Slow poke Maynard Reyburn Class athlete and sportqman Harold Em ons Prettiest girl and Sandra Afton, Robe Handsomest boy rt Humpnreys Man hater and Woman hater Dorothy Gerwig, Darwin Nolda Speed demon Jack Coalter Class brain Virginia Hoogterp 6 1 r' 4 W ,mx CLASS HIbTORY As the class of '57 started out in l9hh, heading for the great day of graduation, it consisted of five members Vonda Anderson, Marilyn Cadwell, Hapgld Em gng, Roger McClurg, and George Udell Our teacher was Mrs Krepps In the iirst and second grades the same five remained, with Mrs Gibson as our teacher In the third grade we finally increased our number by five The new class mates were Terry Imkamp, James Johnson, Ronald Johnson, Leonard Hood, and Brian Wallace Mrs Gibson, still our teacher, took us on a train ride to 'White Cloud and we also entertained our mothers with a tea and a Dutch program Mrs Rayburn became our teacher in the fourth grade and Pat Hibbs ioined Mrs Reyburn remained our teacher in the fifth grade and we gained Rosalie Em ie P We started the sixth grade with six new students Delores Crouch, Edith Mortensen, Barry Robinson, Robert Rosenberger, Gloria Udell, and Virginia Volkema We also lost Leonard Rood and George Udell Mrs Denhof was OUP teacher in the sixth and seventh grades Sandra Afton, Bruce Hinman, Robert Humphreys, Bill Merchant, and Elaine Nelson joined us Mrs Denhof took US to the museum with the sixth grade In the eighth grade we started in the new highschool building with Mrs Stauffer as our adviser Our officers were Pres Sandra Afton, Vice Pres Robert Humphreys, Sec Virginia Volkema, Treas Bill Merchant, and Student Council members were Vonda Anderson and Roger McClurg we gained Ronnie Anderson, Lois Armstrong, Morris Cattanach, Jack Coalter, Linda Dauchy, Bill Hall, Margaret Harrison Shirley Harrison, Darwin Molda, Carol Osborn, Bett Pulte, Maynard Rayburn, and Virginia Volkema Carol Osborn left us InlWay Miss McLoed took us to Lansing to the capital, police post, and the college Beginning! the freshman year many new faces were seen Among these were Kaye Ames, Celia Austin, Connie Arnold, Nancy Coalter, Joe Darwin, Leon Dauch John DeVos, Dorothy Gerwig, Ethyl Gerwig, Mary'Hathaway,Edna Hoskins, Beverly Johnson, Marilyn Kern, Donald Landheer, Jerrv Luke, Danny Monda, and Arden Omens We lost Morris Cattanach, Bruce Hinman, Carol Price, Betty Puite, and Gloria Udell Our Class Officers were President Harold Emmons, Vice Pres Y: Council members Robert Humhpreys and Virginia Volkema, with Mr Williams as our adviser One of the hlghlights of our freshman year was the initiation The girls were dressed in their father's clothes and the boys were dressed in girl's clothes As we started our second year of highschool, Mr LaBrie was our adviser Our Student Council members were Roger McClurg and Kaye Ames Our officers were Edith Mortensen, President, Terrv Imkamp, Vice President, Sandra Afton, Secretary, Virginia Volkema, Treasurer We gained one student, Virginia Hoogterp, but we lost Celia Austin, Joe Darwin, John DeVos, Beverly Johnson, Marilyn Kern, and Arden Omens In this grade we were allowed to initiate the freshmen in the eleventh grade our class decreased by ten Those who left were Lois Armstrong, Nancy Coalter, Linda Dauchy, MaryHathaway Edna Hoskins, Jerry Luke, Danny Monda, Bob Rosenberger, Virginia Volkema, and orma Westphal One of our favorite class parties, was an ice skating party at Long Lake Here three of the girls got poison ivy The highlight of the junior year was our rom, which was called'Hawaiian.Evening Our class officers consisted of Pres Roger McClurg, Vice Pres Virginia Volkemas Sec Ronnie Johnson, Treas Harold Em ons and Student Council members Sandra Afton and Robert Humphreys Mr LeBlanc was our adviser In our last and final vear Mr Cochrane is our adviser Our student Council membePS are Edith Mortensen and Ronald Anderson Our class officers are Pres Robert Humphreys, Vice Pres Sandra Afton, Sec Kaye Ames, and Treas Vonda Anderson In November we had our class play, 'Where's Charlieu We are looking forward to the Prom May 15 17 is the senior trip to Chicago Our baccalaureate is May 26 and the following Tuesday, May 28 is graduation We the class of '57 are very proud to graduate from Kent Cith High School We would like to thank our parents and teachers for the help and guidance they have given us in our years at Kent City High School use 0 J . S' 'f ' ACTION East end View 233932 01113 South side View THE FIELD HOUSE Our community reco nized the need for a field house about a year and a half ago Some intereste business men of this community and Casnovi agreed the Kent City Bank board room and set up a finance committee This committee was composed of the following people Robert Kriger James Moffatt Carl Peterson Harry Shirey These men raised approximately 32,000 by subscription The school sold blocks at Sl O0 each and raised four hundred dollars more The committee for the construction of the building was made up of l Mr The most of the labor for the ion Company donated steel doors The faculty men and the Lions labor Various groups from the Lawrence williams Ralph LeBlanc Harold Emmons Maurice Cochrane project was donated locally Gust Construct and frames and labor for block laying Club members also contributed many hours of high school also put in time on due project Two people who did a great deal more than their fair share on this project are Mr Howard Smith and Mr Ben Lucht, Sr These two spent more hours than any others we wish to express our thanks for their efforts Lawrence Mattson furnished our plumbing fixtures at cost and also donated much of the labor for their installation Harold Fmmons donated the wiring and labor for the building. This field house is a very spacious building with dimensions of 25 x MS. It has two locker rooms, one shower, two rest rooms, an office, and a store room.
