We ask pardon for the errors and a bit of thanks for the work done properly. Luanne Knollman, Editor-in-chief; Linda Blumenschine, Business Manager. Duties of American Citizenship (Editor note: This essay seemed to sum up the general feelings of the student body of KHS. -L.K.) by Lois Shroyer (winning essay in contest by Hardin County Bar Association in KHS) The duties of American citizenship are numerous, varied, and sometimes obscure. I have never seen a list of all the duties of an American citizen; and I doubt that such a list exists, for that which is the duty of citizenship to one man is not necessarily a duty to another. I think the duties of American citizenship can be grouped under four general headings: Spiritual, moral, educational, and political. The spiritual duties of citizenship may be considered the most important, for from the spirit springs the desire and the ability to perform the other duties of citizenship. In Magru- der's American Government” there is an account of a visitor to this country who determined to find America’s greatness. The man went to Congress, but the greatness was not there; he went to the political rallies, but the greatness was not there; he went to the Public Schools, but the greatness was not there; finally the man went to America's Churches, and America's greatness was there. America’s greatness is derived directly from the spiritual power of the people. Since the spiritual power of the people as a whole can be no stronger than that of the individual; it is each citizen's duty to develop his spiritual strength to the fullest of his ability. The moral duties of citizenship are closely connected with the spiritual duties. The moral duties are expressed concisely in the last sentence of the American Creed, I therefore be- lieve it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its Flag; and to defend it against all enemies. Love, support, obey, respect, defend— these five verbs sum up the moral duties of the individual citizen. If the citizen does not ful- fill his moral responsibilities then he is helping to weaken the moral strength and impact of the whole nation. The love due America from its citizens is not earned because America is a great country or because America is always motivated by noble ideals. This love is due America because in spite of its mistakes, it has offered to its people more than any other nation has offered to its people. America's citizens have been offered the chance to live, work, and develop under and to participate in the best form of government yet put into operation by man. The American citizen also has a duty to his country in the matter of education. The con- tinuing progress, strength, and prosperity of this country depend upon the education of its people and the educational level of the people as a whole cannot be higher than that of the in- dividual . The citizen has a responsibility to make the most of his years in public school, but he has a duty to go beyond the public school in his education. In fact he must continue his education for the rest of his life. The citizen has a responsibility to keep himself informed of what is happening in the nation and the world; he must keep his mind receptive to new ideas and con- cepts. The individual is responsible for stimulating and encouraging education among his fel- low citizens whenever he can do so. The citizen’s political duties are very important since the government in this country is run by political parties. The citizen has a duty to study the workings of politics and to become familiar with them; he should weigh political issues very carefully; he should try not to be a court historian when he is making decisions. The political duties include that of working in politics in any way in which the individual feels that he will be giving service to his country. Each of these duties depends completely upon the individual; for if the individual feels no moral obligation to perform these actions, he will not perform them. The individual is the most important factor in the past, present, and future of America. 5
