Home base for the more than two thousand students who daily explore the world around them, looking at the past, considering the present, and peering into the future. The telescopes, micro- scopes, and even the window panes through which we look have their platforms in Kensington. But Kensington is more than ideas, it is experiences. It is Security- in knowing where the Clinic is. It is Fear- of being crushed on the center stairs and not recuperating in time for class. It is Superstition- the dread of stepping on the Compass. It is Numbers- football scores and report cards. It is Excitement- a home run and the announcement of the high point winner on Girls, Letter Day. It is Rivalry- the irreverant cheering as the Bennett Spy is loaded into the coffin. It is Unity- the voluntary participation in club projects. Kensington is what every school is-an institution of learning, of developing character, of growing individuals, and a memory forever cherished by all those who pass within its walls. But we see it in a special light, for Kensington is what we make it. ,,,...Q,,,....,..,..- . :sq New ,1- HPQ5 X ls Q 1 w 3 9' . sq DEDICATIO Kensington is dedication-the kind that is displayed by our faculty and administrators. In appreciation for his leadership and service to Kensington, we, the graduating class of 1968, dedicate this COMPASS to Coach Ralph Duquin. During his twenty years at Kensington, Mr. Duquin has coached our track and cross-country teams on to nine Scalp and Blade and three Columbia Cup championships. His encourage- ment has been a constant inspiration to these teams in both victory and defeat. With the help of Mrs. Duquin, annual cook- outs are organized for the teams to reward them for their efforts. This year at Letter Day the Harriers presented their own All- High Coach Awardn to him. He is equally admired in the role of educator. During regular school hours, Mr. Duquin is an instructor of physical education and health. The Duke is the hero of B-lunch, where, with his trusty whistle, he saves us from chaos. Each year in these paragraphs we honor an outstanding ed- ucator at Ken, whose enthusiasm and dedication are contagious. These qualities rub off on his students and on new faculty members, they have served as an incentive to his own daughters, all active Kensingtonians until their graduation. For the victories, for his inspiration, and for his enthusiasm, Kensington High salutes Coach Duquin. 6 T BLE OF CCDNTENTS Theme 4 Dedication 6 Administration 8 Classes 26 Seniors 32 Juniors 76 Sophomores 84 Freshmen 92 Activities 1 00 Athletics l 30 Advertising 1 5 8 7 .. ANGELO GIANTURCO PRINCIPAL To the Student Body: Your yearbook, Compass '68, has as its theme, Ken- sington is . . . . Objectively, this theme is effectively portrayed in the numerous pictures which illustrate the broad spectrum of campus activities at Kensington High. Kensington is all of these experiences and much more. It has many facets impossible to register on film. Kensington is primarily a spirit,,, which manifests itself in many ways. It is the support you give to worthwhile causesg it is your friendly and courteous manner. It is your respect for the rights of others, your self-discipline and re- sponsible behavior. It is your sense of fairness and loyalty. Kensington is also your deep feeling of school pride, your appreciation of its fine building and secure atmosphere. Kensington is devoted teachers who insist on high scholastic standards and strong character development. It is a varied curriculum which prepares you to assume .a worthwhile role in our society. Kensington is four academic years of your teen-life, en- riched by the traditions and achievements of an illustrious past. For years to come, the ideals and standards of your Alma Mater will be a source of inspiration and confidence to you. Kensington is, figuratively speaking, your compass. Angelo J. RINO The Community Association of Kensington High School is the link which connects the home with the school, and serves to strengthen the communication lines between the parents and teachers. Through bulletins distributed to the students, the members of the Community Association inform concerned parents of their programs and plans. Among its projects this year, the Community Association sponsored its traditional Pot- Luck Supper and provided refreshments at Parent's Night. It also awards a one hundred dollar scholarship annually to a promising senior. This year as a special service to upper- classmen and their parents, the Community Association presented a panel discussion, Where to After Graduation, at its January meeting. Guests on the panel were represent- atives from four local colleges. Through its active efforts from September until June, Communications lines were never down. We, the student body, our parents, and the administration of Kensington thank them for this. 24 I MEMCDRIAM Our hearts mourn the passing of a man who contributed much to Kensington High School. Wilbur E. Unger, Assistant Principal from 1962 to 1966, was a dedicated admin- istrator and a fine person. Although he was by nature somewhat quiet and conservative, Mr. Unger made many friends during his stay at Ken. He supported enthusiastically all activities and was a familiar face at assemblies and athletic events. He distinguished him- self to such a degree that he was appointed Project Administrator for the Teacher Aide Program in Buffalo, a Federal program to aid poverty areas. Although only for a few short years, Kensington was indeed fortunate to have on its staff a person as capable and outstanding as Mr. Unger. rf- Death also comes for the young. For Susan Marie Hooper, life ended tragically in an automobile accident early in September. Sue was an Honor Student and an active Ken- singtonian, participating in many sports and extra curricular activities. Her ever-radiant smile reflected a warm personality which endeared her to those she knew. Her life was rich and her future bright. A senior, Sue would have graduated this year and faced a new world of challenges and responsibilities. However, death intervened and a promising futute was left unrealized. This was clearly a great loss to Sue's family and friends, and perhaps too, the world lost a bit of brightness. Yet for Sue Hooper, all that remains is lasting happiness and peace. Farewell, whose living life I shall not find, whose Faztlz and Work were bells offull accord .... 25 'W w1fk, ' ...M W M W .,m -W-M-M-ff- W , , G1 - A , vnu - ,, ,pf I ,, , ,NM 7 w K K .- f 2 1 , MMIW, I T.. Little did they know what was ahead. Entering a large homeroom we were encountered by many un- familiar faces as well as piles of forms upon forms to fill out. Our first big event was the Freshman Halloween Dance on October 30, where Chris Kramer and Chet Owens won the door prizes. The football season opened with several of our Freshmen men playing on the J. V. squad. These were: Duane Hewson, Denny Burns and Carmen Mitri. For the 1965 Drill Team, Valerie Hughes and Pat Hogan were among the girls chosen to march during half time at the football games. Also, Prudy Celeste, Donna Eno and Jeanne Truax made the J. V. Cheerleading Squad for 1965. Class Elections turned out to be successful. Ron DiGiore, president, Sandy Burger, vice-president, Cathy Cleveland, secretary, and Tim Clark, treasurer. As Sophomores, we were a little more confident and hard-working, but nevertheless we were still Underclassmen. Karen DiPirro, Paulette Vergos and Jo Ann Kushner were some of the Sophomores that joined with the Yearbook Staff to help turn out a successful edition of the COMPASS . June Thompson and Nick Beaver were among our Class Officers for 1966. Jim Steg and Tom Weld, combined their talents and started a folk singing group known as NEWPORT TRIO . Some of our Student Council Delegates were: Linda Smith, Bobbie Herr, and Dawn Huber. Leading our class scho- lastically were Esther Herrmann, Marcia Greatrix, Elaine Boczarski and Lois Borkowski. November 21 and 22, brought the Annual Water Show entitled STORY- BOOK LAND with Alana Kaczmarski, Cathy Crane, Sue Lex and Cindy Gruber as some of our Sophomore stars. Many of our clubs had Sophomores as their officers. Some of these were: Debby Porterfield, Ken Boosters, and Pat Berebko, F.T.A. 74 Our Junior Year opened immediately with Student Council Delegates chosen, Kandy Beane, Sue Tufo, Rae Ann Campagnola and Lee Hobel were some of our Junior leaders. Several of our clubs were led by Junior students such as Dave Schneider, Red Cross Club, and Liz Visone, French Club. Many Juniors brought music to our ears through band and orchestra. Bob Vezina, Dave Ernst, Angel Smith and Kathy Fish were some of our talented group. J. V. Football this year was quite unsuccessful, yet we had Mike Ivers, Dennis Kaluzny, Art Richter and Don Fell fighting for us. Cross Country this year brought to light many Jun- ior stars. Ron J akubowski and Mike Maksymik helped to attain our All-High fifth placing in finals. In Varsity swimming, Greg Brennan, Don Pecoraro, and Glen Hobel displayed their prowess and style in swimming and helped our team to win three meets. May 19th, the Spotlights were on all of us at the Junior Prom in the gym. The theme was Evening in Athens and we all glided across the floor to the music of Joe Santora's band. The next month was filled with cramming for exams and planning for our Senior year that we all managed to reach finally. Well, here we are on the last stretch and for many of us it is just the end of a beginning, college. What a wonderful feeling it is to be the leaders of the school! Many exciting things have happened, not the least of which was the annual Variety Show on March 8th, entitled People , where some Senior Professionals were seen performing. Our host and hostess were Jim Sheldon and Linda Messina. Other stars included Liz Fischer, Jackie Kemp and Jackie David. Margaret Latko and John Peters won class offices in the elections held in March. Our rings finally came! After the Faculty-Varsity Basketball Game the Faculty was forced to show its true colors in the end: Black and blue. April brought plans for the Senior Prom the Paper Drive and Graduation. All things considered, we can all say that this has been a memorable step in our careers as students. Our Alma Mater is everything that we have made it and in every sense of the idea. WE are Kensington. 75 CLASS OFFICERS-Row I: K. Latko fGir1s Mar- shallj, A. Bauer CSecreta.ryJ, A. Bergstrom CVice Presidentg Row 2: A. Thomasula fBoys Marshallj, H. Burger fTreasurerJ, J. The aims of the Student Council were to establish better student-faculty relations, to assist in school programs and problems concerning students, to inform and interest the T u D E T community in the social functions of the school, and to main- tain school spirit. Sixty-five delegates held monthly meetings to discuss and plan activities at Ken. Miss Marie Maida and Miss Helen Fritz were the faculty advisors of the Council. Attending several meetings were Miss Mary Ann Biennas and C0 LI N C I I- Mr. Richard Ford, representatives from the Kensington YMCA. They headed a brainstorming session in October centering a- round the problems of area youth and what can be done to solve them. The first major porject of the year was the collection of clean and usable outgrown clothing for the Save the Children Federation. The Bundle Days in mid-November were a tre- mendous success, with the goal of twenty-four bags more than doubled. Co-Chairmen Kandy Beane and Bob Croce super- vised the Drive. The Student Council delegates lent their support to the Red Cross Club membership drive, which resulted in eighteen IOOZJ homerooms and a total of 732 of the student body contrib- uting. Again offering community service, they aided the Lions' Club in their annual White Cane Drive. Students went out in the bitter cold to collect over a hundred dollars for this wor- thy cause. Good Grooming Week culminated in the selection of the best-groomed boy and girl in each class. Candidates who were chosen in homerooms on November 27 were judged, and the winners announced at an assembly on December 1. Other activities carried out by the Student Council included the sale and distribution of the Ken Key Notes , the Green Carnation Sale on March 15, a St. Patrickls Day Dance, and a Traffic Safety program. They also worked to plan a Faculty- l Varsity Basketball Game and a dance in May. These six days, climaxed by the big game of the season with our archrival Bennett, clearly proved that they had succeeded. The week got off to a noisy start with The Happening , as students, encouraged by the cheerleaders and members of the Ken Boosters carrying picket signs, gathered behind the school to cheer the Knights. The mood changed from mysterious expectation to nervous anticipation on Tuesday. After school on that day, the sixteen girls who had been nominated in senior homerooms for Queen of Ken-Bennett Week were judged by ten faculty members in the auditorium. Preparations for the day were being made as early as Octo- ber 27, when the actual nominations took place. All can- didates had to meet specific qualifications: A nominee had to have a pleasing personality, she had to be industrious, reliable, cooperative, and popular with both students and faculty. The teachers who made up the panel then rated the girls on the basis of poise, her goals for the future, and her ability to answer questions under firen. On Wednesday, school spirit was really shown by all the students and faculty, as they searched their closets for something green and gold to wear. Thursday nightis dance was highlighted by the crowning of Cathy Cleveland as Queen of Ken-Bennett Week. The results of the judging had been held in strict confidence for two days, with only a handful of people knowing who would be given the honor. If we win, maybe we'll get to do a T.V. commercial too! Win or lose, we're proud to be in that number. The prizes awarded to Cathy included a dozen long- stemmed American Beauty roses, two dinner tickets from the Swiss Chalet restaurant, a portrait certificate, and a cake, compliments of Smolinskiis bakery. Also honored were Melanie Musial, Karen DiPirro, and Jane Kubacki, the members of her court. After the crowning, all attending danced to the music of The Restlessn. At 2:45 on Friday, instead of rushing home, many Ken- singtonians attended a pep rally in the gym. The week's activities were concluded on Saturday, as a motorcade led by the Queen and her court, transported some students to the game at All-High Stadium. At two o'clock, our Knights met Bennett's Tigers on the football field in what proved to be a rough but exciting game, and an appropriate ending to an exciting week. The Mistress and Master of Ceremonies, Linda Messina and Jim Sheldon, were joined by special guest' Lou Lorenzo for clever, sometimes in- tentionally corny, comedy between the acts. Student soloists professionally presented, vocally and instrumentally, a cross-section of modern American music, with themes from recent movies and Broadway shows playing a primary role. I Won't Grow Up was sung by a stageful of Kenis in-residence hippies, who later had a run-in with the Peanuts gang. The Big City Organization and The Restless were on hand with psychedelic vibrations. Dancers presented an equally varied program, from a traditional Spanish dance to modern jazz. The Charleston, Can'Can, Mambo, and soft shoe were all part of the evening's entertainment. In skits, Raggedy Ann and Andy survived temporary separation and were happily reunited in Toyland, the passengers danced on board the Good Ship Lollipop, and The Frog Prince was given a slightly fractured ending. Drama was represented in the reading of a scene from an O'Neil1 play. , , , Rose and Stanley make a clean sweep Ken's Own Sugar Plums 106 W' ,mf-wr' -g f MT 5' X D 2 V ,,,,. Beatty The SCIENCE CLUB, which appeared on the Kensington scene for the first time this year, provided students with interesting and informative scientific programs. Trips to the Cornell Laboratory and the Aquarium in Niagara Falls were among those organized with the assistance of Mr. James Cadwell, the faculty advisor. The CHESS CLUB, which could easily be called the quietest club in the school, met this year with the guidance of Mr. Ronald Zack. The Club represented Ken well in inter- scholastic meets, winning two tournaments. The emphasis at monthly meetings of the FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA was on education, and Mrs. Doris Nagel and the members learned much from their guest speakers. Among them were a representative of the Erie County Public Health Depart- ment, several nursing students from the University of Buffalo who gave a first aid demonstration, and Sgt. Kincaid of the Army Nurse Corps Recruiting Office, who showed films and distributed literature describing the opportunities open to students in Army nursing. CHESS CLUB-L. Jeffries, L. Witul, G. Bauer The HISTORY CLUB met this year with Miss Marjorie Linhardt to discuss the problems facing our community and our world. Councilman - at- Large Edward Regan attended the first meeting and spoke on the Problems of the City. The Club took a field trip to the Erie County Jail to help them understand a major concern of the county: its penal system. To learn about the worldis problems, a talk by a former Peace Corps Volunteer to the Philippines was sched- uled, and the members became participants in the Model U.N. Assembly to voice their opinions. The FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA, under the direction of Mr. Rocco Lucci, worked to instill in Kensington students a sincere interest in teaching as a profession. To achieve their goal, eight members attended the Future Teachers of America Conference in Batavia. There they heard lectures on such topics as Teaching in the Peace Corps , Non-graded High School , and Specialization at the Elementary Level . As a service to Kensington, FTA members acted as guides on Parents, Night. F.T.A.-B. Karnath, B. Milward, T. Polanski, P. Berebko, L. Preston, C. Mr. David Sarata has supervised weekly sessions at Glenwood Acres Ski Area. Somehow the members of the club have man- aged to survive the blustery weather that was a part of many of their ten weeks of lessons. The accomplishments of the SPANISH CLUB this year were perhaps more obvious to the rest of the student body than those of any other. On December 15, the club presneted an assembly revolving around the people of Mexico and their history. A Visit to Mexico , produced and directed by Mr. Michael Trit- to, was highlighted by a mock bullfight and included historical skits, songs, and Latin dances. Also, as a group, they attended Spanish Night at Kleinhans Music Hall, a concert given by the Philharmonic Or- chestra. 'WW 'Kaur SKI CLUB-Row 1: T. Schroeder, J. Schwec, P. Berebko, D. Kurdziel, E. Smith, D. Grazcyk The purpose of the GERMAN CLUB, which meets under the supervision of Mr. Carl Berner, is to involve pupils in creative activities revolving around German culture. The activities of the club this year ranged from Karneval , a masquerade with folk dancing, to showing and telling about life in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany through the use of colored slides. The Oktoberfest was a traditional banquet at which tantalizing German dishes were served, and the Advent season was complete with lighted wreath and carols. Through the continued efforts of the KENSINGTON RED CROSS CLUB to coordinate their services, Ken students brought joy to a children's home by giving them a Valentine party, brought aid and comfort by sending a school chest to a disaster area, brought a little cheer by sending mounted cartoons to soldiers in Vietnam, and brought to its members the satis- faction of a job well done. All of these projects were carried out under the direction of Miss Doris Flierl. The ITALIAN CLUB promotes the speaking of that language outside of class and provides its members with cultural knowledge of Italy and its people. At their meetings, slides of Italy were shown, customs were stud- ied, and members joined in learning the traditional folk songs and carols of the country. At Christmas time, Mrs. Anita Militello, the club sponsor, helped to organize a party which featured fancy Italian pastries, ice cream, candy, and the singing of carols to greet the Christ Child. ll7 ITALIAN CLUB-Row 1: L. Visone, J. I I The purpose of the KENSINGTON CHAPTER OF THE JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE is to acquaint its members with the contributions of Roman Cul- ture, and to study other aspects of this civilization which are not covered in regular Latin classes. The activities of the club encompass education, service, and participation. At one meeting, Mrs. Smithls slides of Italy, taken last summer, were shown, and the Buffalo Evening New Crippled Children's Camp re- ceived their contribution. This group was an active part of the Junior Classical League State Convention which was held at Kenmore West Senior High School. LATIN CLUB-P. Hogan, P. Braid, P. Vergos 1 Ai This year, the main project of the STUDIO CLUB was a large Christmas tree done in the stained glass technique, which dominated the center windows of the school, and reached from the second to the fifth floors. It was lit up every night as Ken's Christmas card to the communityf' Exhibits for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas dis- played in the case in the front hall were also Studio Club projects. This year Kensington has something new-a literary maga- zine. The goal of the staff of the KEN KALEIDOSCOPEN was to compile a magazine reflective of the creative and imaginative thinking of Ken students. Each student had the opportunity to submit his work for publication, which came ir1 Spring, 1968. This magazine, it is hoped, will be- come a tradition at Kensington. The faculty advisor, Miss Kathleen Kreis, and the entire staff, have put much effort into making it a success. STUDIO CLUB-Bottom: R. Archambeault, D. Beaty, J. Ruhlingg Top: S. Nalesynski, D. The appreciation of the values of mathematics is the main goal of the MATH CLUB. This purpose has led to programs and presentations including games, mathematical tricks, and topics requiring study and research which cannot be taken up in the classroom because of lack of time. Under the supervision of Mr. Lucci, the Boosters were able to charter buses to basketball games and swim meets. They also sponsored a dance for St. Patrick's Day. The FRENCH CLUB encourages an understanding, appreciation, and en- joyment of the typical customs of the French through entertainment. Guignol, a puppet whose mischievous escapades are comparable to those of our Punch and Judy, made his appearance at the first meeting. Skits and songs, organized by Miss Catherine Valente, were an integral part of both holiday celebrations: Christmas, and Kings' Day , which was celebrated on January ll. One of the favorite parts of these festivals was, of course, the serving of traditional French desserts, la biiche de Noel , and la galette des Rois . Miss Ann Maloney was again this year the faculty advisor for the KEY NOTES STAFF, which published and put into circulation six editions of the KEN KEY NOTES . Regular sections of this publication are Among Our Student Authorsv and Along the Ken Lines , which are featured in every issue and reflect the achievements of the student body. The staff received a blue ribbon for last year's Key Notes at the Buffalo Evening News-sponsored Western New York lnterscholastic Press Association Con- ference, a success which they hope to repeat. Sheldon STAGE CREW and UDIO-VISUAL STAFF The Stage Crew is seldom seen by the students and faculty attending assemblies at Kensington, but their efforts and teclmical ability are as important for the success of each production held on our stage as the quality of the program itself. Among the programs they worked hard to produce, in addition to the weekly double assemblies, were the Variety Show, the Spring Concert, and it's Academic , all of which required the use of special effects. The behind-the-scenes heroes are responsible for the lighting, spotlight operation, projection, audio equipment, and the handling of stage props. The efficient and dedicated staff works under the the direction of Mr. David Sarata. Another group that is not always seen but is greatly appreciated is the Audio-Visual Staff. This group, with the direction of Miss Clara Panzica, is responsible for the opera- tion and maintenance of projectors for educational films shown in the classrooms. They also operate the tape re- corders and record players when teachers request them. The use of these audio and visual techniques aids the student in comprehending the ideas of a course. The faculty as well as the students of Kensington expresses its gratitude to them for this. STAGE CREW-G. Ruff, C. McCarthy, L. Eichelberger, B. Napierella STAGE CREW-B, Susczinski, G. Groeger, G. Milward MCD ITORS A sense of responsibility is an important quality which every student who serves as a monitor in any of the offices or in the halls at Kensington must possess in order to do his job efficiently and well. In the Guidance Office, the monitors assist primarily in the clerical work, filling out appointment slips and categor- izing materials, records, and other information. This frees the counselors to consult with students and help them to plan their futures. Monitors in the clinic aid the nurse by writing slips, weighing students, taking temperatures, and cleaning instruments. Library monitors are responsible for charging books, straightening shelves, and collecting fines for overdue materials. Through their assistance to the clerical staff, monitors in the main office gain valuable secretarial experience. They prepare the daily absence lists, help with typing and filing, and make phone calls to the homes of absent students. Hall monitors are students who have maintained good records of attendance and punctuality, and who are willing to re- linquish their study halls. They serve by keeping unauthor- ized persons out of the halls and by directing visitors who are unfamiliar with our school to their destinations. Activ- ities Office monitors are busy before and after school selling supplies to students. They are especially busy during football season, when they punch activities tickets and sell tickets for the games. AUDIO-VISUAL MONITORS-B. Leiser, G. Adams, M. Daniels, M. A. Rath, S. Kensington is very fortunate to be one of the few high schools in the City of Buffalo which has an orchestra. Under the direction of Mr. Carlton Wagner, the sixty-four mem- bers of the orchestra met twice a week during first period. Practice sessions such as these help establish a rhythm and a harmony which are the result of hard work alone. For each year's participation, the student earns one-half of a Regents credit. This year, as in the past, the orchestra played selections for the Thanksgiving and Latin American assemblies. They also provided the music for Junior Day and for graduation night at Kleinhans Music Hall. Mr. Wagner again conducted the orchestra for its perfor- mance in the annual Spring Concert. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the seventy-two members of Kensington's band diligently rehearsed with Mr. Wagner the music to be played at assemblies. These students played the march music, pep songs, and an occasional selection for assemblies, including the Christmas program. Our school was represented well in the All-High Band, with twelve Kensingtonians participating. Row 1.' J. Kushner, J. Bradley, S. Milbrandt, D. Ernst, D. Beuerman, Miga, Row 4: M. Lee, R. After splitting the first triangular meet it appeared as if we were goint to have a contending team. Although we lost three meets by a small margin we were in everyone until the last Harrier crossed the finish line. Led by Captain Jim Sheldon the team compiled a record of five wins and six defeats. In the All-High run our team finished a respectable fourth making it possible for a fifth finish in the place overall standing. This year we had many promising runners including Captain-elect Dick Krawjewski and All-High com- petitors Dave Henninger, Ron Jakubowski, Frank Boza, Jeff Cook, Dave Wessel, and Larry Ladowski. Next year the cross-country team should have matured into a serious threat to dethrone the champions of South Park. Ist Row: R. Jakubowski, D. Henninger, D. Krajewski, J. Sheldon, Whalen, K. 'IWW Things were different this year as the Ken Knights downed the ferocious Faculty Flyers with a score of 59-54. After their dress rehersal last year, the well- conditioned Varsity was totally prepared for the on- slaught of Faculty antics. Even the surprise appear- ance of our own Calvinl, Murphy couldn't shake them. The Black and Blue cheerleaders didnlt quite meet their match when pitted against the seasoned Varsity cheerleaders, but what they lacked in volume was made up in spirit. Half-time was highlighted with an act from the tumbling team and a l-o-n-g rest period for the Faculty Flyers.
