LEAFING TH Il was on a sub-zero evening in lhe winler of I95O when business in lhe library was very poor lhal I picked up lhe Ialesl copy of lhe Life lo pass away lhe lime. Imagine my surprise when I glanced al lhe piclure on lhe cover which was Maxine Filzpalrick, our senior class presidenl, who had iusl won firsl place in lhe Olympics for lhe 80 meler hurdles which she finished in ll minules and 3 seconds. The piclure was laken by Bob Smilh who is now ace pholographer for Life magazine. Quickly I lurned lo lhe nexl page and saw a piclure of olher Olympic winners which dear old K. I-I. S. had produced. From Iefl lo righl il read: Mae Eberharl, high jump for women: Kenny Williams, discus lhrow: Kalhryn Kahley, iavelin lhrow: Bob Eberharl, ski lump: Reva I-lowe, Lenna Haudenschield, Dorolhy Schmidl, and Eliza- belh Clark, 400 meler relay and Mary Pal Dick, fancy figure skaling. The nexl couple of pages were filled wilh Lellers lo lhe Edilors and adverlise- menls. Then I discovered some colored piclures of lhe winning floals al Pasadena for lhe Rose Bowl game where Nolre Dame wilh Waller Gelzinger as coach, beal Soulhern California I4-O. The floals represenled differenl business corporalions. The grand prize winner was by lhe Slandard Oil Company of which Lowell Fundom is now manager. Don Mabrey and Joe I-lalhaway are also prominenl business men who have floals in lhe parade. Jack and Belly lRooll Kellle of lhe Kellle Aluminum Company were exlremely inleresled speclalors since lheir lwin daughlers, age 4. were riding on lhe queen's floal. Following lhe piclures of lhe Tournamenl of Roses was a full page piclure of Presidenl Dome of Harvard, formerly lhe Professor of Physics, bul now lhe head of lhe oldesl universily in lhe counlry. The famed slarelles, I noliced, had iusl Iefl lhe U. S. lo dance in all lhe royal courls of Europe. Those whom I knew were Gerlrude lFannyl Philips, Joyce Gelhaus, Ella Mae Marquarl. Billie Arnell, and Marian Bopp. They Iefl on lhe same ship on which Sophie, lhe buyer for Saks, Fiflh Avenue, and now known as Miss Newell, relurned from Paris wilh several original gowns which will soon be modeled by lhe famous mannequins of lhal slore. A few of lhe names were familiar lo me-Bellie Arnell, Warna Minler, Ann Bolchlell, who, I remembered had been chosen queen her senior year in high school by lhe loolball leam, and Virginia Gusl. Upon reading Virginia's name I wondered whal had become of Dave. Then I recalled lhal someone had lold me lhal he was now an energelic salesman for an adverlising firm in New York Cily. I lhoughl our class had been ralher successful for even lhe Melropolilan had signed up some of our old classmales. There was Calherine McNally, Hugh Omerod, John Crooks, who is lalcing afler his famous uncle, Richard Crooks. and Jean Candler, who, il seems, is faking lhe place formerly held by Kirslen Flagslad. I glanced lhrough a few more pages before I recognized anyone, bul finally, I saw lhal Mary Lou Akerman was now lhe edilor of lhe Ohio Slale Journal wilh Mary Jane Oslermyer, Rulhella Comslock, Belly Wuelhrich, Donna Mae Kreinbihl, Belly Rainsburg, Juanila Jones, Donna Long, and Ann Laws on her slaff. By lhal lime I began lo wonder il lhere were any men on her slaff al all. The arlicle menlioned lhal recenlly lhe paper had published a poem enlilled An Ode lo a Bullercup from a book of poems by Joanne Arn. In conneclion wilh lhis il added lhal lhe well-known poeless is soon lo be married lo Mayor Ansline of Chicago. I skimmed over lhe adverlisemenl for Four Roses and was confronled by lhe words: Life Goes lo a Premiere of Office Wife laken from lhe novel The Girl Wilh Plenly of Oomph by Mary Margarel Johnson. On lhe role of heroine was Jane Wenlz and opposile her, Dick Barger wilh Alberl Robinson as an imporlanl Page 24
