FOREWORD Thank you, students of K.H.S.! You have written another Echo. It is true the 1962 Yearbook is in the handwriting of the handful of members in the staff, but just as the Bible is not the word of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John but rather of GOD, thus the Echo is not the act of Pat, Norman, Sue or Toadie, but your efforts. We know you will cherish what you have writ- ten . D.J .O. CONTENTS Administration 5 Seniors 13 Commencement 28 Juniors 29 Sophomores 37 Freshmen 45 Organizations 53 Senior Activities 78 Athletics 83 Snapshots 98 DEDICA TIOJV We, the Echo staff of 1961-62, wish to dedicate this yearbook to Miss Anne Johnson, who has given her time so unselfishly to the students. Also as Y-teen advisor she has led many young girls into a more Christian way of life. As a small reward for all her wonderful deeds of good will, we dedicate this Echo to Miss Johnson, Latin teacher. 3 Kenton High School, Kenton, Ohio 4 ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. John Jester, Mr. Lester Ward, Mr. Frank Bondi, Mr. Duane Ramsey, and Mr. Kenneth Orsborn. BRADLEYS JEWELERS GEMOLOGISTS - BRIDAL SERVICE WEST SIDE SQUARE WILDCA T BAND The Kenton Wildcat Band had a very successful season this past school year. They were able to bring home a trophy from every marching competition parade, that they participated in. The football season was highlighted by the many fan- cy, highstepping routines that were worked out by our di- rector, Mr. White. The concert season was also very enlightening. The band received a I rating in the District Choir and Band Contest and then pro- ceeded to get another I rat- ing in the State Choir and Band Contest. THE STUDENT COUNCIL The Kenton High School Student Council for many years has been composed of presidents or other representatives of organizations and classes. It is a co-ordin- ating group for the entire student body. This year they have been very active and have resolved many problems of con- cern to the student body. A few of the projects were: participating in the Northwest Area Council Meetings, purchase of a new flag and stand for auditorium use, providing hand books for students, homecom- ing activities, purchase of waste paper containers for use in front of the build- ing, provided two scholarships for deserving Seniors (Ruth Ann Wright and Don Well) and numerous other minor projects. Of course his tre- mendous rounds were not counted in the team totals. He not only in- spired the team but also pointed out the quality of the K -28 golf ball. BILL BUSS Bill, 1 man, scored 3 1 2 out of 4 points against Ashland, who went on to become State Champions. He was medalist in theW.B. L. and third at the District but failed to qualify for the State by one stroke. Bill gained a sec- ond year letter as the team has existed for 2 years. He was unanimous- ly voted most valu- able senior. Buss is the only senior on the squad. BOB MARSHALL Bob, 2 man, came in third in the W. B. L. meet and was in the top ten in the District Meet, out of 64 players. He earned a se- cond year letter. Kenton DAN O'CONNOR Dan, 3 man, was runner-up in the W. B. L. meet. He is a second year letter man. PETE UCHTY Pete, 4 man, is a second year letter man. CAMPING EQUIPMENT COMPLIMENTS OF RUBINS' SPORT SHOP YEAGLEY HARDWARE GIFTS, HOUSEWARES. HARDWARE Class Prophecy As I was taking a walk one evening, I chanced to wander down a lonely little backstreet on which I found nothing but a small newsstand. One of the newspapers caught my eye. It was entitled appropriately enough Echoes of Time. I picked up the newspaper and began to read. Imagine my shock when I read, Editor-in-Chief, NORMAN DUNAHUE. Why he was in my class at school! I read on further in this strange newspaper and found to my surprise that much of the news was concerned with my old friends from the Class of '62. On the front page my attention was caught by big bold headlines which read, THOMAS L. SMITH, the People's Candidate for U. S. Presidency. In the article following I noticed that BRUCE McCULLOUGH, was going to serve as his Campaign Manager. Upon closer inspection I observed that DAVE WINTERS, our former Class President, had been appointed Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A picture on the front page also attracted my attention. It was of STEVE HUBER, the new Mayor of Kenton, attending the grand opening of the newest filling station in JIM LLOYD'S, famous Filling Station chain. Also to be seen in the picture were CAROL WILSON, Secretary to the Mayor; MIKE FINK, successful owner of Fink-Rent-a-Car; DOUG ANDERSON, Manager of the local IGA; and IVAN DICK and DON DIETZ of Dick and Dietz Iron Works. I was very proud, when I read in the international news that JANET MABREY, U.S. Ambassador was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in the Belgian Congo. Also receiving a Nobel Prize, only for Physics, was DON WELLS. The article stated that sincere congratulations had been extended to these two Americans by BOB PARMLEY, President of General Electric; JERRY MYERS, President of U.S. Steel; and ELMER WELLS, Head of Merk Laboratories. Upon turning to the next page of the newspaper I found the society page. I noticed that the newly elected Officers of the local PTA were all former classmates of mine. I knew them as SHARON ALEXANDER, PEGGY COLE, BETTY LEGGE, and PATTI JOHNSON. The biggest event on the Society Page was the famed Debutante Ball held at BRUCE FICK'S, famous Resort in Miami Beach. Among the debutantes, I was aston- ished to see the names of some of my old friends, DIANA BROWN, PATSY BUSH, SHARON El BUNG, PENNY MAGANN, SANDY OATES, CAROL PARKS, GERALDINE WOODS, and KAY YOUNG. The music for this gala affair was furnished by JIM FINCH and his Orchestra, whose star attraction was the drummer, BILL COOPER. All of the orchestra's music had been arranged by DENNIS MACK. Also providing enter- tainment for the evening was JIM FAULKNER, famed Recording Star and HEATHER SPENCER-GREEN, Concert Pianist, who had just finished an engagement at Carnegie Hall. Flower arrangements for the affair were compliments of SUSIE HEILMAN. Food for the ball was furnished by CHARLENE SHROYER and ELEANOR CHAMBERLIN, owners of the finest Restaurant and Catering Service in Miami Beach, and BOB RHOADES, owner of the nation's Dairy Queen chain. Hairstyles for all the debutantes were created in the well known Salons of ELLEN ANDERSON and JUDY MEWHORTER, who had working with them three of the finest Beauticians in the country- KAREN DODDS, CANDY EDDY, and BRENDA KIPFER. Incidentally, all debutantes were graduates of CHARLENE OVERLY'S Charm School for Future Homecoming Queens. Every- body who was anybody, I noticed, attended this party. There was ED TWISS, International Playboy; JERRY BAILEY, the former Mr. F. B. L. A.; STEVE MAYS and MINOR CLEMONS, Business Tycoons and their Secre- taries, BETTY FURR, KAYLEEN HELDS, IRMA S CHI LUNG, and JANICE SCHOTT E. Also flying to Miami to attend this ball were CHERYL HILL and JUDY ORSBORN, Professors at Bowling Green State University, and JANET HOLBROOK, nationally known Psychiatrist. 78 Also on the Society Page I noticed a column entitled Hollywood News Notes. Imagine my surprise when I read that MIKE SHUSTER, will be appearing in a new Science Fiction Movie which will be opening soon at the Paramount Theater, which is owned and managed by PAM CLAPHAN. The newest Hollywood Starlet, LINDA PHILIPS, has been injured while on location, it was announced by her Press Secretary, JANE FITZ- PATRICK. Three Private Nurses, CAROL BLACK, SHARON SPONSLER, and VONDALE BIEDERMAN are in attendance on her, round the clock. RUTH SCHULMEYER and LINDA KRISHER, have collaborated to write the musical score for an up and coming star-studded production which features the Rockettes with whom SUSIE STURGIS now dances. JIM FOUT, now has his own Candid Camera Program on which this week he is featuring the High Fashion Model, SUSAN ASHBA and the new Comedian DON WALTERS On the page devoted to Local News I was interested to note that Police Officers LLOYD KINDLE and WALTER POWERS, had been called to investigate a robbery on GARY HEILMAN'S farm. The robbery was reported by his friend BOB HOSACK, President of the local Farm Bureau. Fireman DON KRAMER, was in- jured while fighting a fire at the farm of GARY SMITH. ROBERT WILCOX, LARRY PFEIFFER, JOHN RETTIG, and BILL JORDAN are all attending the National Grain Growers Convention in Kansas City. All of them are to be installed as National Officers. WAYNE RICKENBACHER has just accepted the position of County Extension Agent in Kenton, Ohio. JACK GORDON is principal speaker at the State Veterinarian's Convention. Two more new appointees to Branches of the Department of the Law are EDDIE PERKINS a member of the Highway Patrol and.BRENDA MORRISON to the Police Force, where she will be in charge of the shoplifting files. I also noticed that the secretaries in the offices of JIM REESE, well-known Draftsman, have honored RUTH ANN WRIGHT by electing her Miss Secretary for the second time. Those secretaries who made the honor possible were SANDY ARMSTRONG, JACKIE JONES, SHIRLEY PATRICK, LOU ANN HOLTZ- BERGER, and ANGIE STEPHENS. I also noted that several new teachers had been added to the Kenton School System. They were PAT CONNER and SUE SMALLEY in the Elementary system and KAREN LUDWIG to the English Department and JUDY JUMP to the Physical Education Department of Kenton High. In the field of Medicine I found that several of my old classmates had distinguished themselves. MARY ANN HERVEY has just opened a new Speech and Hearing Clinic in Cincinnati. Two of my old friends were on her staff, PAT HUELSTER and LYNDA ROBINSON. Dr. VERNON SHERMAN is now practicing medicine in Los Angeles. OLIVIA MILLISOR is now an instructor at Springfield School of Nursing and NITA MOLK and MARIANNE NEAL are now employed at a large hospital in Cleveland. JACK FIELDS has been appointed assistant head of the College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University. On the Sports Page it was plain to see that some of K. H. S. 's former athletes had made their mark. RON HORD and JACK NAUS are members of the next U. S. A. Summer Olympic Team. BILL HART is now pitching for the Cleveland Indians; RAY HARRIS is playing professional basketball, and RAY JACOBS, pro- fessional football. BILL BUSS has just won the Master's Open Golf Tournament; DENNIS OSBORN was lead- ing in the time trials for the Indianapolis 500; and one of the LARRY COX'S race horses is entered in the Kentucky Derby. CHARLIE BARTON has just accepted the position of head football coach at Purdue Uni- versity. Another note of interest was that VICKI BERONIUS has taken her champion volleyball team to Germany for international'competition. Under Service Notes, I saw that EDWIN KEARNS and JACK McCLAREN were both now stationed with the Air Force in Okinawa; WILBUR ROBY and RICHARD FRESHCORN are now serving with the Coast Guard; and JACK HIPSHER, MIKE ST. CLAIR, and JIM WARD have all been made generals in the U. S. Army. 79 Even the page of Comic Strips in this little newspaper were drawn by such famous cartoonists as BETTY BOYD, JUDY WILKINSON, BILL KEMPPAINEN, and RAY RUGGLEY. I was so fascinated by this newspaper that 1 decided to buy several copies to take to my friends. But, as I turned back to the little newsstand I found much to my amazement that it was gone. I slowly turned and walked home carrying in my hand a small paper telling of the successes of all my friends and bringing back memories of the times when I knew them as wonderful students at Kenton High School in the Class of '62.
