. The 1974-75 team welcomes 3 returnees in co-captains Donny Barker, Tom Blume, Mark Terry and a host of talented underclassmen to keep the BIG RED MACHINE rolling. 105 -Coach Buck Riley Baseball 1974 Row 1: Rick Barger, Scott Smith, Tim Claybaugh, Eric Henley, Gary Lowe. Tom and Brent both played in the league's first East-West all-star game at Lima Bath. An inexperienced, young squad, the 1974 Wildcat baseball team came in with a 5-11 record. The reason was one of highs and lows; playing poorly and losing big, and playing well and winning big. The 'Cats did well against non-league opponents, being 5-3, but lost all eight league games. They just weren't able to put everything together at the right time. LETTERMEN - Seniors - Brent Ommert (3), John Schaub (2), W.T. Johnson (2), Greg King (2), and Doug Lindsey (1). Mark Terry takes the lead in this Cross Country meet. Ill Track 1974 112 1974 served as a building year for the Ken- ton Senior High thinclads. They lost only five members of the team to graduation, so therefore many younger members gained the experience which will prove valuable to them next year. Kenton added a new member to its Athletic Program in 1973 Wrestling. Being a new sport it was expected that the Cats would have trouble as a team, but in- dividually there were several outstanding per- formances. Tim Claybaugh was selected as the team's Outstanding Wrestler with an individual record in duel meets of 7 wins, 2 defeats, and 1 draw. Brad Beaman was the team's Most Improved Wrestler. Brad was also the team's Top Tournament Wrestler finishing second in the North Union tournament and advancing to the semi-finals in the Sectional Tourna- ment before being eliminated. Kerry Oberlitner was elected the team's Captain. Kerry had a fine duel meet record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw. Throughout the season Kerry proved he was an outstanding leader. The team as a whole was very young and inexperi- enced. Next year with ten returning lettermen we are expecting a great deal of improvement. With the returning lettermen and an outstanding freshmen group moving up into the High School, Kenton's Wrestling Program will be on the Up Swing . -Coach Kokinda AWARDS! Three new Interscholastic sports for Girls came to KSH this year, but basketball was the most popular. The Varsity squad did very well con- sidering it was the first year. Only one of the basketball participants graduated this year, P. G. Nicely, so next year with the many returnees, the KSH Girls' Basketball team should do very well. Basketball coaches were Miss Neva Foley, Varsity, and Mrs. Shelley Cran- mer, Junior Varsity. 119 Kenton Sr. High As everyone knows, Happiness Is . . . A Wildcat Victory. Homecoming 1973 The junior class won the hall-decorating contest. To show their spirit, the teachers wore football jerseys on the game day. The traditional homecoming festivities had many changes this year. The choosing of the attendants was done in two ballotings. In the first balloting nominations for the attendants were made. The names of the top five girls (who had received the most votes) in each class were placed on a second ballot and from this second voting the attendants were chosen. As for the seniors, three girls were chosen to repre- sent their class. One of these girls would be the queen, but no one knew who it would be until her name was announced on Homecoming night. The snake dance and bonfire were primarily the same--a march of cheers from the uptown square and the burning of the Bath dummy. This year, to give the school more spirit, a hall-decorating contest was held. All of the classes decorated their hall trying to win the prize for the class having the most spirit. Each of the halls had fine decorations and the junior class won the contest. The homecoming attendants were Tammy Mer- chant, sophomore; Cydney Davis, junior; Bonita Hensel and Kim Harrington, seniors; and Pam Biddinger was crowned queen. The girls and their escorts were seated on a beautiful float. The honored Miss Biddinger and her attendants were dressed in informal wear instead of the traditional gowns. Also not in Kenton's tradition, the mighty Wildcats fell after a decisive battle to the Bath Wildcats. The score was 38-0. Following the Homecoming game a record hop was held in the Senior High gym. The theme of the dance was Mickey and the Stars and the decorations were provided by the senior high art department. All in all, homecoming week at KSHS was enjoyable for all those concerned. 124 Above: The bonfire that was held on Thursday night before the game. Mr. Keel has been serving Kenton since 1953. Keel was an outstanding athlete at Kenton High School, graduating in 1937. He attended Ohio Northern University where he continued to excel in sports, and graduated with a bachelor of science de- gree in physical education in 1941. He is a member of the ONU Hall of Fame. He was awarded his master's degree in physical education from Ohio State University in 1956. Replacing Mr. Keel will be Mr. Richard Cannode who resigned from his post as head football coach this year. Mr. Mike Lemon will be replacing Coach Cannode for the 74-75 football season. Mr. Keel will be greatly missed by faculty and students at the Senior High School. Mr George Keel Athletic Director KSHS Welcomes 2 Exchange Students KSHS welcomed two exchange students from Brazil this year. They were Carmen de Matos and Tania Benn from Brazil. Tania was from Brazilia and was a senior. She received her diploma along with the other members of the senior class at graduation. Carmen was a sophomore from Sabral, Brazil. She enjoyed Phys. Ed. and was very good in sports that she had never played in Brazil such as basketball. Tania lived with Mr. and Mis. Ralph Newman and Carmen lived with Mr. and Mrs. Ora Winzenreid. Both girls will be returning to their native Brazil in July. 135 Graduation The class of 1974 started a new tradition at Kenton Senior High in selecting two student speakers, Kathy Healy and Lewis Homer, to replace the guest speaker.
