fight - the duck years duck daugherty came to Kennewick in 1967 and with him came spirit, daugherty and his belief in school spirit as the inspiration for better performance in everything, hut especially in sports, were unshakeable. with that spirit and a couple of years’ experience. Kennewick footballers swept the conference AAA gridiron in 1969 with a 7-2 record and really put the HITTING LIONS on the map for the first time since 1949. football wasn't the only world daugherty knew, though, physical conditioning was something daugherty believed in, whether for P.E. frosh and sophomores, track, everyday life, even for football, weight training and big bertha” became a way of life around Kennewick. if sports was the name of the game then sportsmanship was the rule, sportsmanship meant taking the lumps as well as the likin’s on the field, daugherty stressed the give and take of the game, using his own Irish nature and stuhborness to keep spirit up at all times. hut while daugherty played sports seriously, lie didn’t see it only as temporary victories of an evening or a season, many a young man found himself in college as a result of daugherty’s efforts to show the men of Kennewick to the world. for the rest of us we’ll just remember him as the big guy with the bigger smile and the things he made us do while he did us a favor.
