Merrill Hall Constructed in 1912, Merrill hall was among the first buildings to con- stitute Kent State normal school. Its walls house classrooms for music, mathematics and history. English and philosophy classes also meet here. The first floor is the home of the school of journalism, with well-equipped offices for the various University publica- tions. Named for a member of the first board of trustees, the building contains the headquarters of Raymond E. Man- chester, dean of men. Newest of the Women's dormi- tories is Engleman hall, built in 1937. It was named for the late Dr. James O. Engleman, president of the University at the time con- struction was started. Accommo- dating 233 students, the dormitory is the home of upperclassmen. A large and modern lounge and a roof garden with an open fireplace are among its outstanding features. Equipped like a regular school, the building con- tains classrooms, an auditorium, a gymnasium, laboratories and offices. Grades run from kindergarten to the 12th grade inclusive.
