Text from Pages 1 - 90 of the 1955 volume:

FOREWORD On the pages of this book is written the story of one of the happiest years of our lives. With the passingof time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and fainter then die away. Gone forever will be the routine of school life. It is the hope of the Echo Staff of 1955 that, as you glance through this book in years to come, you will recapture those moments-------and the echoes will begin again. Kenton High School Kenton, Ohio SEMPER FIDELIS; SEMPER IDEM (ALWAYS FAITHFUL; ALWAYS READY.) National iBnnnr oriety of rronftitrtj rhoolo The se lection of sixteen members of the Class of 1955 to active membership in the National Honor Society marks the eighteenth group of Seniors to be so honored since the institution of the Simon Kenton Chapter in 1938. Selection is made from the upper-third of the scholastic standing of the entire class. Only 15% of the class may be selected for the NHS. From the upper-third students rated each other upon the basis of leadership, character, and service. All the members of the faculty voted their preferences based upon student courtesy in man- ners, respect for the dignity of school instruction, and for the respect for the best traditions of the Kenton High School. Leadership inschool and community activities is achieved mainly by force of a magnetic personality, unwavering sincerity, and devotion to duty. Courtesy in manners, respect for the digni ty of authori ty, leadership and service in student and community affairs, combined with high scholarship have always been the mark of student honor. Brooks. r THE THREE MUSKETEERS We of the E cho staff wish to extend our si ncere thanks to Richard Simpson journal- ism teacher and Echo staff advisor for his guidance and reassurance during the first sem- ester . Mr. Simpson is missed greatly by all of us here at K.H.S. (Class ijistnr In the fall of 1951, one hundred and forty-four Freshmen entered the halls of Kenton high school carefully avoiding the dark corners and upperclassmen. Our first assignment as a class was to elect our class officers. Our president was Jim Moore; vice president, Victor Badertscher; and secretaiy, Eleanor Zachariah. This first assignment went very well under the direction of our advisor Mr. Kinney. As the year progressed we found many worthwhile activities to which we could belong, such as, the F. F. A., the F. H. A., the Junior Hi-Y, the choir, and the band. The next fall we started our year as Sophomores and were not plagued by the upperclassmen. To start our year off right we elected our class officers. Kathleen Conner was elected president; Gary McQuown, vice president; and Dana Daniels, secretary. Mr. Hackney was our class advisor. During this year many of the boys went out for basketball and football and helped the stand- ing of the Sophomore class. There were many girls who joined the Y-Teens which was open to the sophomores. This year we were also eligible for the Biology Club. The Choir presented the oper- etta, “Rose Marie”, and many of our class were represented in it. Finally we entered the halls of Kenton high as upperclassmen. We were Juniors! This year the class officers who were to raise the money for the prom were to be elected. The election went as follows: president, Fred Markley; vice president, Dick Berry; and secretary, Bob Neeson. Mr. Kinney again served as our class advisor. This year we gave our Junior play entitled, “What A Life”, under the direction of Miss Ramge. John Sturgeon and Gloria Pfeiffer played the leading roies. At the end of the year came the much awaited event, the Junior-Senior Prom. Di Ann Hastings served as chairman and was assisted by the various committees. The theme we selected was, “Under The Sea”. We felt that this was the greatest accomplishment of our three years at Kenton high. Then we were Seniors and felt we must make the most of this last and best year. The Homecoming game was played with Wapakoneta. The queen was Patsy Pemberton and the senior attendant was Gloria Pfeiffer. The queen and her attendants reigned over the Home- coming Dance in the gymnasium following the game. Our officers for this year were Dick Berry, president; John Tudor, vice president; and John Sturgeon, secretary. Once again our advisor was Mr. Hackney. This year the Biology Club donated the money to have a Wildcat painted on our gym floor. As a class we donated the money for the completion of a cement wall which was started in front of the school by the class of “54”. The play, “Time Out For Ginger”, was given by us Seniors under the direction of Miss Sloan. The leading roles were played by Di Ann Hastings and Mark Hanna. The Junior-Senior Prom held on April 29, was the last formal dance we attended at Kenton high. Baccalaureate was held May 22, and Commencement May 27. Thus ended our four wonder- ful years at K. H.
