For on this bright, sunny, spring day, a bouncing baby girl came to bless this household! Little Karen's sunny disposition was evident from the very start. She gurgled and cooed at everyone. On one September morning in her sixth year, Karen was up at dawn for this was the clay she started School- Karen liked school very much and was always right up among the top students in her classes. Looking at the musical background of her family, Karen didn't have much choice but to follow in their footsteps and she fit those shoes very well. She loved to sing! She used to wake her folks up in the early morning hours with her rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Widdle Star. After finishing grade school Karen en- tered Kensal High. She likes to try anything that's fun! Her favorite sport is basketball. She loves mov- ies too, her favorite being Calamity Jane and she claims that Gregory Peck just sends her! Her favorite pastime is talking and she just adores French fries. She plans to enter the nursing profession after gra- duation and with all of her talent and pe rsonality, we can foresee a most successful future for her. Y VONNE FR IDAY On the day of November 4, 1936 a precious little bundle was left at the Friday home in Nashua, Minne- sota. This little bundle was Yvonne Marie. When Yvonne was five years old she started school at Veblen, South Dakota. When she was in the fourth grade she moved to Kensal where she finished the grades and is now a senior in high school. Yvonne has been a leader all through her school years. She has held the offices of president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer, in high school. She has sung in the school chorus and has taken part in many ofthe sports throughout the year. She has held many posi- tions on the paper staff and is now the editor of the annual. Yvonne's favorites are: Food---chicken 81 dumplings: actor---Robert Wagner, actress ---June Allyson, sport ---kittenballg subject---algebra. Her favorite pastime is rollerskating. Yvonne's ambition is to become a registered nurse, and even though she is a tiny little girl, we know she will be very successful. 11 if Ti! 1,55 ij Z I bo- ,rf . 1 J 4 I ' I z Y. 1 5' 2, ., ,,,.,14 A,,. Marlene wants Marlys Holm to have interesting reading for a while so she wills her love letters to her. Jim Neva will be the one to receive her sweet temperament. Gordy feels that Allen will really make use of his high grades in geometry, and he wills his basketball ability to Richard. Eugene Briss feels very generous so he wills his charm to Jim Neva and his class ring to Shirley Fredrickson. Carol wills her big feet to Phyllis McGuire to give her a good understanding. Karen has a variety of boy friends that she is willing to Marlys Holm and she wills her singing ability to Betty Scott. Patty Krubeck wills her steady company to Moneen Ableidinger and her charming siriile to Shirley Fredrickson. Betty, you are the one to whom Yvonne Friday wills her tinyness. She thinks that John Snow will make good use of her high grades. Clarice Spitzer wills her meanness to Marlys Holm, so beware!! Moneen Ableidinger is the lucky girl to inherit her piano playing ability. Janice Neva tells us that she is willing her quietness to John Snow and her common sense to Allen Seibert. Sandra Spitzer wills her slight figure to Shirley Fredrickson and her basketball abi- lity to Phyllis. John Snow is going to be the one to receive Bob's height and Shirley Frecrickson will inherit his ability to eat. To the teachers we will all the highmarks we got in our tests and our high LQ. 's. To the juniors as a class we will our worn out books, our chewed pencils, and all the explosives in the science room. To Einar we will all the wads of paper that we threw behind the radiators and the pic- tures we drew on the tops of the desks. To Ann, our cook, we will all the dishes we dirtied and any of the loose crumbs that she may find on the flOO1'- Advice Betty: You should eat some more Hollywood bread. It helps! Phyllis: Watch your figure so that it doesn't swing away. Milton: Pick up some of the Kensal girls instead of the ones out of town. Some of them think you're handsome. Marlys: Come to Kensal and see some of the boys once in a while. Moneen: Don't hang on to Cleon so tightly. Give some of the other boys a chance. After all, Richard's been trying for quite a while. Shirley: We think that there are other fish in the sea. After all, Eugene won't be around here next year. Allen: Yould better settle down and get to work because we want you to be one of those sophisticated seniors next year. Jim: Take it easy on the Nlercury. You might have to use it next year. Donit be too hard on those grade girls. lSe-venth grade.j Richard: You shouldn't be so hasty in voicing your opinion all of the time. CLASS PLAY OF '53-'54 Saved by the Belle was presented on a stormy evening of November 20, 1953. It was a farce three-act play, which was sure to prove a great favorite with high schools, junior high schools, and other groups of young people, for with only one exception, the charac- ters are all in their teens. They were as follows: House Mother--Carol Spitzer, Warren Sands --Bob Cfoehringg Slugger O'Day--Haakon Ekreng Jackie Clark--Gene Briss, Members of the sorority house Clarice Spitzer, Sandra Spitzer, Karen Burleson, Yvonne Friday, Janice Neva, Pat Kru- beck, and Marlene Schroeder, Voice on the radio--Gordon Lambrecht. BANQUET- PROM' The junior-senior banquet was held May lei, 1953, at the Methodist Church parlors. A delicious dinner of chicken and all of the trimmings was served at 6:30 P. M. by our mothers. The rOOrTi Was CleCOr-ated with a Hawaiian atmosphere of palm trees and colored strea- mers. Miss Patty Krubeck was M.C. The Prophecy and Will of the Class of '53 was read by Ruth Turner. Other program numbers were a vocal solo by Karen Burleson and a piano duet by Clarice and Carol Spitzer. Six sophomore girls dressed in Hawaiian fashion waited tables. Everyone in formal dresses and dinner jackets had a very enjoyable time. Later that evening the prom was held at the gymnasium. Here again, the setting was Hawaiian and the effect of the gay streamers, palm trees, and the sandy beach with soft music from Burleson's orchestra floating on the breeze was most entrancing. The evening was complete with program dancing, punch, and tidbits to munch on. Everyone had a gay time and reluctantly drift- ed homeward with stars in his eyes and memories that will never be forgotten. at Q' 57, f'e- 3 e .2 Ei ' Jya fu-l ij 15 -'xr if' 1-,A JI I Senior Class Prophecy Here it is, 1954, and twelve ambitions looking graduates are about to start down the long road of life. Will they be successful? someone asks. Well, now, that's a hard question to answer, but having known them all so well through their school years l'm game to make some prophecies. First, we'll have to shift our prophetical minds, say about, fifteen years ahead to 1969. That ought to give them plenty of time to be successfully settled, we hope. Our next problem is transportation. 'Let's go by air- plane, someone suggests. Gracious, how ancient! Let's hop in my super-sonic atom powered space-mobile. Our first stop is Oklahoma. Who is that we see off in the distance? Why, it's Gordon Lambrecht, surrounded by a herd of cattle! Gordon tells us that he is a success ful cattle rancherg and in his own words he states Wal, I owe it all to the little 'missus and our thirteen kids who have pushed me on to success! ! Good luck, Gordy! May your herd Qof cattlej grow to be a million. Back to our space-mobile and zoom! Here we are in Hollywood and who do we meet on the street but Pat Krubeck! Why, we hardly recognized her The glare of the dia- monds is blinding--and who is her charming escort? You'd never guess--Eugene Briss! Pat'tells us that she and Eugene discovered that they were meant for each other --and the movies. Both are very successful stars. Isn't that simply divine? Sigh-- 'bye now, see you in the movies. While we're in the sunny state of California, let's jaunt down to Santa Anita to see the races. Oh! Look at that young man leading that beautiful black horse around. Why-- upon my word--it's none other than Buffa Ekrenl fthe man that isl. They tell us that he's made millions raising track horses and running them all over the country. Good luck in the future, Buffa, and may all your little colts grow up to be beauties! Back to our space-mobile and away. Let's see--how about going out East a while via North Dakota. We have to see how things are back home. Dear me! Look at that mo- dern, up-to-date school building they have in Kensal now! Oh--the primary grades are out for recess. Say - that teacher looks familiar! Sure enough, it's Janice Neva! We've been told that she has been named the most successful teacher in North Dakota. Congratulations, Janice and may your career continue to be as successful. There!s another new building on main street too. We've been told that Bob Goehring built it and is very prosperous in his taxidermy business. He tells us that he started his career in the back of the barn on the old home place, but that business was so abundant and his services so sought that he brought it into this fine new building. Good luck, Bob, and we hope that your stuffed animals travel to all parts of the world. We hate to leave these familiar faces and places but - back to the air. Gracious! We almost collided with that other space ship--but isn't it a beauty? You clon't say-- that belongs to Carol Spitzer, our old classmate? This is a surprise! l've heard that she teaches school in Illinois during the winter months. Well, she always did want to travel. Here's hoping She steers that ship around the leaning tower of Pisa! Her driving never was anything to brag about. Here we are in New York at last--where shall we go first? Oh, do you see that big white building over there? It is New York Hospital. How about getting a closer look? Here come three nurses. Let's ask them where Times Square is. Excuse us, but can you tell us--wait! lt's Karen, Clary, and Yvonne! Can you imagine that! We knew you went into nurses training together, but who'd think you'd still be together after fifteen years. You say you're all three superintendents at the Hospital now. Congratulations, but 'bye now. We have to move on. 16 I I if - ? ff+M -ffl J- T ji'-fr. Through the years of grade school, many students were gained and some were lost. Of these first six, only three were destined to graduate together. They are Gordy Lambrecht, Haakon Ekren, and Karen Burleson. When our high school days began in the fall of 1950, there were fifteen eager, but a little frightened freshmen. Those chosen as class officers were as follows: President, Yvonne F.5Vice-president, Buffag and Secretary-treasurer, Karn. We endured the torments and hardships to which we were subjected by our upper-classmen with fine spirit and found ourselves wiser, less timid, and more inclined to mischief at the end of this year. TWO of OUT ClaSSmaT2GS,Carole Schlosser and Billy Walker didn't return in our sopho- more year. Carole transferred to Jamestown High, and Billy moved to McHenry, thus reducing the number of members in our class tO thirteen. Those officers selected were as follows: President, Clarice,Vice-president, Patty, and Secretary-treasurer, Sandra. In our junior year we were able to retain our number of thirteen members. In the fall of 1952 we presented our junior class play, Ginger Snaps Back, and in referring to it we will modestly say that it was a smash hit! In the spring we spent many an hour preparing for the junior-senior banquet and prom, but this we enjoyed doing very much and we hope that the seniors felt royally treated to justify our intentions. As class officers we selected President, Patty K., Vice-president, Yvonne F., and Secretary- treasurer, Janice. The most eventful of our school days proved to be our senior year. Our number was reduced to twelve when Yvonne Nogosek left school in the fall of 1953. One of the first thrilling experiences was the receiving of our class rings only a few days after school began. Also in the fall we presented our class play, Saved by the Belle. In January of the new year excitement reigned among the seniors when they were notified by the photographers of the day when they would have their graduation pictures taken. We were very pleased with the results and quickly traded them with our fellow classmates after they were received. Those chosen as class officers were as follows: President, Eugene Vice-President, Janice, and Secretary-treasurer, Yvonne F. V All in all, our school days have been very pleasant, and we will surely miss our fellow classmates in the years to come. 17 .,' HN. ' l ..: .Y - I-4 I 1 I ' I IY l'l f.1 1 lmlljbl 1- . FRONT ROW: Left to Right - Krubeck, M. Schroeder, S. Spitzer, Kulla, Peterson, and Ca. Spitzer, With only Z losses in 16 games, the Kensal Spartonettes concluded a successful season In the season play, only Wimbledon was able to down the Spartonettes and that was only by one point. The second defeat came at the hands of Courtenay in the county tourna- ment. This defeat eliminated Kensal from further participation in tournaments. This defeat too, was by only one point. Led by the two returning regulars, Sandra Spitzer and Marlene Schroeder, from the last year's state tournament, the team tied for first place in 9l league and thus re- tired the traveling league trophy given to the team who retains it for three years. The loss to Courtenay gave us third place in the county tournament. We are going to lose Marlene, Sandra, Carol, Pat, and Clarice through graduation and they are going to be hard to replace. Prospects for next year are not too bad with the return of Sharon, Pat Peterson, Marlys, Shirley, Joanne, and Diana. Coaching these girls is an experience I will long remember. Their co-operation and spirit made them a pleasant group to Work with. C oach Quellman 31 'G qgfslusl fi , ., A - lj? '-' -51-f' .T -X ' J 'I-Q . 1 .,,, . After dropping their first 5 games, the Spartons came back strong to finish with 13 wins and 14 defeats. In conference play, we defeated Wimbledon and Rogers twice and Courtenay once to place third in the 91 league. At the county tournament, we won our second two games to Win the consolation championship. The boys played very good ball in the district tournament at McHenry to win third place. In the first game the Spartons defeated Glenfield, then lost to Mc?-Ienry, but came back with the best game of the season to defeat a strong Grace City team. The team was led by the scoring of Gordon Lambrecht and the fine rebounding of Bob Goehring. Freshman Kermit Tesch has proven himself an up and coming ball player. Eugene, John, Richard, and all the rest of the boys played good ball and showed fine spirit all year long. The loss of Bob, Gordon, and Eugene through graduation is going to leave three big pair of shoes to be filled. Eugene and Bob had their last season of basketball shortened by sickness during the district and county tournaments. The season was highlighted by the fine spirit shown by the boys. Without this spirit they could never have come back with the fine victories that marked the closing of the season. 33 4.- L- - -. 7.
