E3 SPCDRTS Being a gym Teacher has never been a glamorous job. Gym Teachers, for The mosT parT, are noT million- aires, IT is unlikely ThaT a T.V. miniseries will ever be made abouT gym Teachers. All ThaT is Too bad, because iT is The gym Teachers of This counTry ThaT made Americans whaT They are Today: BeTTer aT The shuTTle run Than The ciTizens of any oTher civilized naTion on EarTh. Perhaps iT is Time ThaT we, as a naTion, sTop Taking our gym Teachers for granTed, and recognize Them as our greaTesT naTionaI resource - a label They clearly de- serve. lvlosT promlnenTly, The gym Teacher is responsible for whaT is surely The mosT imporTanT seT of records in any school. In his files are all of our Times in The 50 yard dash and The mile, our disTances in The broad jump, and The number of siT-ups each of us can do in one minuTe. I shudder To Think of whaT mighT happen if The SovieTs ever goT Their hands on This maTerial. BuT wiTh our gym Teachers To geT pasT firsT, I know This possibiliTy is pracTi- cally non-exisTenT. AlmosT as significant is The gym Teacher's commiT- menT To making each of us an Adonis-like specimen of physical sTrengTh. This zeal usually TranslaTes inTo gym classes so gruelling ThaT we leave small puddles of sweaT all over The gym floor. BuT afTer T5 or 20 jumping jacks, I don'T mind being exhausTed. I know I am a beTTer person for having done Them, and I have only my gym Teacher To Thank. PresidenT Reagan has declared June 7 NaTional Gym Teacher AppreciaTion Day. Why noT Take This opporTuniTy To buy your gym Teacher a new pair of Keds?
