Q A 82 Track has proven itself a popular spring sport at Kenton. Many boys have reported both years. Last year an enviable record was set for future K.H.S. track- men to equal. In the pictures, Bob Bash may be seen receiving first place award for the javelin throw in the Central District Track Meet at Delaware. He is receiving the award from a group of charming Ohio Wesleyan Co-eds. Fred Sprang is also pictured wearing his honor ribbon for the mile run. Other good trackmen are: Stanley Wentz, Harold Strahm, Bob Nichols, Edwin Steiner, Jr. Detwiler, Ray Hatcher, Oliver Roach. 21. 83 FRANK ARNETT CLINTON KRAFT Basketball at Kenton High this year was marked by unfortunate illnesses, young players, and che sudden death of an outstanding player, Ward Ransdell. There is no desire on the part of any member of the squad nor the team as a whole to offer an alibi for the season's record. Not a boy quit the squad. Every loss was taken man- fully, and each victory brought a double measure of cheer to the players. Among the graduating seniors are: Frank Arnett, jack Holycross, James Eddy, Clinton Kraft, and the manager, Hugh Bryant. JACK KEITLE HOWARD FRIESNER JACK HOLYCROSS HUGH BRYANT, Manager MR. Rout'-Bob Moore, Bob Eberhart, Howard Fries- ner, joe Hathaway, Bob Nichols. The Freshman basketball team com- pleted a record of thirteen wins out of fourteen games played. They went on to increase this record, in defending their title in the district tournament held at South High School, Lima. The boys were coached by Mr. Noble. Nine victories were won over high school varsities, two over outstanding teams, Harpster and Edison. The latter was the only team able to defeat the Wild Kitties in the regular season, 31 to 30. Other wins were over York, New Dover, Ada, Harpster, Lima South, Lima Cen- tral, Tiffin Jr. Home, and Raymond. The team was built around three re- maining veterans of the 1937 champion- ship team, Dwight Ransdell, Ted Augur, and Bob West. Bill Roof, Bill Renfrew, Arnold Williams and jerry Wibbeler com.- pleted the regulars. The team played n fast break type of game, based upon the pivot. Ransdell lead the team in scoring, averaging 12 points a game, Augur was next with 9 and Roof averaged 7. The Kenton High second team, coached by Mr. Henkle, made an impressive record this year, winning 12 of its 14-game schedule. The players will make an admir-- able nucleus around which to build next year's varsity squad. Howard Friesner made a good captain. High point man was John McWilliams. Deft at taking the ball off the bankboard were Art Wells and Walter Getzinger. Cappy Eberhart and Bob Moore starred as ball handlers and floor men. It is not too much to hope for a championship team from this group in next year's competition. Bark Rout-jim Kerns, Loren Woodard, Mgr., John Arn, Serond Rau'-Mr. Noble, Don Biddinger, Kenneth Shawver, Gerald Wibbeler, Arnold Williams. Front Row-Dwight Ransclell, Bill Roof, Ted Augur, Bill Renfrew, Bob West. J. llll' u 1 - Here are the winners of the Western Ohio League Championship and their coach, Mr. Henkle, Only a heart-break- ing defeat from Toledo DeVilbiss stopped these sandlotters from state honors. Base- ball has always been a popular high school sport. Much credit is due Mr. Henkle, Who has sponsored the team for several years. Chief among this year's players are: John Barker, Bob Eberhart, Howard Friesner, Jack Kettle, Bob Moore, Bob Hart, Jack Holycross and Bill Thompson. 87 88 One of the outstanding phases of the athletic program is an extensive intra- mural program. With approximately sev- enty-five per cent of the boys participat- ing, the program has proven to be very popular with the student body, the bulk of whom have no opportunity in inter- scholastic athletics. Tied up closely with the physical education course are nine sports for competition. Soft-ball and vol- ley-ball occupy the spotlight in the fall, basketball, foulshooting, boxing, and wrestling in the winter, track, tennis, horseshoes, and soft-ball again in the spring. Mr. Henkle is intramural director and James Emmons intramural manager. Squad captains are members of the Varsity K, and this organization sponsors awards in the form of medals, ribbons, and plaques. 89 r X - -1 1 I , 'ilii , :a17i':!. .. A189 how swiftly the years pass by! How well we remember our eagerness and wonder when we were eighth graders, gaz- ing awed and amazed at the wonderful achievement of those that went before us. Little did we realize the blaze of glory that we were in a few years to leave be- hindg little did we foresee then, as you no doubt fail to see now, the fortunes and adventures that were to be ours. Our class of 1938 now relinquishes its famous for infamous! sovereighty in Kenton High Schoolg and it is you, who will compose the class of 1942, whom we are so eager to acquaint with the brilliant record which we leave behind. Since we see no immediate promises of equals, it is our hope that you, perhaps, may challenge our undisputed niche in the hall of outstanding class- es. First, allow us to review a few of our original and delightful personalities. There is our president, of course, Giles 'Stonewalln Jackson, who refused to be just another nfigure head' and led his classmates to a crushing and humiliating set back of our im ediate successors. You've heard of that!! Isaly's...on the square..surely you remember. And in the center of that doughty brawl , emerging with a scratched face, was that scrappy student, de- bator and Journalist, Kent nhoney boy Snyder. It is his unique art that adorns this letter. Nice, you say? Then there is Bob Mallow, nHuff-huffn to all those who know him. nHuff- huffn is champion medal wearer of the senior class, being a first rate orator lover, and hog- caller. Also we have H Tough-guy n Jennings , 4 N Rough-em-em-up n Ryan , uDing-dongn D1lle,nSh1ek' Edwards, who themselves could give any dozen he- men Cwell, anyway, two or three? a wicked evening of--well, what have you? Nor will Kenton High soon 100 forget such memorable figures KPersonalit1esJ as Susy Fink and Margaret Nourse, Babs and Bette Booth and Burnell, or Burnell and Booth--we never got that thor- oughly straightened out--the Kennell gals, the Lyle twins, the Misses Conover, Critchfield and Lotz, and Betty Moore, Gibson and Gerlach and Kahlor and Kahleyg and Louise, ah, yes, Louise Wentz, and--shall we go on? Just turn to the 1958 section and see for yourself. But perhaps you'd like to hear a word or two about the year of 1957-1958. Very well, shall we begin with football. Football Although fifteen players had graduated, and only seven lettermen returned, Kenton High battled through no ordinary season, the first on the new athletic field. When the final gun had sounded a pleasant 20 to O victory over London, the season's record stood as follows: Forest 6 Kenton 15 Urbana 20 Kenton 0 Bellefontaine 0 Kenton 20 Ada 12 Kenton 18 Wapakoneta 0 Kenton 25 Rossford 19 Kenton 15 Lima South 7 Kenton O Van Wert 6 Kenton 15 London O Kenton 20 Opponents 61 Kenton 22 In other words, though a few games were lost, we just doubled the score of our opponents. These husky gr1ddersKsee pages in Echolco-captained by Ollie Renfrew and Bob Bash, were banqueted at the Methodist Church November 18, where Coach Gauthier of Ohio Wesleyan University gave the principal address. Basketball Our luck was not so good in basketball this yearg that is, so far as the varsity was concerned, our luck was ill. But as for the freshmen, they won the district tournament at BOY' S Tdwn nwd thvnwvhnht thh l01 entire season lost but two games. The reserve squad, likewise, had the best season in years, winning eleven games of a thirteen game schedule. Coach Henk1e's boys played some of the finest reserve teams in this dis- trict too. A feature of athletics especially prominent this year was the spirited intra-mural program. Sponsering all sorts of athletic contests, the intra-mural pro- gram proved unusually interesting and gained the sup- port and participation of the majority of high school students. Winners of the intramural basketball tourney were the members of the Ollie Renfrew squad. The inter- class basketball tournament, which not a feature of this program, excited great interest.. The sophomores emerged as high school champions, defeating the seniors in a thrilling overtime game 30 to 29. Clubs But there are many other things which enliven high school besides athletics. There are many extra- curricular activities. A brief summary of'th1s year's activities will serve to display the prominence of the class of 1938 throughout the entire high school. First of all, there is the STUDENT COUNCIL, elected by the students, whose task it Is to run the student body and shout Heiln. Their emblem is not the swas- tika. The aforementioned nHuff-huffn Mallow was pres- ident of this worthy body. Don Jennings was v1ce-pres- identg Francis Rager, sec- retaryg and Margaret Lily 'Beauty-prize W Pulte , treasurer. A new program was tried this year by which the popular club dances were eliminated from the outside activ- ities. Substituted for these dances were informal dances at the armory, sponsored by different clubs, but open to the entire student body. A slight deficit in funds will be the worry of next year's council. The GIRL RESERVES , one of the largest organ- lizations in the high school, was presided over by an outstanding senior lass, Susy Fink, who, we 102 have frequently heard, did a swell job of presiding. Jo Orra Spring was vice-president, Myrtle Lotz,secre- taryg Betty Kennell, treasurerg Betty Gibson, social chairman, Jeannette Lyle, ring chairman, Mary Conover social chairmang Mary Claire Moore, publicity chair- mang and Virginia Grindell Sprang, Eleanor Jones, and Mary Long made up the program committee. The G.R's were advised by Miss White and Miss Johnson. President of the HI-Y was that popular actor and crooner, Cyrus Dille. Kent Snyder and Frank Arnett, two more wor- thy seniors, acted as vice-president and treasurer, re- spectively, of this group. Donald Hatcher was sec- retary. At the death of Ward Ransdell, Don Jennings took over the role of program chairman. Mr. Foraker was the adviser. The activities sponsered by these two clubs have been too numerous to mention. The DRAMATIC CLUBA selected as Its leaders three charming senior girls, Louise Wentz pres-3 identg Barbara Booth, vice-president, and Ann Koch, treasurer. Anne Bowman was secretary and Bob Morris was the club reporter. Besides many interesting meetings, this group staged a one-act play for Christmas chapel, Home for Christmas , and two other one-act plays in the spring. The members enjoyed two theatre par- ties throughout the year. Another club around the school, one that is closely connected with the ath- letic association, is the VARSITY K, which had as Its president this year Jack Holycross. As vice- e president of this athletic group was Bill Mauk, with Don Hatcher acting as secretary and Ollie Renfrew, treasurer. Among the organization's activities were the sponsoring of Dad's day in football, most valuable man awards for football and basketball, sponsoring of interclass athletic contests and Field Day at Lake Idlewild. Mr. Henkle is the Godfather of this group. Closely associated with the Varsity K is the GIRLS ATH- LETIC ASSOCIATION, who had Eleanor Jones as presidit Ehls year, and Helen Prybylski, vice-president. Ellen Keel served as secretary-treasurer. Class represent- atives were: seniors, Eleanor Lloydg juniors, Lucille Gannon: sophomores, Maxine Fitzpatrick. 103 Rural Groups The farm boys and girls have two unusually active clubs in Kenton High School. The FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA, sponsored by Mr. Robinson, cEose as their presfdent a likeable senior boy, Max Layman, to lead then through 1938. Other prominent seniors held of- fices in this club: 'Huff-huff' Mallow, vice-pres - identg Robert Hamilton, secretary: Marion Frederick, treasurer, Willard Crawford, banker, Joe Dick, ser- geantg Carl Greentree, lebrariang and Jesse Curt1s,re- porter. Frances Rager heads the FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF Amsnxcs. she was assisted by Ann Botcnlett as vibe- presldentg Lenna Haudenschieldg and Donna Long as treasurer. The faculty was represented by Miss Terrill and Miss Mueller. Professional Clubs ECHOETTE ,...... For those interested in special work, Kenton H1gh's extra-curricular program offers much. There is the PHY-CHEM club, this year headed By ... Bob Mallow I nHuff-huff :E ,- again! who we are all proud to say, did a splen- did piece of work. As vice-president of this group of physics and chem- istry students was Ann Kochg as secretary was Susy Finkg and as repor- ter, Virginia Grindell Sprang. Mr. Stine was ad- viser. Mr. Doughman's VOCATIONAL TRADES CLUB se- Q lected Andrew Donahue as its presidentg Jack Holy- xs Wx cross, vice-president, Donald Coons,. Secretary: Leon Cooper, treasurer, George Fink, student coun- cil representative: Richard Baldwin, reporterg and Cletus Schwartz, Oliver Roach, and Charles Mohn on the program committee. Ernestine Armentrout was president of the next professional group, the COMMERCIAL CLUB. Geraldine White and Mable Rader were vice-president and secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Sandborn was adviser. Journalism Kent Snyder is to be complimented upon his excell- ent piece of work as editor of the Echoette, both in 104 its printed and mimeographed form. Assisting Kent were Georgia Spurgeon, Anne Bowman, and James Bixler. On the business staff was Don Jennings, Ed Steiner, Bar- bara Booth and Bette Burnell. Miss Mentzer, who in- itiated a course in journalism this year, was adviser to this publication. In an entirely new and original manner, the Echo, which you now hold in your hand, was edited under the capable supervision of lar :ret Nourse. Jack Ryan, whom many have accused of buy a new suit out of the profits, labored hard and well to make financial ends meet. And it is to Bob Philips, the staff photographer, that the picturial success of this 1958 ECHO is due. Assisting Margaret were: Fern Amsler, Gertrude Philips, and Bob Morris. Donald Hat- cher and Wayne Wentz helped Jack Ryan. And Bob Philips had as his helpers Ed Kelly, Paul Shirk, and Bob Smith. Juanita Schindewolf was staff typistg Mr. Wilson was adviser. The entire book was planned and assembled at the editor's home. Now, have you an idea of high school life in Ken- ton High School for 1957 and 1958? We hope that you will like the four years in high school as well as we have. Furthermore, it is our sincere desire that you may leave behind a record of success and achievement somewhat comparable to ours. With best wishes we greet you as members of the class of 1942. May your name glow with favorable comparison to the class of 1938. Very truly yours, cgsfig 105' 5 Q J 1 -I W ' 1 106 l l ' I SENIOR ROSTER AMES, MARGARET G.
