But when the 1932 season finally ended, the Golden Flashes found themselves at the bottom of the Ohio Conference ladder, with the seemingly incredible, and totally unimpressive record of five defeats and two scoreless ties. To add to the irony of the situation, Kent was unable to score a single point through the course of the schedule, while the opposition ran its total up to 80 points. Sports followers of the Flashes are of the opinion that Coach Merle Wagoner ' s eleven d isplayed the poorest brand of football imaginable, and that the team did not play its best. While this is true to a certain extent, those who saw all of the games were impressed by the fight which the Flashes put up, no matter how great the odds were against them. To the average student, the only thing that saved Kent from total disgrace was the scoreless tie with Akron U. After dropping their first three games at home, Kent took to foreign territory, starting off with the Zippers. .-Xlthough the Flashes were slated to lose, they JIM SHELLY Football Captain VARSITY FOOTBALL SQUAD FOOTBALL WOLFE Halfback DISBRO Halfback played the part of the underdog, and left the field with a moral vic- tory. Their fight was evident, since they held repeatedly when Akron threatened to score, but more impressive is the fact that they held a team which was heavier, 12 pounds to the man on the line and 24 pounds in the backfield. The season opened with Hiram ' s Terriers upsetting the Wagon- erites, 6 to 0, for Kent ' s first defeat on Rockwell field after three seasons with no losses on the local grid. The victory took with it the mythical Portage County collegiate title. The next week Otterbein invaded Rockwell field, and was expected to win easily. But the Flashes were improved, and appeared a great DUNLAVY Center TABORSKY Quarterback NICHOLSON End FOOTBALL RICE Quarterback LITTLEPAGE Fullback deal more organized as they held the Westervile aggregation on even terms for nearly three quarters. But a blocked punt, immediately followed by a touchdown, completely shattered the morale of the Flashes, and two lengthy runs gave Otterbein two additional tallies for a final score of 19 to 0. The Blue and Gold lost their third game of the season at honie the following week as Baldwin-Wallace trampled over the locals, 21 to 0. However, the Bereans scored all their points in the first half, and throughout the second half Kent outplayed their heavier opponents. The sensational scoreless tie against Akron followed the Baldwin- Wallace game, breaking the jin.x which had always meant defeat by SHELLY Tackle FOOTBALL CANIGLIA Tackle CIPRIANO Tackle NAPPI Guard the Zippers in the past. In this game the line showed up exceptionally well, constantly breaking through on both the offense and defense, and holding Akron three times within the five-yard marker and four other times inside the 25-yard stripe. Playing under the arc lights in Cleveland s new Municipal stadium only meant another defeat for the Flashes, this time a 28 to set-back by John Carroll. The next week at Columbus, Kent held the favored Fighting Lutherans of Capit TU. to a scoreless deadlock; but had the Flashes played heady football instead of throwing futile forward passes, they might have been able to discard the title of scoreless wonders . HOUSLEY End FLOWERS End FOOTBALL :t £ ' • ■%■HINKLE Guard K. TAYLOR Guard LANDIS Guard Ashland wound up Kent ' s disastrous schedule by trimming the Blue and Gold, b to 0, in a ragged punting duel that featured the Homecoming program on the Kent campus. However, Kent ' s men were still in there fighting, just as they had been doing all season, but the fact that Ashland had one of the strongest, heaviest, and most impenetrable lines encountered by the Flashes all season kept the fighting spirit from the eyes of the average fan. Coach Wagoner will lose several lettermen this year, but he will have many veterans available next fall, as well as an abundance of material from the 1932 Freshman squad. The lettermen who will not return include: Bill Disbro, Larry Nicholson, Jim Shelly, Kerm Taylor, Major Hinkle, and Don Housley. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL SQUAD [151] FOOTBALL 1932 Football Record K. John Carroll Capital Ashland Op. 6 19 21 28 6 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Coach Gus Peterka, in his first season as freshman football mentor, was met by a squad of b5 yearlings, most of whom remained in the group for the whole fall training period. Coach Peterka was greatly pleased with the faithful, willing, conscientious, willing to help spirit which was present during the regular practice sessions. Scrimmage was frequently held with the varsity and with Kent State High School. It is expected that many of the 1932 freshman team will furnish the varsity with a wealth of trained ma- terial when another season rolls around. [153] BASKETBALL •l I Basketball Season Review JPHI ! Kent ' s 1932-1933 basketball team Y l P i suffered a poor season, winning only 4  ■W 1 games out of 15 and ending up just two steps out of the cellar in the Ohio Conference standings. But the schedule was not without its highlights. The real sensation of the season undoubtedly was Al De Leone ' s long, arched shot as the final whistle sounded in the first Baldwin-Wallace game at Berea, a shot which enabled the Golden Flashes to defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 26-25, and thus snap a seventeen game losing streak. It looked as though the Flashes had completely gotten out of their slump as Fenn, which had previously defeated Kent, was set back 3 1-23 in the next game ; but once again a losing streak devel- oped, this time for four games. Then Hiram was defeated 28-27 as Joey Carl kept his eye on the basket in the critical minutes. After losing the next game to John Carroll, Kenyon lost to the Flashes 40- 30 for the fourth and final Kent win. Then Akron U. ' s classy Zippers showed themselves too strong and again Kent lost, 36-16. A visit to Cleveland brought another defeat, 33-29, as missed fouls by Kent pres;nted victory to Fenn. Along came Marietta to make it 17 straight losses for Kent. Then came the upset over Baldwin-Wallace. De Leone ' s long shot and the total of 19 points between Carl and Gerig featured the con- test. These two sharpshooters scored 18 the following week as Fenn was stopped in a return game. Once again numerous missed foul shots spelt defeat for the b lashes, this time by Kenyon, 36-33. Then along came the powerful Mt. Union quintet, and Kent put up the best fight of the season, despite Mount ' s high conference ranking, before being subdued, 42-27, Muskingum and Baldwin-Wallace won from Kent as the Flashes failed to convert numerous fouls. The freshman also played several preliminaries to home varsity games, including contests with various intramural teams. An excellent spirit was prevalent throughout the season, and mem- bers of the squad who return next year should put up a good fight for varsity berths. On March 28 the Germania Turnverein Vorwaerts of Cleveland gave an exhibition in Willis gymnasium, assisted by Burns, Glatzer and McKay of the Kent team. This exhibition drew a full gallery which gave ample proof that interest in gym work is rapidly growing and that the gym team is destined to become one of the features of Kent ' s athletic program. Among those performing for the Turners were Hennig, Olympic champion club swinger of 1904 and champion of the National Amer- ican Gym Union for the last fifteen years, and Carter, state high school champion tumbler.
