4 V V 7 t: fcV 2 r ; ■■l -rr. ♦ t 'pon.ecv iti Many things take place within the walls of this high school which will be remembered by all those who pass through its doors into a world of greater opportunity and new adventure. We, as seniors, can look back upon these four years filled with memories, both glad and sad, and remember al- ways the treasures which we found in our Alma Mater. We will have these moments to remember. Wi DecUceiti y t We, the Echo Staff of 1955, dedicate this edition of the Annual Echol to Mr. George Austin Keel, a graduate of Kenton High School in 1937. Mr. Keel attended Ohio Northern University where he majored in physical educa- tion, and graduated in 1941 . Mr. Keel's sense of fair play, sharp discipline, re- spect forscholarship, and cooperation with his colleagues are the mark of this gentleman, whom we respect. Through the efforts of this graduate, each and every student has gained a better understanding of sportsmanship and scholarship. School spirit is one of the many things stressed by our respected and admired coach. Through the efforts of the journalism class many edi- tions of the school paper were published during the course of the past school year. The students gained many in- sights in the field of journalism through the instruction received in the classroom work. In addition to work on the school paper, much time was spent in the editing of the yearbook . We, as a group, had enjoyable times in our work and efforts, and hope that all our readers enjoyed reading the published ma- terial . The journalism class is hard at work on a final copy of the school newspaper. Students enrolled in journalism this year were: J. Myers, J. Longbrake, J. Friedel, P. Stinson, S. Layton, J. Men- denhal, G. Mabrey, J. Oates, M. Roby, N. Todd, E. Boyd, D. Paul, S, Zachariah, D. Burba, C. Cox, C. Smith, I. Rogers, D. Hart, N. Longbroke, N. Wooley, England, E. Barclay, R. Ridenour, and E. Kearns. Mr. Thornton Lynam, Jr. was the advisor of the staff this year. 4 Miss Sloan's typing class is hard at work, save one. Come on, girls, let's play volleyball. Mr. Shepherd can surely explain an algebra problem in an interesting way. This is one of the projects undertaken by the boys in Mr. Kinney's shop room. Students in this classroom learn of the birds and bees. Many delicious dishes are cooked in this classroom with the guidance of Mrs. Knollman. These are the future farmers of America. Miss Terrill teaches these girls to sew fine garments. These students are learning the principal functions of good business. Mr. Billow is explaining to his history students. The Bill of Rights. These students speak French, but only in their class room work. These senior boys are operating the large machines under the direction of Mr. Kohler. These boys are really more ambitious in the machine shop. This is room 28, and this is the study hall. All students who enter this room study. (?) This is the open court which gives the students a view Mr. Russel walks through the hails of K. H. S. during the from the four hallways. quiet hours while students are in the classrooms. TOP ROW: (L. STUDENT COUNCIL The annual Homecoming Dance, the Christmas Dance, and the Open House are a few of the many activities which the Student Council sponsored during the year. The Student Council, consisting of the Presidents of the various organizations within our school, is a great credit to the everyday life of the students. Mr. Carl Russel I, Principal, supervised and assisted the group in their activities. Down comes the basket! We missed Connieduring the time of her hospitalization . The halls and classrooms seemed to lack that extra little bit of pep and happiness with Connie gone. Nothing delighted us more than to learn that Connie would be back to graduate with us in May. Connie was a member of our K . H. S. Band Although ill for many months, Connie is still able to wear a wholesome smile, which is characteristic of her person. This picture of Connie was taken at Christmas time in 1954 before her illness. 16 NANCY ALLEN Nurses Training; Y-Teens -2-3-4; F. H. A.-1-2-3; Art Club-3; Activity Director-4; Biology Club-2-3-4. This year under the leadership of Coach Glenn Martin, a sophomore basketball team was organized for the purpose of allowing more boys to enjoy this great sport and to provide more training for them. This new addition to the sport's curriculum gave the fc oys much experience which will help them greatly when they report for training next season. The games were played in the high school gymnasium preceding the reserve and varsity games. The Freshman squad provided opposition. First Jump Ball of the Season! On the evenings of April 18 and 19 the Senior Class presented the hilarious commedy, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, written by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. The plot of this production revolves around a voyage made by these two authors when they sailed for Europe on an ocean liner. Each tossing wave showed the girls in another amusing pre- dictment. The play rolled along in gay fashion and the final curtain brought down the house . The play was under the direction of Miss Isabel Sloan with the assistance of student director Sue Printz. KENTON STRUCTURAL AND Compliments of LIMA LOANS ORNAMENTAL IRON WORKS, INC. UHLMAN'S DEPT. STORE Designers and Fabricators of Metal Products When in the course of school events, it becomes necessary for the Senior Class to dissolve the educational bonds which have connected it to the other classes, and to assume the duties of citizenship for which their school life has prepared them, a decent respect to the opinion of the other classes requires that they should transcribe this history leading up to their graduation. We, the Senior Class of 1956, entered the halls of Kenton High School in the Fall of 1952, feeling a bit timid but eagerly looking forward to four years, the best four years of our lives. To govern us during our first session of school we elected Ted Lowe, President; Gene Dulin, Vice- President; and Joyce England, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Harland Kinney was our freshman advisor. To represent us in the royal court, we elected Saundra Thomas as attendant to homecoming queen. As our second session convened we elected Eddie Anderson, President; Joyce England, Vice- President; and Fred Am. Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. John LaFontaine was this year's advisor. We elected Vanda Anderson as attendant to the crown this year. The embers of a revolution began to burn when we entered as Junior Statesmen. We wanted to try new and different things. We began our third term by electing these officers; Lewis Davis, President; Ann Obcrlitner, Vice-President; Fatima Burd, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Glen Martin was our advisor. During our sessions we deeply missed representative, Connie Manlio, who was afflicted with T.B. At our homecoming game we were represented in the Queens' Court by Sharon Parrott. The girls in our assembly ruled when we presented Men Are Like Streetcars as our junior play. Sue Printz, Noreen Wooley, Don Hervey, Lowell Cahill, Jean Overly and Russell Frost were the leading representatives of our class in this line of art. The band, in which we had many members, gave outstanding performances this year. We also had members in the choir which gave the operetta Brigadoon , in which Hank Carmean had one of the leading roles. Emphasizing foreign affairs we presented Hawiian Nights as our prom. It was one of the best ever. On September 6, 1955, we entered K. H. S., took our honored places, and began our last term as Senior Senators. This year the embers of our revolution burst into flame as we decided to take the first class trip ever known to Kenton. Our destination was New York. We elected our President and members of his cabinet as follows; President, Charles Chaflin; Vice-President, Hank Carmean; Secretary-Treasurer, Joyce England. This year was one of our busiest. The seniors who wished to go on the New York trip had many money raising campaigns. Too, the seniors had their annual party -- in a barn! What senior could ever forget our last homecoming game asHerMajesty Sharon Parrott reigned as Queen and Charlene Fultz as her Lady-in-Waiting. Characteristic of our class, we presented Our Hearts Were Young and Gay onApril 18 and 19. Joyce England, Pat Butterman, Jay Pfeiffer, and Don Hervey were the leads. However, all work and fun must end as did our four year term. We picked the red rose for our flower; mint and white for our colors and Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well for our motto. Another first for the recent history of the school and our class, came up when we began to prepare for graduation. We had three Valdictorians: Mary Ann Wilson, Hank Carmean and Don Hervey. Planning for our graduation, we shall attempt another first by having services in the open air of Robinson Field. Thus ends our four years and for the support of this declaration and with a firm reliance on what the future holds for us, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor. -j SNAPSHOTS Order (Conreerr Loafin on
